Thanks the visualization helped me resolve my problem of the car once warm wanting to flood when shut off and restarting as the electric choke would not catch up quick enough to realizer engine warm already. I backed off the choke slightly to allow a slight gap (very little) to let my 68 Mustang J Code 302 engine with Eldelbrock electric choke not to flood after running .... also back to the first turn of key to start as compared to the hold to the floor and crank about five revolutions to start. Appreciate the video. The only tip which me an older guy with vision okay with glasses and good lighting to realize these were hex type screws on the electric choke. I looked at it twice and with a light for brightness noticed quickly which items to pull from my assortment of tips for the multi screwdriver set. Thanks again. Jeff

Just came in from adjusting on my Edelbrock, its suppose to drop down 20, 25 degrees tomorrow, I have had the truck for a couple of years and the choke has never worked, the carb and Edelbrock aluminum intake were brand new when I got the truck, the power was not connected or the ground, I got that done, wish I would have watched this video first, I'll get out there tomorrow and get it right now that I've seen this, Thanks.

greetings ... I just received my frame off restoration 1961 Impala. Ihave this carb on my 383 stroker/torker 2 intake. I noticed the idle at NOT was still a bit high so I removed the air cleaner and saw the throttle is not resting on the idle set screw. So the fast idle cam is not fully tripping for some reason. I've never had an electric choke, (my experience is a QJet with the mechanical auto choke; bimetallic spring sitting on the intake manifold) so my search took me to your vid (thanks btw) ... the adjustment seems pretty simple, so with a cold engine (43 OAT) ... I took a shot. After loosening the 3 screws as you showed, my drum still won't rotate. ughh. Will reattack later, but wanted to thank ya for your video.

Some of the ones with aluminum housing can get stuck. Some also have teeth. But most of them will move.

Howdy, I’m still having problems with my 77 nova, I changed the idle screw and adjusted the electric choke; however, my car cuts off when I hit the throttle. I’m new to carburetors as well. It’s a Rochester monojet

It needs more fuel coming out of the acceleration pump. There might be an adjustment on the rod. Some have several holes you can pick from. Look in a book and see what hole dumps the most fuel. Or it might need the pump replaced. Or it could be the power valve in the bottom of the float bole.

The horse lady lol! I have a crazy neighbor too! Anyway I'm trying to figure out why my jet stage 1 quadrajet choke won't open to 90° it's starts good cold as I did adjust the choke thermostat, but once fully warmed the choke blade only opens to approximately 45° unless I push the fast idle cam down with my finger. It never drops to fully open on its own. It's just been rebuilt by Jet and I had very few adjustments to make other than idle speeds and air/fuel screws. Once warmed up the truck runs awesome, no bogs, no stumbles, no notorious quadrajet problems. Just this choke cam! Something isn't right. Have you ever dealt with this? Thanks

If the engine backfired through the carb' when trying to start, the butterfly choke flap probably got jambed tight shut from the pressure going the wrong way through the carb. You will need to take a small hammer to tap the butterfly near the edge where it is hung up. It can be quite stuck. Then fix whatever caused the backfire. If that didn't happen then good luck with finding why it is stuck.

When you are physically adjusting the choke by turning it, do you have the fast idle screw set to where it is touching the forward lobe of the fast idle cam? Or do you have the fast idle cam "dropped away" from and not touching the fast idle screw? Thank you very much for your video by the way!

It’s cold. So it will be touching the fast idle cam. You set them just as if you were getting in it and not under the hood. Hit the gas once to set the choke and high idle.

Hi Forest, thanks for sharing this! I´ve an old Holley 1946 Model - Single Barrel Water Cooled Choke system carburetor, and I´ve just repaired the choke water hoses. Still having issues to calibrate this system, ´cause the vehicle starts much better that before (when this feature was disables), BUT has some problems during the first minutes ´till it reaches the ideal working temperature. After that, it goes fine. The engine (and the entire car) vibrates strongly and It´s almost impossible to use. The first butterfly choke position is closed, at this point it just vibrates and goes very very bad, smoke trough the exhaust, despite the fact the own carburetor vacuum opens a little the butterfly. The second position let 1 cm open that butterfly and the throttle position is not so high. At first glance, it worked OK but for it should be due to the engine was warm. This morning, 22 degrees or so, this happens and no idea what to do. I should say that I repaired the choke system to avoid more hard starts - specially under 15 degrees. I really appreciate if you could help me with this! Thanks in advance!

Why is my electric choke tamper proof? The housing has a lug attached to one of the screws that the thermostat locks into with a corresponding notch. This prevents me from turning the choke at all, it’s always locked in the full closed position.

LPG is totally different the gas. The gas has a tendency to fall out of suspension when the engine is cold. LPG does not. So there is no choke on LPG. You only have the open horn. If the choke is closed the LPG will still get to the engine as it will flow around the choke and butterfly.

+AnDre G You need to adjust the metering rods. Get the proper kit and swap out rods and springs. The cam will also play a big factor. If you have a big cam then manifold vacuum will be low so you will want to use the lightest springs to keep the carb from going rich to soon.

It could be several things causing the problem. From proper fuel pressure to incorrect jetting. Or if the engine is not warm enough and needs choke. There are lots of factors involved and you must look at each one.

Got a 650 edelbrock on my 350 chevy engine, cannot get choke to shut off at all, has power going to it, worked fine a month ago, have tried adjusting it, moved it all the way counterclockwise and its a little better. I can shut it off manually by holding plate open and hitting throttle. but as soon as I hit the throttle again it revs up real high and wont shut off. any ideas?? thanks. It might be the ground is not working or the bi metal coil is bad. It must have power only when the ignition is on. There is also an adjustment for the high idle on the side. You will see it hits a step cam.

My Edelbrock 1406 The choke gets jammed shut with the little fast idle screw under the linkage if i hit the throttle linkage when the engine is cold I have to manual by hand push down the linkage so it moves free It is closed all the way The setting is one notch to the left from the middle mark on the choke housing . If i go in trying to start it and hit the throttle to give gas it gets jammed shut with that screw and floods the engine What do i do back off the little screw under the fast idle linkage all the way or readjust the choke housing marks

There is a "high idle" screw. It's used to adjust the high idle speed. When you say it's jammed does that mean it is stuck all the time or only when cold? The adjustment in this video shows you how to adjust the time the choke remains closed.

If you are on facebook you can put up pictures so I can help you better. When it's cold and you hit the gas pedal it should allow the choke to close. Then the high idle screw is holding the throttle plate open until it warms up a touch. Then the next time you tap the gas pedal it should allow the choke to open and the idle should drop to the normal RPM. By adjusting the choke thematic coil like the video shows you adjust how long it stays on high idle and how long the choke is closed. Some times they are Allen. Sometimes torx. Some times they are rivets. Ya never knew tell you look at it

I normally adjust it when it’s cold. But, it all comes down to where you live and the climate. A cold climate you’re going to want it to be a little stiffer for longer. If it’s not closed long enough when cold. The fuel will fall out of suspension and it will stall.

Hi. Very good info! I have a motorcraft 2150 I just rebuilt on my 302 in my 88 ford ranger, and the choke isn't hooked up. Missing hot air tube and nothing on the wire tab on the black cap but mine has 1 terminal and yours has 2? What should that terminal connect to??? I'd like to get my choke working properly if possible!!!

If you only have 1 terminal then it will go to a 12vdc + that comes on with the key. If you have 2 terminals then you would have a + and - that would need to be hooked up.

As long as it's high in rpms it will run ok but when driving easy it shifts quick and when it shifts into 3rd if i dont be real easy on the throttle it stumbles and dies. Should I put smaller main jets to lean it out?

I have a Roch. Quad and can't find the happy medium on my choke (just rebuilt it) when it's cold it won't start because it stays closed; have to pop the hood to hold it open to start. when it gets hot and stays open it won't shut off and chugs until i manually push the vent closed. what do you suggest? i know i know get rid of the rochester! well if a money i would.

You shouldn't need to get a different carb. Rochesters are actually the way to go if you do slot of off road bouncing around and shit. Something isn't seating right in your choke housing or maybe there's a little too much play in the linkage and it binds up somewhere

+Robert Wartanian Secondary will open when ever it's necessary. Some are vacuum some are manual linkage. But they will open weather the choke is open or closed. When the engine is cold the choke will be pulled open no matter how cold the engine is via linkage to the primary butterfly.

The choke is a separate system from the secondary. The choke should pull open when you hit the gas. If not there is something causing it to stick or it's set to rich.

Drill out the rivets. use a cable tie to hold it in place while doing your tests. Then replace with new pop rivets. Some may have the adjustment on the flapper it's self.

It needs to be set heavy or rich so it can warm up longer before opening up all the way. Otherwise the fuel will drop out of suspension and the engine will stall.

Question: I have an electronic choke on my '82 Trans Am E4ME carburetor. Being winter, it's about 33*F when I first start the engine in the morning. It idles fine no problem, even when in gear. So I start off, but at about the second stoplight (3-4 mins driving), the engine stalls when I come to a stop. When the engine is fully warmed up, it idles perfectly at stop. I'm trying to figure out why it idles fine in gear at stop when first started, but about 3-4 minutes out it can no longer idle while stopped (either in gear or in park). Is this a problem with the choke not staying on long enough? I'm just not sure if there are other issues here.

It needs a heavy choke in the winter and cold weather. It could also use more of a squirt from the accelerator pump. There should be a way to adjust it by moving the linkage on the accel pump arm. It should have 2 holes in it. the one closer to the carb should be the one for max squirt. I think.

You may need to readjust it for summer if it loads up. My VW was that way. So I marked the choke with a scratch. Then in 2 places a matching scratch on the carb. One summer one winter. 1.5 minutes under the hood and it was ready no matter the season. Best of luck to you.

It will only open if closed. It the engine was hot when turned off you will need to hit the throttle to allow it to close. No spacer on this unit.

I just checked the mixture needles and as I turn them in the rpms increase and as I turn them out the rpms decrease. I also noticed the needles aren't that pointy they are almost flat at the end.

Thanks brother, that's what I thought too...Actually when I went to look at it the car backfired previously because of a dying battery and the gas being pumped into it trying to get it to start. When it did backfire it actually blew the choke flap up past the housing and rested on the housing lip. The flap had to be unscrewed and placed properly, back inside in the housing and screwed on the rod again.. that's a brand new Demon street carb too..weird.. Works like a top again now. I wanted to thank you because you had the best explanation on the net and really showed how it sets, sits and works for all chokes and your quick response....the guy was freaking..I made him change the plugs and oil because of how much gas was pumped into it while he was trying to get it going... strange but true!

99% of the chokes have power any time the key is on. But not when it's in the Accessory position. This way when you drinking beer and listening to the radio it will cool off and close. oldducatim900 Hi again! Thanks for your response.. I tried the electric choke wire but the jeep cranked but woudn't start.. :( I guess, I was tapped into an accessory wire... "0 I then put the 12v wire to the + side on the ignition coil and the cj7 started right up... Thanks for your help. :)

i have one major problem!when i start my car and let it idle for about 15minutes and then try to start with pedal mid way...just for a quick take off....the chock stucks closed!the engine stops and it wont start again until i remove the air cleaner and release the choke with my finger!!what is the problem???

And i have few problms. its rpm is not stable from some days ago. its goes from 1 - 2.5rpm while i am driving or not. which is very high. some time its 1.5 or 2 . what would be the reason what shall i do? kindly response pls

They do not want you making changes to the choke. It must be a factory carb. You might be able to drill the out and tap the hole and put in screws.

you adjust your electric therma(whatever) choke by feel? how it feels really has nothing to do with how fast it opens, they go hand in hand but that's like buying cereal based on color not on taste, well that's what the horse lady told me anyways, ha ha

If you turn it one direction it will take longer for the choke to open. If you are in a cold area you need a heavy choke. This will cause it to take longer to heat up and open. If you don't believe me then go crank yours to rich and see how long it takes to open if it even does.

Sorry but she was arrested and sent to a state mental hospital. She went around pounding on everyone’s door at 4am saying the goat rustlers were trying to take her goats. Pretty sure she has dementia. She told me she didn’t have kids. But soon after she was arrested a guy helped pack up her house. Then moved all the horses. It was her son.
