Having been a professional firefighter in NSW for 41 years and completely conversant with almost every circumstance where a fire engine (pumper) is or may need to be employed at an emergency incident I consider the notion of even a partially "electric" appliance farcical in the extreme. I see this exercise as virtue signalling at the expense of practical operational needs. So happy I'm retired and and no longer have to "toe a departmental line" in this era on of mindless stupidity.

My cousin has been a firefighter for the last 30 years and has recently retired. He tells me the biggest problem by far is the proliferation of fairer sex in firefighting and DEI. In his opinion they completely destroyed the profession and took all the joy out of it. Now they have HR in the fire department, women on permanent disability because they were hurt the first month on the job, men have to watch every single word they say/avoid being alone with members of the opposite sex, discrimination towards perfect candidates that are the wrong race/gender, etc. His son who is an absolute specimen of a young man tried to get in the department several times and was rejected every time for not meeting certain requirements. He now works for me in my construction business because he can't even get into the department even though several of his family members are/were in it and his dad was the fire chief of his division. EV firetrucks are the last of their concerns.

EV battery engineers are trying very hard to cram as many electrons as they can into the very small volume of a single battery cell praying physics will just look the other way. They should try compressing the orbital diameter of valence electrons to squeeze in more atoms of Lithium but that would probably need the gravitational power of a black hole 🤣 Maybe 9 kWH (the energy contained in a liter of gasoline) could eventually be stored inside a single EV battery cell in the year.....4024!🤣 And that's a big maybe.

@@runeaanderaa6840 Simply not true. They are made using huge amounts of fossil fuels. The electricity to charge the batteries almost always comes from fossil fuels. As a volunteer Firefighter, the day that I am required to travel in an EV fire fighting appliance is the day I quit. As EV passenger cars weigh about 2 tonnes, an EV Fire truck will likely weigh 12 tonnes, 50% more than a diesel powered one. Can you imagine the ensuing explosion and fire from such a battery? To say nothing of the volume of hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen fluoride gas released,

It should be obvious to anyone that an electric fire truck is a non-starter. What happens if it gets called out before the batteries are recharged? What happens if the battery-driven water pump stops in the middle of a fire because the batteries are flat? Of course you have to have a diesel-driven pump to ensure it keeps running. Do the morons in charge of these matters even put their brains into gear? PS: Isn't the fire they are sent to put out likely to be producing 100s times more pollution than what comes out of the truck's exhaust?

A 1991 fire engine needing replacement. Only 34 years old. The Dallas Texas fire department replaced several trucks/engines that were closer to 50 years old. Sounds like pure virtual signaling. Someone found out about some 'grant' money, another way to say taxpayer's money to be wasted, and decided to be the 1st in the state with a shiny new toy. I doubt the battery will last 30 years. However, I'm certain the manufacturer has a replacement battery for $60,000 plus labor, $30,000. The battery life will be garbage because it will sit in a state of fully charged sometimes for days if there are no calls. Oh, wait. It can only be charged to 80%. Well, it still will degrade from not being fully discharged and recharged. But remember we're saving the planet from a non existing problem.

Reminds me of the electric desert rally cars that have a built-in gas generator to recharge their batteries... Even the pole-to-pole EV challenge couldn't do it alone: "To recharge their Ariya, the pair would either use a prototype solar hybrid charging solution or a 5kW wind turbine, depending on the weather. If that failed, they occasionally had to rely on their gasoline generator, a necessary piece of equipment when traveling through the Arctic. " Other reports stated they only used the "portable wind and solar charging trailer that will generate and store renewable energy to power our Expedition Nissan Ariya in the harsh Polar Regions." Guess you can't reliably use EVs everywhere...

On March 9, 1970 my town a had a 9-alarm warehouse fire that burned for 18-hrs and one fire engine (pumper) was kept there for one week. After after 5-hours, the gasoline fire engines needed to be refuel and that was a logistical nightmare. One local company had a diesel engine in its pumper that didn't need fuel until 12-hours later. From that point on, every fire company in the county bought diesel engine fire trucks when their vehicles got replaced. Why would any fire department buy a truck that needs to switch to a diesel engine with a small fuel tank that would need to be refueled faster?

As an American who has lived in urban areas and now lives in the suburbs, I can tell you that very little of the diesel engine is required to move a firetruck to the scene of the fire. Perhaps 5 or 10 minutes running time. The firetruck will then be on scene using the diesel engine to run the water pumps and emergency lighting for more than an hour if not several hours before a few minutes run back to the firehouse. With this in mind, exactly how much could an electric motor possibly reduce diesel emissions? Remember, fire trucks also use plenty of public safety lights and sirens on their way to the fire. Then there is the issue of brush or forest fires where fire apparatus will be required to drive a distance to the fire, travel on unimproved roads to get to where they are needed. There are also large water tanker trucks that accompany them and they can expect to be on scene for days on end where fuel trucks will keep them supplied with diesel. Do these fire apparatus really benefit from the additional weight of an electric motor and battery or would they be better served by carrying more equipment, water or diesel fuel? Do fire trucks need the additional complexity and introduction of possible points of failure considering they operate in all weather conditions from desert heat to arctic cold?

Yes, I didn't think they'd be able to use an electric pump. Twenty years ago, I was in the Rural Fire Service (volunteer bushfire brigade). Our two trucks each had a straight-six diesel for pumping. Typically, we'd run it up to 2,500 RPM for delivering water; but I saw an occasion in Woy Woy where a crew was trying desperately to save (cool with mist) a house whose timber fence was ablaze (during a summer of fires on the Central Coast)-they maxed the power setting and had their pump screaming at 3,000 RPM. At the very moment those firefighters saved all the houses in that street; just a mile away, the fire consumed the fire station and all the firefighters' cars.

Yeah you way off there electric pumps are a ton better than diesel ones hence why they are the preferred option for most water transfer, the issue isn't the pump it's the batteries it just isn't possible currently to carry around the energy needed vs diesel. So even through an electric pump needs less than a quarter of the energy a diesel one does to do the same work the diesel have 20x more energy and it's easy to carry more and get more

Firetrucks have a plethora of accessories - radios, sat phone, burnover protection system, pumps, fridge, regular lights, emergency lights, telescopic light tower, remote water cannon, sirens... The idea of making these appliances all battery EV is utterly stupid, as the batteries would be lucky to last 30 minutes in full use at a fire.

ICE fire trucks can last fifty years or more, but not the battery. Average mileage of firetruck is short, it spends most of the time waiting. It should deliver maximum weight of water, not additional heavy fuel stock. Firetruck is the last place to use batteries.

The diesel engine is not a backup. Pumping water to a high head pressure is extremely power hungry and no matter how big the battery was it would not do the job even for a few seconds. The pressure and volume required to reach say the 30th floor of a tower block is mind blowing.

“Town Council approved spending $775,000 to buy the Volterra fire engine and $270,000 for an electric vehicle charger.” Do they include the $270,000 for the charger when claiming “reduced maintenance costs”? How about the cost of the enormous amount of electricity to charge the buggers? And what if the battery goes wonky with the “in-station charger” and burns down the fire station?

Around my area, during the dog days of summer, firetrucks can frequently make 2-3 runs per day (grass fires, etc.). Not every day, mind, but it does happen. And that's during daylight hours, which leaves maybe 4 hours for recharging between runs. Or perhaps there're only minutes to recharge if a grassfire is naughty and doesn't wait its proper turn to flare up.

during my career as a municipal firefighter, I attended plenty of incidents that started at dinner time and we were relieved at the scene the next morning by the oncoming group. Apparatus, especially the base pumper, often required on-scene refueling. The idea of an electric apparatus to me is ridiculous. A move by the municipality to this type of apparatus would change the risk vs benefit analysis performed by the company officer. In my humble opinion, the use of electric apparatus would necessitate defensive, exterior attack tactics only. Nobody wants to be inside a burning structure and lose water.

Beyond the idiocy of converting things that can't work as EVs (large trucks), imagine the amount of resources it takes to produce fire engines. Even if they worked, I imagine these trucks are designed to last 20-30 years, and they are replacing fully serviceable trucks. Each truck has to be the equivalent of 30 cars in terms of resources needed to produce them. No matter how clean these trucks are in theory, producing them unnecessarily is pollution by definition.
