Electric fan conversion for my E36 M3 - Keeping a tracked M3 from overheating

Күн бұрын

After the mechanical fan shredded during an autocross in fall 2020, I decided to take on converting the E36 M3 over to an electric fan. The project snowballed into a radiator replacement, ducting, and additional bodywork.
The electric fan conversion kit I used:

All the other misc mounts, hoses, and brackets came from Bimmerworld, highly recommend them.
The coolant reservoir relocation bracket came from Turtle Laboratories (a little big for my tank but high quality):

This is the Mishimoto radiator I eventually bought (spoilers, and this is the only affiliate link in here):

That box with the hose is the Secondary Air Pump, its for emissions. You can delete it without any issue, except that there are two holes on your exhaust manifold that need to be blocked off. They sell cheap block off plates, and many aftermarket headers are designed to block them. When I ditched mine I installed the Euro coolant reservoir there.

I'm pretty sure my Turner headers already have that blocked off but I'll double check. Thank you for the info! I couldn't find anything useful with a couple Google searches.

I replaced 3 fans because when I did donuts or when I hit the gas hard I saw that the engine was mowing sideways. I did replace (2) engine mounts and that solve the problems. There were bad and when the engine shakes the fan hits the fan guard and the fan wings got broken

6:22 secondary air pump it helps warm up the cats so they last longer you don't really need it if your planning on tracking your e36

That box is an air box that cools the cats or something like that. It only comes on when you do a cold crank and it runs for like 1 min then shuts off. You would hear it when you first crank your car for the day. It would hum for a min then stop. Anyway, that’s what it is.

After going to a Koyorad 48mm radiator and Stewart water pump (20% more flow), I found the condenser fan is all that is necessary to cool my E36 328i in any situation, whether street driving in traffic or a 90F day at the track. If you still had your AC you could literally just throw that mechanical fan and shroud in the trash and call it a day without all this work.

If I kept the aux fan, wouldn't that be essentially the same setup that I have now with the electric fan, just as a push instead of a pull setup? I do have a stewart pump already.

@@NeverEndingProjectGarage Basically yes except the Aux fan is free and uses the oem sensor (can be swapped out for a colder one), and your setup has more air flow because your fan is more powerful, all in all I would've done like you did.

Had the same problem. Now I'm just running it constantly. I live in a tropical country so it's fine. Replaced my whole cooling system including a racing water pump. BMW cooling system is so bad.

Yes you want the nose up when bleeding, but since you've got the turtle labs tank mount, literally just lift the tank up. Air go where tank go, ez pz. nice vid tho

I wasn't happy with how loose my tank was in the Turtle Labs mount, so I strapped it down to the mount and couldn't use that method.

I say go with single layer flywheel, dual mass flywheel not required on 6 cylinder engine and it will rev faster!

Any reason you went with the probe sensor instead of the NPT fitting for the temp sensor for the fan controller? Also I installed that turtle labs bracket and did not like it... First, the bottom hose from the E tank rubs on the radiator (I sleeved it with another hose) and second, I could never really get the E tank filled to the Cold line.

Never mind, I see you deleted the AC fan and went with the NPT sensor on your new radiator...

Mechanical fans just zaps too much power! Fan clutches work but always locked during hot weather! :(

Your front electric fan not running; front fan shroud blocks flow to radiator, really pissed me off; will not run cool this way; I say go with rear mounted electric fan or fans, NO front shroud, can turn off for highway speed only! Good luck! :(
