There is one BMW line up which differs slightly.. the 5 series.. I’m personally in the market for a M550i.. it’s near enough dammit as quick as the M5 (3.6sec to 60 vs. 3.2) but has a more split personality to suit every occasion. in case of car production the lion share of the cost is developing the vehicle platform as a whole. The actual cost for individual variants on that platform is a lot lower. That is why manufacturerss want to create them, the profit margin is higher and it helps with the branding.

Another reason to buy an ‘M’ version over a normal version of a car, besides the performance upgrades would be the more aggressive looks of the car. Having super wide fenders and wings and canards, etc.. makes the car more appealing, and yes the bragging rights are also a factor.

As always, great fun and entertaining to listen to your opinion exchanges. Concerning the SUV chapter, I’m not quite sure I agree with Sam when he points out that the Urus is more a Lamborghini than the Cayenne is a Porsche. The Urus is definitely more shouty than a Cayenne, but that’s about it. And reducing Porsche to an SUV manufacturer is a bit thick ! The 911, the Cayman and Boxster all share some form of that wonderful Flat-6, which neither the Cayenne nor Macan do. So whatever the numbers, Porsche is still and always a sports car manufacturer, and the true Porsche enthusiasts accept the SUVs (and Taycan) but dont consider them true Porsches. 😎

I think the main thing about these R and D costs discussed is that it’s not a whole new car. It’s a variant. Which is I think where Tony was going with it. Develop a chassis that can accommodate being various versions of a 3 series. Standardize as much as you can across the range. Only research extra or spend extra on unique braking systems, suspension systems and motors etc Then rake in the cash on the margins on an m3. Smaller ones on the 328 or 330 or whatever variant it is in the given decade.

When it comes to manufacturing of cars, during my mechanical engineering degree we focussed heavily on Toyota and lean manufacturing, and when a car maker like BMW makes millions of vehicles per year that are all spun off the same platforms the manufacturing costs go down significantly, it's lower volume sellers like Jag who are tiny by comparison, because you still need the same equipment and tooling, sometimes even more complex for high end stuff like Ferrari but for smaller volumes, stamping a bonnet for a million cars is much cheaper per unit than 10,000 bonnets

I’m not a manufacturing insider. But just think about it like this. There are 4 major cost centers R&D Tooling Materials Labor When you take a Veyron. It had unique tooling, R&D, higher than normal materials cost and lots of labor. And only a few cars to spread the costs over. Vs a M car or a GT car. They are using a lot of shared tooling, R&D costs. With only a minimal added labor & materials cost for a model that they charge 50-100% more for. The cost to produce an M3 is only a fractional amount more than a m340i because of these factors.

The UK market is tiny for Porsche so I'm sure they don't really care... but in this country there are several activities you would do with a petrol cayman you can't do with the electric one. For example, weekends away in scotland or wales with the other half, or thrashing it round all day at a trackday. These are most of the reason you'd buy a cayman, for those special occasions - now the car won't do it anymore. So what does it become? @@barbarusbloodshed6347 nope, as a publicly listed company they wouldn't be able to at such short notice. R&D takes 4+ years to develop a vehicle for most OEMs, so they won't be changing that now to suddenly develop a new ICE car when they've been developing an EV. I wish they could, but it just isn't possible.

‘we haven’t had too many electric sports cars’ That’s because electric cars don’t have sporty characteristics, they don’t make a noise, they aren’t involving, they sacrifice weight too much

I would love to see Lamborghini get back to making GT cars like they did in the 60's and early 70's, instead of building only Super cars, so they can attract a wider range of buyers who don't have $250,000+ for a Sportscars! They would probably sell more cars that way. Don't get me wrong, I'm a Huge Countach fan, but the Lamborghini cars of the mid 60's and early 70's were great cars.

Nooo. We had to leave our beloved Cayman GTS behind in our previous home because we couldn’t take it back to our home country. We were literally talking about replacing it later next year with a GT4. While an electric Cayman and Boxter might be great cars they won’t be able to replace the petrol versions. Look what the 4 cylinder did to its popularity.

I think they make the M3 for two types of person. Firstly, the person who needs one car to do everything. Secondly, the immature person who no matter what needs the bragging rights and to burn off other people from the traffic lights. On the other hand, the audience for the M340i is broader. Firstly, the person who simply can't afford the extra money for the M3. Secondly, the person who has a proper sports/super car for the early Sunday morning spirited drive, the bragging rights and the feel-good factor. Thirdly, for the mature person who doesn't need to brag or burn off other people from the traffic lights; for the person who knows that on public roads the M340i still has more than enough performance on tap. Fourthly, for the person who appreciates and wants a six-cylinder rather than a four. Fifthly, for the person who wants the bragging rights over regular cars, which are still very significant, and to burn off most other people from the traffic lights. Lastly, for people who simply prefer the looks and know the performance on tap is still more than enough.

There will be still a petrol version parallel to the Electric 718. Same to the new Macan. So people can choose what they want. - Sorry to say, but Porsche is not competing with Jaguar. Sales Numbers are a joke in the moment compared to Porsche. Even the electric cars don`t sell good anymore.

I used to be a sales person at Mercedes store. When people would come in and want a C63 I would push them to look at the C43. No normal person is going to be able to use the differences in the two cars and the 43 is plenty of car.
