When post-shoegaze magician - the peerless electronic wunderkind - Ulrich Schnauss invited us to his apartment in London, he specified it would have to be at night due to his predilection for ‘nocturnal’ activities.
We thought that seemed mostly normal for a musician until he came to the door (clad in leather jeans) and dragged us up to his pitch-black attic.
Thankfully all of our Warhol-period Udo Kier fantasy/nightmares were unwarranted the moment we walked into his studio: an impressive collection of synthesizers and effects units used to layer hundreds of manipulated sounds and craft some of the most breathtaking, bombastic records released in recent years.
Ulrich was kind enough to show us some of his favorite instruments and demo the tasty tones from his forthcoming album.

That's what I always also say: when there's no music in the soul of the player there won't come music out of the instruments. No matter which instrument the person uses. It will always sound like dead stones. Most of the today's musicians think the secret is in a technic or style, but the secret is in the being.

This guy's music is like a painting that, when you put your headphones on, be surrounded and pulled into.

Good interview; Ulrich makes a really good point at about 7:50 about how electronic music is no longer "fresh" or able to impress simply through novelty.

Years and years ago bought his first CD. And kinda got lost in the collection and totally forgot about it. When I was looking for something I found the Far away trains passing by Album by accident. God... so glad I found this little gem back !

Would be curious to hear about why he moved to the UK. Germany seems a lot more with his values these days.

Look at the interviewer like a kid in a candy store wiggling on that Oberheim 8 voice, unbelievable machine, and that Ulrich has one!

As he joined Tangerine Dream in late 2014, presumably he was a member when this interview was done. I knew his records before he joined TD. Strangely, I'm not aware of him doing records after he left, in 2020. His production touch in evident in the TD Quantum Gate album. But I find that sound he favours a bit too overbearing and it can mask the absence of the development of a tune. The TD "Particles" EP was another he featured on. It has some remarkable qualities. It didn't get the Schnauss mix treatment and was better for it. The remake of Rubycon was far better than any of the other remakes TD did and maybe even improved on the original. And the new track Shadow & Sun was in a TD style that, I think, is the only tune that is attributed as a co-write of Schnauss & Froese only.

But you don't really need to spend hundreds of thousands of euro to make this music. Anyone can make it with software. It's just a lot more fun using the hardware.
