A number of people have pointed out that my comments referencing the ban on ICE vehicles would suggest they can’t be driven after 2040 in the UK. This is incorrect. The sale of purely ICE vehicles will be banned but ICE vehicles already on the road will be able to continue to drive. I hope that clears it up 😁👍

William, they very likely will be. Eventually. In any case, they'll become as rare, quaint and niche as steam engines are today. Fossil fuel will become as inconvenient to purchase at roadside outlets as coal is for us. The problem will virtually melt away. Have you noticed how many old style petrol garages have closed down already, because of the difficulty in making a profit from fossil fuels?Even the 'big boys' are having to supplement sales with ancillary products, in order to remain open for business.

Will they also be blocking the import of Used ICE cars? ... if so, start investing in exotic ICE cars, the future prices in the UK will be enormous!!!

Glad you obviously had an informative and constructive mtg with LV - great video and thanks for helping explain some of the little understood rationale in insurance. I worked in insurance for over a decade, and so you may well call me biased, but overall I feel the industry is often poorly understood by consumers and hence unfairly maligned

I'd say *fairly* maligned. It's obvious that insurance companies make it as hard as possible for consumers, and in many cases even agents, to be informed as to insurance plans and what they cost, and even harder to question or object to a settlement amount.

It was nice to hear it directly from the Insurance Industry and it further re-enforces my observation that probably 90%+ of the driving public is NOT capable of handling a vehicle which can accelerate to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds. Hence the high number of Tesla crashes within the 1st two weeks of ownership. The same holds true for Ferraris, Lambos, Bugattis, Dodge Hellcats, etc. Everybody ASSUMES that they are amongst the best drivers on the road but truth be known, most of them don't have a frickin' clue about the physics going on and thay get in WAY over their head.

I was with LV for the past 5 years for insuring my old ICE car. I had to drop them when I went electric because they were hundreds of pounds over the best quote I got from AXA insurance.

Had my Zoe with AXA; really good price and they stated they'd cover the rented battery in the event of a write-off - They couldn't compete on our Smart EQ though. Shame as they were an easy company to deal with (made a claim on house insurance which was quibble & pain free).

First off, this video prompted me to get up and have another mug of TEA and a few HobNobs right after breakfast. Also will review what my insurance is on the 2012 Leaf as I didn't pay any attention at time of purchase. I have been thinking of talking with local trusted mechanic and asking if he would like to get in on the ground floor for servicing electric vehicles. Also considering what it would cost to set up a few quick charge stations on his property. So many possibilities to look forward to. Thanks for sharing.

I've been driving a Long Range Dual Motor Tesla Model 3 since February 2019. I'm in Switzerland. I have insured 3 cars with exactly the same insurance cover with Zurich Insurance over the last 3 months. Jaguar F-Type Performance £1688 pa. Goff 7 GTI Performance £1319 pa Tesla Model 3 £949 pa Swiss car insurance is very comprehensive and usually more than the UK. (Prices converted at CHF1.30 = £1.) So insuring an EV that accelerates faster than the GTI and, if the Jag is not in the right gear, will beat that too, is cheaper!

Very nice vid. Lots of information. Many of the points mentioned apply very well into other EU countries as well. Lots of people hate the insurance companies but in my almost 25 yrs of driving and owning cars, I've noticed that they mostly apply very reasonable logic and maths when it comes to insurance pricing. And real life accidents, repair costs etc dictate the rates quite well. Many EV's have astronomically priced parts when it comes time to repair them after a collision. Tesla's components are in Ferrari territory as far as price...

I did call my insurance company to see how much it'd cost and it was a lot more (Im in the US) which sucks, and im still learning about them. I have a sister who lives about 2 hours from me (about 150 miles away) and i question if a used (2016 and lower) would be able to get me there without having to stop. I'd have to have to stop to refuel.

Lane assist can resist lane changes and when there are roadworks on a motorway you are often directed across solid white lines If you are not indicating at the time that will take you by surprise and assist you through the cones If you have adaptive cruise on the motorway (and are in the inside lane )If the car in front leaves the motorway, adaptive cruise can decide as they slow down to match their speed even though you are not leaving the motorway that can take you by surprise and anyone else around Pedestrian protection only operates if you are travelling at more than 6 mph and have your foot on the accelerator so in a supermarket car park it wont prevent you hitting someone stepping out in front of you or behind or parking close to a wall With automatic collision avoidance on, then occasionally, if you are coming into a corner on a country road where there is a high banking the car will decide to do some warning and braking which can come as a surprise If you are going downhill and leaving 30 Mph the national speed limit signs can be missed as they are above the detection height and the car will tell you you are still in a 30mph zone If the sun is low in the sky the car will turn the headlights on and you cant override that without stopping and switching off the power because it seems to think there are headlights approaching or something When they say the technology isn't perfect I think they might be understating the case sometimes it's just a bullet point headline in a sales brochure rather than a useful addition 2018 Leaf

When I purchased my MG ZS EV Mk 1 two years ago, I assumed electric cars were of lower power than petrol vehicles. I would certainly be worried about a young driver, just starting on the road, driving the MG because of its acceleration. My insurance premium jumped this year. Up about 40%. But it does provide a replacement vehicle for an unlimited time.

Great update. I'd noticed my insurance premium went up when I got my first EV (and even moreso after someone crashed into me) and understood that it was the higher cost issues that you mention. As you say, in theory at least that additional cost over ICE ought to reduce over time. Also interesting to hear about the Tesla crash statistic. Not surprising really and interesting to see that they've got the data to back it up!!! PS no chocolate with my cuppa as it barely lasted beyond Easter :-)

Not sure if that's due to the battery rental. You would have thought it would have been cheap, as the car price was cheaper. I find these studies interesting. I am still surprised today, people believe the EV myths.

EV's don't really have that much less parts when it comes to collisions. And let's face it; at the moment, most EV's have rediculously expensive parts. Tesla is a prime example. Simple halfshafts and suspension components, also body panels, are in Ferrari price range. Even a small bump can have a price tag of a small ICE car...
@finvka1
@finvka1 5 жыл бұрын
Also when you look at the amount of accidents that are caused by Tesla's driven way too fast and all driver aids disabled, one tends to understand insurance companies... We already saw the same trend on ICE cars. Here in Finland, BMW insurance prices are about 120-200 % higher than just about any equivalent car from other manufacturers. The reason is simple. You just see far too many BMW's driving at rediculous speeds and also wrapped around trees in bends. Very simple maths.

Just a thought...... The way Liability Insurance claims are dealt with these days means you have to of been negligent to be held liable. Therefore, if your vehicle is in full auto pilot mode and IT crashes and you were not responsible for that, I wonder how the motor insurer is going to hold you liable. Therefore the cost of the accident may have to been dealt with by the manufacture. Would have been an interesting question to find out.

When putting insurance on our Niro EV yesterday (ICBC, British Columbia), the agent couldn't tell us exactly how much it would be. She said, "Could be a little higher or lower each month. The car isn't in the system". Lloyds of London, did, however, have a price for 5-year replacement coverage. At the same time, Kia didn't have our VIN in their system. Seems it's all new - even to the automakers.

It would have been helpful to have discussed the relative personal safety of EVs. in crashes , since the one of the biggest features of insurance is the cost of personal injury claims. The cost of a written off car is at worse the trade price of a replacement, whilst the cost of personal injury caused can run to millions of pounds. I looked at the LV insurance outline, I didn't find anything to make me change. The inclusion of vehicle recovery was a feature with no value to me as it comes with the servicing of my LEAF. Maybe I should wait until Insurance Mk 11 is launched!

I didn’t know about the lack of repair facilities. But I’d already surmised about the more tech = higher repair costs. Insurance premiums aren’t just based on what sort of driver you are or the inbuilt safety features of a given vehicle. Not going through my thoughts now. But as I understand it, if the repair including labour, is more than 50% of the insurers valuation of the vehicle, then it’s a right- off. So if that shiny new thing parked outside gets bumped, even if you’re not driving. The likelihood of a right-off and you getting pennies where you paid pounds, is ever increasing, as greater levels of tech are counted in. Add to that, the probably reality that as soon as you drive your brand new vehicle off the forecourt, it’s resale value drops off a cliff by 20-30%. And that modern cars are increasingly being designed, to save their occupants in a crash. In part through transfer of energy & dissipation of forces. Manly via the vehicle disintergrating into ever smaller pieces. The increasing frequency of uninsured drivers. And it’s little surprise that auto insurance aren’t going to decrease anytime soon.

It's also weird how motor manufactures don't design dash cameras into the cars as standard. Instead you have to buy after market kit if you want piece of mind when you get hit in an accident. Also I can see the ICE car market collapsing a good few years before the ban hits. No one will want to buy an ICE car if they know they can't sell it on, that means they will have to drive it until it dies to get the full value out of it.

Exactly and I can't wait to see the back of them. My insurance keeps going up even though I have never had a claim and one traffic violation over 9 years ago, but our insurance still goes up and it is the same car, so I am paying more for aging tech with a car that has never had an accident. We're paying for bad drivers, young drivers and most importantly for SHAREHOLDERS who want their dividens every month. Hike in crashes amongst first two weeks of Tesla ownership. Like for funny statistics.

If Tesla owners are more likely to get into accidents in the first two weeks, then they should get a refund on their insurance if they don't get in an accident in the first two weeks.

As I understand it, ICE cars won’t be produced in the UK from 2040. There’s nothing to stop anyone buying a very cheap ICE in 2039. It’ll still run.

You talk about BEV's from a historical maintenance and operation perspective. Your whole discussion is backwards. BEV's will need very little maintenance, and when it is needed, Tesla comes to you. The likelihood of accidents is dramatically reduced, not just when Level 5 Automation is considered. The whole model of ownership is going to change. Companies like Tesla will self insure. The whole ICE Automobile Maintenance and Support Industry including Insurance is going to change.

the prices have skyrocketed overnight since this video. go see for yourself. EV is getting crazy expensive to insure. our i3 with LV just jumped from £330 2 months ago to £997 today. no provider was less than 470 when I checked last night with same details as before. scary

How could a car with 1/10 the number of parts and safer to drive because of the new features, be more expensive to produce, repair, and insure.

who is responsible for the accident claim when an autonomous vehicle is deemed to be in the wrong. i.e. you might own the asset, but you were not the cause of the accident.?

Is it not only the sale of new ice cars after 2040 that's ban. I could still buy a 2038 car and drive it after 2040. But I wouldn't cause I will hopefully have new leaf next year

Coffee? Those in the UK don't drink coffee, they drink tea! We in the USA throw tea into harbors (and blame the natives) and drink coffee instead. You're confusing me with your beverage selections!

Many of these "safety features" make people drive more dangerously. I often see people tailgating, but their car is telling them that they are far enough away from the car in front. If you need these "features" to drive you should go back to MarioKart

If ICE vehicles are to be "banned by 2040” what becomes of the London-Brighton run? And my BMW R100RS? Surely you should have said that "Sales of new ICE vehicles will be prohibited from 2040”? Statistically, I predict that I will be dead by 2040 - so, whatever your reply, it will only affect those that I have behind.

Right now ev'$ are not cheaper. How much for the fast charge adapter, how long before you have to replace battery packs? I asked how much for a decent range, 340 km range. Someone said $20000 just for batteries. 100 km range is not a decent range car. There isn't decent infrastructure to change your car. And how long does it take to charge your car? In usa non tesla cars cannot charge at tesla stations, what?$40000 for entry level electric car isn't cheap. It doesn't cut it yet. Same with zero motorcycles. Very, very expensive still. And the batteries, the most expensive part of the car doesn't last. They have to come up with better battery technology. The wager is not yet in favour of electric cars. I like the cheap Chinese electric cars. What I find troublesome is that these companies like tesla always are working on 'new' technology, but the chinese and do it yourself people take the basics and make it work for a third of the price. Long ago the electric GM car was crushed by the illuminati oil companies, but now the same oil companies are pushing for ev'$. I think that was simply a test run. For the illuminati controls the future as well. Don't believe me. Then view educate-yourself.com and view the illuminati card game as well and it's accurate predictions. There is something sinister or satanic going on in the world and you must ask yourself why is the illuminati pushing for self driving cars and 5g that destroys life. ( maybe to hack into your car that is spying on you, just like your samsung phone, total control) All these supposed benefits are playing into this 666 new world order mark of the beast setup that people are oblivious to. Also view the video of top Dutch banker who saw what is going on behind closed doors, (human child trafficking and sacrifice) .Dismiss the elephant in the room at own cost! When the illuminati induced mind controlled media is pushing for something, like the promotion of the tesla cult, beware. And the same people arrest people with wind turbines and solar panels who wants to live clean and free? And while the illuminati government is using tesla directed energy weapons, haarp, and weather modification weapons, and chemtrails,on its citizens? It is not our carbon footprint, it is their satanic 5g agenda that is destroying life. You remind me a bit of a child that is invited to Disney or a zoo being entertained but at the same time being ignorant of the abuse and media indoctrination that goes on behind the scene($).

I’m sorry but I thought this was about the insurance industry getting their heads around EV owners drivers - and how they can serve us better. You said you weren’t going to be sold at or an apologist for the industry, but all I heard was excuses and what they “weren’t” going to do not what they “were” going to do to make it better. Justifying higher premiums by using Tesla’s with ludicrous mode is frankly ludicrous in the extreme and insulting our intelligence! I’m sorry but this sounds like a ploy to get excuses out onto the public domain - which it did - hence your video.... sorry I really like your coverage and particularly liked your recent Kia Nero video - excellent review... but this just made me see red!!

Nick Ballard sorry to have made you see red 😬. As I said at the start of the video, we all love to hate insurance but we all need it! I wanted to hear from the people that make the decisions at the top level and impart that info on you. Excuses or not we now know how they think. I’m hoping to do a follow up interview so if there is anything you would like me to ask please let me know😁👍
