Rajdeep Sardesai says that giving free electricity and giving Rs 2000 to the Karnataka people is freebies. It is a ridiculous statement often repeated by North Indian media. If Karnataka gives 1Re as tax to Union Government, it gets back only 15 paise, while UP gets Rs2.73 and Bihar gets Rs 7.01 for each rupee they give as tax to Central exchequer. So, don't you think these states which use other states' tax money are freebie states?. For an analogy, the rich Germany funds many poor Eastern European countries. If Germany gives some subsidy to its own citizens, will those poor Eastern European countries, who survive on Germany's doles, accuse Germany of giving freebies to its own citizens? But, in India, rich states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka are often unscrupulously accused of giving freebies by national media, which may be due to the fact that these media guys hail from those poor states. So, better see the economic position of each state before making such allegations.

I think you need to revisit what GST is... the state Govt gets SGST directly. Its CGST that is split according to Finance Commission recommendation. So crying about Lesser tax is nothing but an excuse to hide their inefficiency. Giving freebies when there is surplus money without compromising on infrastructure projects is good but if you neglect infra development and give freebies the state becomes stagnant in growth.
