I firmly believe if he were in any other band he'd likely be a household name guitar player. But when you're sharing the stage with a shortlist GOAT percussionist who also is the lyricist, and a frontman with one of rocks most distinct voices, who's sometimes playing 2 parts (bass and keys) while singing, it's easy to see why he might be a tad overshadowed.

Ie Michael Anthony’s background vocals for VH, George Harrison, of the Beatles, ironically for his lead guitar playing, John Entwistle of the Who, who took care of his instruments and continued playing bass while the others are destroying their equipment, and multi-instrumentalists John Paul Jones and Garth Hudson of Led Zeppelin and the Band respectively ( I know the Band a different genre but I think they’re a good example for my point). @@duanetelesha that's absolutely true, but if you say "your favorite drummer's favorite percussionist" not only does it not flow as nicely, as a saying, but a lot of the less intelligent (anyone who doesn't like Rush) rock fans might just give you a blank stare or ask you what a percussionist is...or probably both. Then you would be forced to dumb it down for them and repeat the saying the right way, anyway. Save yourself some time, and being part of the genius class, but the non-arrogant nice people part that we are among that class, as Rush fans, not wanting to embarrass those less fortunate, just say "Your favorite drummer's favorite drummer." Then you can tell them what Neil really is, or not, once intelligence levels are established.

The drum pattern in the beginning of the song is the morse code signal for the letters YYZ (Z pronounced Zed), which are the call letters for their hometown airport, Toronto. Neil heard the morse code signal, came up with the beat and Geddy and Alex worked around that. It is a song about the happiness of returning home after a tour. A true example of conveying a feeling, even without lyrics. Leave it to Rush. You truly need to see what I consider to be their all-time greatest performance ... "Xanadu" from Exit Stage Left. I called it three geniuses with seven necks. Watch it to find out why. You will never see three people play more instruments in one song, it just cannot be matched.

Definitely in the top 3 live performances ever made (especially in terms of accuracy and fidelity to the original). The other 2 would be Eagles Hotel California 1977 and Porcupine Tree’s Tilburg performance of Anesthetize. All just stunning feats of musical performance.

Alex Lifeson is (was?) a licensed pilot. The story I heard is that when all three members were flying home together one time, they heard the Toronto International Airport’s call sign in Morse code, YYZ, over the transponder. One of them (very possibly Neil) thought there was a song in that rhythm…and here we are.

Neil's nickname of "The Professor" is largely attributed to his mastery of drumming, but that is not the case. The guys in Rush are so comical with each other, when Neil cut his long hair, Geddy and Alex joked and said he looked like The Professor from the tv show, Gilligan's Island.

My first Rush concert was on their "Farewell to Kings" tour, back in 1977, and over the years, I saw them perform live between 20 and 25 times (I've lost count!) Two things that every concert I attended had in common: These were life-long friends (Neil joined the band after their first album was released, so he was known as "the new guy," even after 40 years playing together,) and while they were deadly serious about the quality of their music, they were having fun on-stage, playing together, and they invited the audience into that "fun!" Secondly, they put every ounce of energy into their performance, and the audience felt that. Leaving every Rush concert, I had a huge smile on my face and felt exhausted! Every concert was an incredible experience, and we are so lucky that in a career that lasted 40 years together, we have quite a few live performances, from their first live album, "All the World's a Stage," through their video performance of their final "R-40" tour.

First 😂I grew up in a town outside Toronto and they lived in the next town and we were playing in the park and heard music coming from the factories and we climbed on the dumpsters to watch in the window and saw them rocking out making the most impressive sounds we had ever heard. They saw us and came out and talked to us about hockey (cause that's what we Canadians do 😂) and we talked about the music they were recording and their cars they had beautiful cars. Geddy and Alex gave us guitar picks and Neil gave us drumsticks they were so down to earth and humble and when I was older I saw them live twice in Toronto. The second time in front of 500,000 crazy Canadians. Epic show. Try Battlescar a collaborative piece between Max Webster and Rush 2 amazing Canadian bands. The coolest thing about this is the crowd. This was the first time Rush ever played South America. This crowd had been waiting 30 years to see them. Rush was playing at all cylinders. It was a perfect storm. Love your reactions!

🏆 This RIO concert was part of RUSHs' 2002 tour which occurred after a 5-year hiatus because of some profound tragedies in drummer Neil Pearts' life. There was some doubt as to whether or not the band would ever play again, but they came back, strong as ever, and continued making great music together until 2015! "Mission", from the tour, A Show of Hands, is a nice change of pace! ☮️

Rush has several different "modes" which characterize their songwriting/catalog. They have the early/Hard Rock stuff, which is reminiscent of Led Zeppelin -- songs like "Working Man", "Bastille Day", "Anthem", and "Finding My Way". They have their heavy Progressive Rock from the late 70's -- songs like "Xanadu", "2112", "Hemispheres", "The Trees", and others. Then they have their early 80's "Arena Rock" stuff, like the music from Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures (songs like Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Spirit of Radio, & Free Will). Then they continued to develop in the 1980's with songwriting and instrumentation that was much more in line with the New Wave and Ska sounds of the day -- songs like "Subdivisions", "New World Man", "Early Distant Warning", "Big Money", "Middletown Dreams", "Force 10", "Time Stands Still", and "Kid Gloves". Then, in the 90's, they streamlined their sound to de-emphasize the keyboards and re-emphasize the guitar-driven, 3-piece Progressive-influenced Rock that they built their career on. You should check out "Dreamline", "Bravado", "Show Don't Tell", "Ghost of a Chance", "Animate", "Cold Fire", "Driven", "Resist", and "Half the World". Then Neil Peart's life was flipped upside down, in 1997, when his daughter died in a car accident. About a year later, his wife died of cancer. As you can imagine, he separated from the band because he didn't know what to do in the midst and under the weight of so much grief. He travelled on his motorcycle, over 50,000 miles, just to keep moving, just to try to focus on something other than the black void that his life had become. He survived that terrible time and was able to come back from the tragedy in the early 2000's. Rush got back together and released a few more albums and live albums, before they retired in 2015. All their albums are amazing, in their own way! Stacey, you are on a real journey with this band. Neil's lyrics are quite profound. Geddy's vocals are epic and heartfelt. Alex's guitar work is like catching lightning in a bottle! They make magic happen, as three dedicated but fun-loving musical brothers. That is what kept them together for over 40 years -- their friendship and the brotherhood that came out of it. The best musicians and best people in Rock!

It's a fresh, aggressive, hard-hitting, tour de force of a performance; and the audience is "all in." Captured here is a magic moment in rock music history that will never be repeated.

GREAT reaction Stacey!! Only a South American crowd could 'sing' along with an instrumental!! THAT's a football crowd for ya! I saw this tour (and frankly every tour since '97), and let me tell you, this song NEVER gets old! But to see how wild the South American Rio crowd go for this was amazing! Being a Canadian just outside of Toronto - I always get that good feeling when I see 'YYZ' on my luggage tags, because it means I'm going home! (which was the inspiration for Rush to write this to begin with) - YYZ is the airport code for Toronto's Pearson International. Please continue this journey! Subdivisions, Xanadu, Limelight, The Spirit Of Radio, La Villa Strangiato (another incredible instrumental), and especially 2112 (a 20+ minute EPIC!) - are all musts going forward! 'YYZ' is the 3-letter airport code for the city of Toronto, Canada...Neil Peart 'The Professor' (R.I.P.) played the opening w/ 'Y-Y-Z' in morse code. The instrumental on their 1981 album 'Moving pictures' (which had 'Tom Sawyer' on it) came together while Rush were recording in the studio... Guitarist Alex Lifeson took a break from the sessions to fly his remote-controlled toy airplane outside... Meanwhile, Geddy Lee and Neil Peart started jamming on a new idea... and by the time Lifeson returned to the studio, they had already composed 'YYZ'. With 'Moving pictures' selling 4x platinum in the US, Rush fans loved 'YYZ' in concert; it actually became more popular than another Rush instrumental - 'La Villa Strangiato' from their 1978 album 'Hemispheres'... Rush was a huge influence on Kirk Hammett of Metallica... Sebastian Bach of Skid Row... bands like Primus... Mr. Big... Dream Theater ... Tool ... etc. The 'Rush in Rio' CD/ DVD was recorded in Brazil in 2002... it was Rush's first tour in S. America and 3 of the biggest shows of their entire career on their 'Vapor trails' tour... Rush admitted that they had no idea if they were even popular in S. America and their records had sold modestly there officially... However, bootleg copies of Rush albums sold were much more widespread and when the band arrived in Brazil for 3 shows at Porto Alegre... Sao Paulo ... and Rio... Rush was greeted like The Beatles! The 3 shows sold more tickets than any Rush show ever (Rush played The Gorge Amphitheater in Washington state to about 25K fans in 1997)... the Porto Alegre show sold 30K tickets... the Sao Paulo show sold 60K... and the final night in Rio was 40K 😲 Neil Peart's drum kit was a 360 degree kit... he would alternate on it during his concert drum solo - a highlight of every Rush show. 'YYZ' was a highlight in Rio because the fans started singing to the instrumental... It was a triumph for Rush, especially after the ordeal that drummer Neil Peart went through losing his daughter and wife within a year in 1997/ '98 and then spending 2 years traveling on his motorbike to heal from the tragedy of losing his family... He finally settled down in California in 2000... remarried... and then, gradually started working on new music w/ Rush again in 2001... Their 2002 tour was their first since 1997. Other Rush songs to check out - 'The spirit of radio'... 'Closer to the heart' ... 'Subdivisions' ... 'Limelight'... 'Fly by night' ... 'Time stand still' ... 'Dreamline'... Glad to see you are loving Rush, and so impressed with them, as most of us are when we first discovered these three GOATS in one band. Becoming a fan of Rush is also a clear sign to other Rush fans of your high intelligence, no further proof needed. Though your use of the words "daunting" and "intriguing" regarding Neil's drum set and their music were other big clues. Lucky for you, there are another 175+ original songs in their 19 album discography and 8 60's cover songs they did celebrating artists they grew up listening to, released on their cover album 'Feedback.' It's a rabbit hole as wonderful, unexpected and ground breaking as it is deep. Though the band originally formed in 1968, the final three man cast was established in 1974, the same year as the release of their self-titled debut album. Though two of the three, Alex and Geddy were in the band since '68 (The year I was born). 1974 is the year they count themselves as the true beginning of Rush, as Neil's addition changed everything for the band and the three became life long best friends too-no brothers. Though the first album was recorded with a different drummer, Neil learned all the songs in two weeks, in time for their first US tour. Rush's last tour in 2014-2015* was their 40th anniversary tour titled 'R40.' And all three stayed together for a career spanning 40+ years (R40 tour lasted to 2015) over 5 decades. When they finally made it into the Rock and Roll hall of fame in 2013, their two biggest fans besides me, Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins of the Foo-Fighters introduced them. You must see the video of this here on KZbin. If you don't mind songs on the longer side, I would like to recommend 'The Camera Eye' from Rush's Moving Pictures album, the same album that Tom Sawyer and YYZ (pronounced YY-ZED; they're Canadian). Or if you are too chicken to react to a long song (in which case you may find yourself in trouble when it comes to RUSH songs), a deep cut, this early into your Rush discovery, then let me suggest two others from the same album that are "radio friendly" length so became popular; Limelight and Red Barchetta.

This is such a fun performance! The crowd really makes it extra special. All three members are virtuosos on their instruments: Geddy Lee is considered one of the best bassists in rock music and Neil is considered one of the best percussionists. Alex is often underrated in the mainstream music press, but he is one of my favorite guitarists; he has so many beautiful solos. Also, fun fact: Geddy and Alex have been best friends since the age of 13 (Neil joined the band in 1974, just after the release of their first album. Neil also writes the lyrics). For a future reaction, I suggest the live version of 'Xanadu' from Exit Stage Left. Also, at some point, 'Between the Wheels' live from the R30 tour in Germany. P.S. I love your David Gilmour T-shirt; I saw him on his solo tour in 2016 and am a huge fan of his guitar playing, as well!

The guy is a legend, but because of Neil and Geddy Lee he’s always put on the back burner. It’s such a shame. The guy is just as talented and just as fast and rush would not be rush without Alex Lifeson’s absolutely incredible guitar playing. Alex is a friend of mine and some of the things folks don't realize is they play, sleep, board a plane, play, sleepboard a plane etc…. I was chatting with him one day and he said something that blew my mind. He was asking about the area I lived and what it was like and I mentioned on you know as you played here many times. What he told me just slayed me and really made me think, he told me that he and Geddie actually know hardly anything about the Cities or areas of the world because of the schedule mentioned above😳😳🥹🥹. Think about that folks, touring the globe and not being able to enjoy what this world has to offer. If you know about them you know that as the Professor got brain tumor and almost quit he was actually just riding his motorcycle as long and far as he could absorbing what he had missed while touring. This life seems awesome but it literally isn't what most think. RIP Neil Peart aka Professor

Rush is one of my favorite bands. Was lucky that my Dad was too. We saw 11 of their shows together when I was young in the 2010s before the retired. Glad to see people are still discovering their amazing music and performances. R.i.P the Professor, one of the greatest lyricists and drummers to exist. Also on Geddy always has cool, weird things on stage. On this tour and R30 he had washing machines that had T-shirts in them that would get thrown out to the crowd. On Snakes and Arrows he had Chicken Roasters and they'd use the chicken for crew catering. The last two tours he had some really cool steam punk scenery. I'd also highly recommend checking out Rammstein live. They are by far the best live band on the planet. Their performances and musical tightness on stage is second to none. Another band I'd love to see you react to is King Gizzard and The Lizzard Wizzard. They write pretty much anything. Seriously they've written everything from a synth record, to metal, to psycadelic rock. They're a great live band too. Edit: I've seen you've reacted to Rammstein, but I'd love to see you react to more of their live content from throughout the years. Especially their 2019-2024 stadium tour.

Back in 2004, we didn't have cell phones like you know them. We had flip phones that didn't have video recording capabilities. The internet they had was slow and limited content. Phones back then we primarily for making phones calls. If this concert in Rio happened today, I'm sure they would have a sea of phones out as you see anywhere.

You have entered the Rush zone! The band, Geddy Lee (Bassist, keyboards and vocals), Alex LIfeson (guitars) and Neil Peart (a.k.a. The Professor R.I.P.) make some of the most iconic music out there. There are great bands out there and Rush is up at the top of the list. I agree with an earlier comment about listening to Xanadu from the Exit...Stage Left concert but don't cut out the start of that piece and that would be The Trees, which is the song just before Xanadu. They blend together and are an amazing trip into life and space.

Yes, Stacey, if you continue to follow the RUSH rabbit hole, you will find out how talented and deversive these 3 men are/were. Neil (RIP) was the greatest drummer of all time. It was once drummers use a metronome to keep the beat, but metronomes use Neil Peart. As @michaelbriefs9764 stated just before me. "Xanadu" from the 1981 live show is a great one. This tour was the last tour that Neil had his entire acoustic percussion and drum set. In 1982, to save space on tours a drum pad made by Roland, could replicate many of his percussion instruments like the wood blocks, glockenspiel, tubular bells, etc. Matter of fact, the beginning of this song you hear the glockenspiel sound. I've been a fan of RUSH since I was 17, and I was 59 when I found out that the glockenspiel part at the beginning is morse code for YYZ. If you just want to see Neil at his best. His drum solo "Live In Frankfort" is a must.

It didn't happen often, but Neil did occasionally drop a stick after throws. But Neil also threw sticks higher than anyone else I ever saw. He had a stick wrangler for that purpose, and he would never miss a beat.

being a Canadian Rush is a national treasure!!! They played my high school in 74 for an assembly from that point on I was hooked Have seen them 9 times in big arenas and in small venues. All 3 of these guys are considered the best at their instruments. Alex probably the most underrated guitarist ever, Geddy is bass, organ both hand and foot (Alex too for foot) and a crazy vocalist. Neil was considered in the same breath as John Bonham and Keith Moon. Goats all of them.

Peart is one of the all time greats. His drum kits were legendary, and he could make them sing like no one else. I feel like Geddy doesn’t always get the recognition he deserves too but he’s got such a unique style on bass.

This tour was their first time playing in Brazil. They did 3 shows, Porto Alegre, Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro which this is from. 125 thousand people saw them over those 3 shows. I saw them at Madison Square Garden about a month before this show.
