Eldred Street - Maybe the Steepest Street in Los Angeles

MT Washington is a historic district in the San Rafael Hills Northeast of Los Angeles. It was founded in 1909. Eldred Street is located right below, almost in the Highland Park Area. It was created in 1912. Some people claim Eldred Street has the insane grade of 33.3 percent.
You will find 196 wooden steps at the end of the street, taking you up the hillside to Cross Avenue.

Fargo is the steepest street in LA, also the 2nd steepest in the nation. Located in echo park.

Thank you for the video. I was raised in Highland park, and wound run up that street and the stairs back in High school. I was in the track team and the cross country team while attending Franklin high school in the 90’s . The camera doesn’t do it justice , that hill is insane when you look at it in person. I just remember my lungs felt like they were on fire , I can’t believe I would run without stopping all the way up , boy things have changed for me now 😔

I have been to Eldred Street in Los Angeles and it is very steep. I have driven up this street in a car. It is very difficult to turn a car around at the top of Eldred Street. Streets like this one will not be built again, because around 1950 a law was made limiting streets in Los Angeles to a 15 percent grade. Likely that law was made for safety reasons.

I used to live in Highland Park in the late 80s and most of the 90s. That area used to be full of gangs and there was always shooting every other night. I grew up near that hill. Aldama school is near it and i lived near Ave 52 and Aldama. We used to race down the hills with our BMX bikes.

I lived there and after a couple of years my left leg was longer the the right so I had to move to the other side of the street.

I used to Uber drive in this area. I had to drive people up single lane hillside roads with no turnaround. Backing up all the way down is the worst. You see the lack of guard rails! Duane Street is a killer-steep one too.

According to Google Maps, Eldred Street is not only the steepest street in LA, but it's the steepest road in all California.

Actually the steepest streets are in Silverlake, next to the 2 freeway terminus. Many insist Baxter is steepest, tho my bet is Fargo, or Apex. Check these streets out, I’ve been to NYE events on Fargo and try walking that one after a few cocktails!

thank you for Posting this video. Enjoyed your Commentary.. Yes Steep as in 33% grade. Many bike riders GO up Eldred St. everyday. And there is A Strava Bike Competition Segment to how many Bike Riders ride up this road... portion of Eldred St. is so STEEP for bike riders , you can actually FALL backwards. there have been some HORRIFIC Vehicle crashes on this road..

Very steep. Like I said in the other video I've tried to drive up this street about 6 times. I always chicken out because it's a dead end so you have to go up it then carefully turn around at the top which terrifies me lol. The other super steep streets in Silver Lake like Duane, Fargo and Baxter are no problem because you can just go up one side and down the other.

That was cool lol I run around the ridiculously steep hills in echo park. Baxter St all the way up to Park Ave (overlooking Elysian park and DTLA) is a must see

Yes because in Echo Park, like in San Francisco, they laid a grid pattern on top of the terrain. Therefore the streets are quite steep up and down the hills.Silver Lake, which was built later, unlike Echo Park, the streets were laid out contoured around the hills. This meant the streets would not be as steep.

I lived there,and have nightmares,because of how steep, Beautiful 😅 ,came from the top ,,short cut from Mt Washington, I was 22, and came from Maryland, lived in a condemned house. This was a short cut to Figueroa

Allot of those homes originally built up there were cabins or hunting homes outside the city . Highland Park wasn’t always part of Los Angeles. And before automobile travel was prevalent.
