Together with the lead dancer in the synchronised dancing they made a song in German (Kalle Koschinsky feat. Eskimo Callboy - Castrop X Spandau). Less than 3 minutes but great fun.

Their older stuff with their previous singer was good too, but Niko (the guy with the glasses) was like the missing piece to make this direction for them really take off. He's got such a nice voice, and it's perfect for this quasi-retro thing they got going on. If you want another really fun band to check out, try Nanowar of Steel. They're Italian, and they also make very funny videos. Even funny when you don't speak Italian. "Valhalleluja" is a great one to start with.

The clean singer is Nico Sallach. He reminds me a bit of a young Chester Bennington of Linkin Park. This band is much more than silly costumes, wigs, videos... they write some great songs! The aesthetics are a bit confusing to Non-Germans who don't know about German culture back in the 90s. The thing is, they aren't simply making fun of 80s fashion with the mullets and all that. What they are really making fun of is a phenomenon that happened in Germany and some other parts of central and north-western Europe (like the Netherlands) back then, after the 80s. A lot changed between the 80s and 90s. The coal mining and steel industries went belly up and tons of men who thought they had a future in certain heavy industries found themselves faced with unemployment or having to find other jobs. That basically created a whole generation of "peaked in high school" guys who felt very nostalgic for their youth in the early 80s, wouldn't let go and kept dressing like that well into the late 90s, long after everyone else had moved on. They were still running around in mullets and with handlebar mustaches and doing other tropes from the 80s long after it stopped being cool. We are talking about a million working class soccer hooligan types roughly one and a half decades after this style had vanished everywhere else in the developed world. Teens in the 90s used to make fun of those 30 to 40 year old guys who still hung around at rave parties and dance clubs, trying to pick up girls half their age while looking like caricatures of a bygone era. It was such a big thing that there also were tons of movies and TV series making fun of those low class, low education mullet dudes. That is what this song and the weird mix of 80s and 90s aesthetics makes fun of and that is why it makes sense that the dudes look like from the 80s while the chick looks like a raver girl from the 90s and why there are those techno and boy band elements in the song that seem anachronistic when mixed with the early 80s fashion. Eskimo (or now Electric) Callboy come from the former heartland of those dead heavy industries and that cultural phenomenon, where it was the worst.

Where do they get the creativity and ideas for something like that? Well, I just guess a lot, really a lot, of alcohol. 😁 But actually it doesn't matter. From music that manages to get us out of everyday life for a few minutes and artists who do not take themselves too seriously, there could be much more in my opinion. :) Well, I think after a video, which also stands out through its crazy visuals, I can just throw a recommendation in the room at this point, which I actually give 'subtly' with each of my comments. :) I'm talking about a group called 'BAND-MAID', which consists of 5 really talented ladies from Japan. If you like good rock music, I just recommend their first music video which is titled 'Thrill'.
