ELECTRIC FIRE ENGINE! Portland Fire & Rescue Engine 1 Responding (Pierce Enforcer Volterra) [4K]

A 2023 Pierce Enforcer Volterra electric pumper was recently put into service in downtown Portland, Oregon at Portland Fire & Rescue station one. Pierce has placed of three Volterra zero-emissions pumpers into three communities.
Madison Fire Department in Wisconsin;
Portland Fire & Rescue in Oregon; and
Gilbert Fire and Rescue Department in Arizona.
All locations represent different climates, allowing Pierce to collect performance data for the vehicle in various environmental conditions.
Pierce has a partnership with all three communities continue to develop and evaluate the Volterra apparatus to gain exposure and insight into the operational environments that the EV must withstand. The patented parallel-electric drive train can also be coupled to the internal combustion engine to provide continuous and uninterrupted power to the pumping system or drive system when needed for sustained long term pumping operations.

@@downix No they aren't, not now. But 3 years ago you could get a truck for under a million. Now a factory standard model is 1 million to 1.5. But ultimately, these hybrid rigs will cost more due to increased maintenance costs from specialists, the battery disposal at end-of-life and any unforseen issues atop that. Plus if the battery is damaged or ruptures, well we know that outcome.

@Stargazzer811 You are making some baseless assumptions there. The RTX trucks use lithium nickel cobalt aluminum oxide batteries, specificallt Volvo Penta Batteries. If damaged or ruptured, we do know that outcome, which is nothing beyond a broken circuit. This is not the same chemistry as found in Tesla or Chevy Bolts, which use Lithium nickel manganese cobalt batteries (same chemistry used on the Samsung phones which caught fire some years back).

I think Redmond, WA. is getting one soon! I really like the traditional look that Pierce went with, the REV Group (E- One, KME,etc.) is also building a traditional engine vs. Rosenbauer’s futuristic engine like LAFD has! The ride height adjustment and all wheel drive are nice features of the Rosenbauer though!

If you look closely when the engine turns right onto the side street and then again at 2:47 it’s still has an exhaust pipe, because the truck still has a 9 L Cummins diesel motor on it. Sweet looking truck!

I don't see the exhaust pipe. It's a Volterra and that means it's an EV. It's much quieter than the diesel-powered rigs.

@@davidkaiser1004 It's a hybrid, not an EV. It has a diesel engine still, that way if they run low on juice in the battery they can swap over and still have a full tank of diesel. Rosenbroken is the same way, don't let them trick you.

I'll give it to Pierce, at least this looks like an engine should. But at the end of the day It Is A Hybrid, not an EV. And this is not the future of anything. Automakers have admitted that EV's are not sustainable to produce; we don't have enough raw material in the world to replace all ICE driven vehicles, not even 50% of them. This is in the end an overly expensive gimmick, and it probably won't take off except in a few departments who are willing to blow all their money on these and nothing on improving training, better gear or better safety systems which could all mitigate carcinogens better than this can.

Yes the physical arrangement might be the same but the details, internals, styling, all different. And bear in mind there are different pump and compartment setups too, like rear mount pumps and pull out hosebeds.

Actually the battery-powered system is coupled with a Cummins diesel engine that provides continuous and uninterrupted power to the pumping system or drive system as needed. It’s the exact same spec as Portlands other engines except it has a Cummins instead of a Detroit Diesel.
