To understand how the electoral college works, we first need to go back to when the system was created.

Some confusion here on the three fifths thing--three fifths counting of black people no longer in force is it?? So each state's House representatives are based on that state's number of citizens--race no longer an issue?? So is the objection to the "winner take all" part ??? I'm confused as to the objection if anyone could clarify I really would like to understand.

I'm not sure I follow what the 3/5 rule and slavery has to do with the electoral college. Did it change something? Please explain.

They decided to make slaves counted as 3/5 of a person. This would boost their overall population, and give them more representatives, which in turn gave them more electoral college votes.

@@brysonmasonharley2609 The 3/5 compromise is in article 1 of the constitution which deals with the election of congress. Electing the president was the farthest thing from the framers mind at this point. During the constitutional convention, the southern states wanted to have their slave population counted so they would have more representation. The northern states told the southern states that since they treated their slaves as less than human and no better than cattle they could not count their slave population. So they came up with the 3/5 compromise which allowed the southern states to count 3/5 of their slave population (not person). If it weren't for the 3/5 compromise, the southern states would have walked out of the convention and possibly have formed their own country.

The voting for President of The United States should be done on the order of the method of voting in THE UNITED NATIONS. At the United Nations, each and every member nation gets ONE VOTE, regardless of their population. In the United States Of America, each and every State should get one vote, regardless of their population. It works for the United Nations and it would work just as well for The United States.

I'm concerned Abt how to protect farming/ranching interests against mega-city interests. Mega-city population far outways them so how does even current system protect them and how would one vote per protect them in your opinion--just asking--trying to understand.

I don't agree. Some states like California and Washington, are politially divided by region and population. For example, in Washington state, a few counties in western Washington have the highest populations and therefore determine policy for the entire state which pretty much screws over the people of eastern Washington. The same holds true for the differences between northern and southern California. As a result, the people from eastern Washington and northern California want to separate from their states. One vote per state will not work.
