The thing about Jeff Lynne, is a surprise. Every track has one, play them and find out. The master of the pop song.

ELO is a classic, period. They were an entity to themselves as far as their genre. Ask most 50+ adults to name a song of theirs and they will be stumped. However play any of their multiple hit songs and that same person will sing along word for word. Kudos for testing the waters with them! Look forward to every post you two post!

Why is everyone leaving out the ELO lip-synching controversy that ended them? Odd.

@@Greg-io1ip - "Ended" them? They used backing vocal tracks when live to capture the studio sound. Lynne ended the band, not the lip synching.

Not the only symphonic prog band by a long shot. Genesis, Yes, King Crimson, ELP, Kansas, Alan Parsons Project, Moody Blues, Procol Harum, RENAISSANCE!!, etc all used classical and symphonic influences to shape their music. Many of those bands used the MELLOTRON to recreate that orchestral sound. ELO was good,but hardly unique. And what's this with 50+ adults not being able to name their songs?? Lmfao . I was buying ELO albums at the age of 14-15 in the mid 70s. We Boomers grew up with them. Are you freaking kidding me? 🤪🤪🤪🤪

Jeff Lynne had to be Mozart in a prior lifetime. Pure genius and still doing it today at over 70 years old. When you react to Mr Blue Sky, make sure it's the album version so that you can hear every melodic change at the end. Almost makes me tear up every time. Anything from the Zoom album is epic, but all of Lynne's work is nothing short of fantastic.

Jeff Lynne and Richard Tandy (not to mention the SUPERB Bev Bevan on the drum kit!). E.L.O. were a mid-late '70s radio staple! [Sort-of an expansion of his (short-lived) previous band: The Move...] Jeff Lynne has never shied away from being known as a HUGE Beatles fan/follower (as attested to by his future membership in/work with with (the "retro-superband") The Traveling Wilburys, for instance -"future" from the point in time that THIS song was recorded (and E.L.O. existed!)-), but it is apparent from, not only, musical cues, across E.L.O.'s discography, but (for instance) in things such as a lyrical allusion in THIS song:: (the line) "There's a hole in my head where the rain comes in." is a lyrical reference to The Beatles' "Fixing A Hole" [opening lines: "I'm fixing a hole where the rain gets in and stops my mind from wandering..."] ...which, at THIS point in popular music, something like🤔🤔 75-100% of listeners would have, at least, been familiar with (if not recognized the 'reference use' "first listen."🤷). ...so: "there's that." 😛😜
@SonicProfessor_a.k.a._T._Andra11 ай бұрын
Personally, I, always, had more of a preference for EARLIER Electric Light Orchestra material and the "harder-edged" side of their sound [THIS song was a great place to start, I.M.O.!]. I will recommend: "Don't Bring Me Down" (kind of a "you want disco?? ...this is "rock 'n' roil disco!" 😛😜"call-out"/"response" record; at thee time...🤷) l "So Fine" [unfairly ignored, nowadays! 🤘🤘] "Do Ya" [A rocker!] and "Turn To Stone" [good "meld" of: Lynne's Beatles obsession, with "rockier" tendencies and "orchestra"-toe arrangements and ideas!]

ELO are one of those great, underrated bands of the 70s/80s. John Lennon once famously said in an interview that he liked them a lot and that their sound was similar to what the Beatles would have become had they stayed together. Another good one fellas! 🤜

@@Greg-io1ip Somehow not buying that. Arguments and lawsuits over songwriting credits is what did it. Groucutt and Bevan felt slighted by Lynne and that's what ended the Orchestra. Lynne and Tandy are the only original pieces left performing.

ELO--primarily Jeff Lynn--is known for combining rock and classical, and has a deep catalog of albums, hits, and great records. Jeff is known for his writing and producing, and has worked with other famous artists. I suggest starting ELO's their early, rawer, and athletic early incarnation, with Roll Over Beethoven--their breakout hit--which combines Beethoven's Ninth and Chuck Berry. I would love to hear La's reaction to its hyper, rolling drumbeat in the instrumental breaks. And Lynn sings like a man possesed. All the best.

Listen to that fucking production and arrangement. For some reason, all of a sudden, those keys remind me of Daft Punk (Hey, you guys need to listen to them). Yes, those strings come in and out always adding to the dynamic, interest build and diversity, then a little dissonance or oddity is tossed in, a wrench in the works, but quickly pulled out of back to the groove. This is the profound and subtle song writing mastery of Jeff Lynne. Pure genius.
