Earnest is one of a great generation! We can’t replace them and I know that the young generations have no idea how wonderful they are! In the last few years I’ve lost so many of these great men; brave men and women who went through so much and then still got on with their lives! Thank you for helping Earnest!!

Calgary here. I worked long term care for over 2 decades. LOVED it. I only left because the provincial governemt cut funding to such an extent we basically had to put them on an assembly line meaning we could no longer do any real one on one care 😥 Their stories as well as their sense of humour was always amazing.

My granddaughters’ great grandmother was 97 when she was hit by a city dump truck making an illegal turn. She was killed instantly. The driver didn’t know she hit anyone because of the weight of the vehicle she was driving and witnesses chased her for almost a block to get her to stop. What an inelegant way for a woman who had done so much and still lived independently to go. The worst part for the family was the comments people made on social media about how it must be a drug addict (pushing a cart with a gallon of milk in it?) or all kinds of horrible things. One of her granddaughters, my granddaughters’ aunt, was especially devastated and the comments made her leave all social media entirely. Who could blame her? It may have been kinder for Earnest if they hadn’t resuscitated him when his heart stopped. I doubt his family would have given up the last few days with him. I am 76, and I don’t think I would have wanted to be resuscitated in the same situation. A broken hip is extremely painful and realistically, in this case it was shattered into pieces, it would have been impossible to repair. He sounds like a wonderful man who I would have loved to known.

Kevin and his mother are lovely together but, given his mental age and condition, I hope she has had the foresight to familiarise him with local care facilities. Although he has a cardiomyopathy and (depending on the precise problem) may possibly die before she does, there is every chance that she will die first and Kevin is not capable of looking after himself. If he has never been allowed to spend time in a care facility, this would be a tremendous shock to him if there are no other relatives able to shelter him. I would encourage all parents with special needs children to do that ... familiarise your child with being in care because you never know what is going to happen in the future and you would not want to leave your child lost and bewildered in a completely unfamiliar situation. Even spending one afternoon a week in a care facility can assist a special needs person to make a less traumatic transition should that need ever arise.

The guy who seemed to be having spasms from his injury. When my oldest son, then just about to turn 19, broke his hip rollerblading. Broke the ball off the top of the femur. He was lying in the bed and he would suddenly spasm so hard. He would make a guttural noise and grab the bed rails and tense so hard. At one point he bent the rails trying not to scream. Couldn’t, wouldn’t, give him pain meds until the ex ray results came back. When they did, they took him straight in to surgery. Stopped out side the surgery doors and they tried to put the rail down and it wouldn’t go down, lol. He said “ Sorry man, if you give me a minute, I’ll bend it back.” Another spasm hit and instead of pulling in, he pushed out and bent the rails out enough so it would go down! Everybody laughed a bit and promised the pain would stop in a few minutes. He still says that was the worst part of the whole thing, those spasms. That is saying a lot considering he spent a full year recovering and had an incision from his hip bone almost to his knee.

I am not a particularly spiritual person. But I really hope that if there is something outside this world, it will haunt the dreams of the person who ran over Ernest until their dying day. Because their conscience apparently did not make them report themselves. And in a regular car, you WILL notice you ran someone over. There are only two scenarios that I can offer where a driver did not notice running someone over. Either they were drunk or on drugs and high as a kite, or they were driving a big lorry. Lorry drivers often do not even realize they have just had an accident unless they are stopped by outsiders. Hell, they can have tires burst and not notice it for miles.

I remember going to the emergency room once asked why you were here ? I told something you never heard of. She told me that she's heard everything then I told her that I was replacing a toilet for a friend and was in such a shock about the what the previous owners did to the floor and that the toilet didn't fall into the basement that I started to fix the floor with my sister running out to get the wood cut to the pieces that I needed that I forgot to put a rag in the flange. The nurse said that yes it was the first time that she had heard that. Then she asked me why I was laughing about it and not upset. I said that I knew better for my dad was a plumber so I only had myself to blame . And that's the truth. Then I heard one doctor or nurse asking why I was there and me thinking I hope that I didn't get them but the doctor that understood about sewage gasses. Then about a month later I found out that our hospital is a training hospital. They did get a lesson and so did I. But I did have a good laugh at it 😊

Poor Ernest, I feel so bad for him dying with such injuries done by a senseless coward. How can you run over an elderly man that walked so slow that you would’ve seen him a mile away crossing the street. This person deserves the harshest of nightmares for the rest of their lives. I feel at 93yrs old Ernest should’ve had a relative walk with him or they go get the pension for him. He survived the war and worked to help with his nieces from the time they were little to when they were older, all the time being a standup citizen. I find his way to death so upsetting, I can’t imagine how hie relatives are feeling. My heart goes out to them.🥰🥰🩷🩷
