The band's frontman Jeff Lynne regarded his own songwriting at this point to have reached a new high. "The songs started to flow and most of them came quickly to me. To have all those hits, it was just ...I mean amazing really. Going from doing okay for probably three or four years to suddenly being in the big time, it was a strange but great thing." - Jeff Lynne

Yep - give it up for Jeff! Not just ELO, but also as part of the Traveling Wilburys!

Telephone Line was released in 1976 while Lionel's Hello came out in 1983 (7 years later). Just to clear up which came first. 😉

Having been a fan of Jeff Lynne since his days with The Move and then when he took over the band ELO from Roy Wood whose band The Move was now defunct and he'd formed a new band Wizard so Jeff continued with Bev Bevan and created the ensemble that would change the sound of the 70s in UK and the World. Seen them several times and still to this day are amazing. So glad you're enjoying them

You probably have heard this song before , it was top 10 in the US and UK and gets played a lot.... Lionel Ritchie's Hello was released 7 years after this

Thank you for doing this recommendation, it's always appreciated. E.L.O. or The Electric Light Orchestra as they were known back then, this was a big song when it came out 47 years ago, that makes me feel so old. 😕😢😄

Hey, Fam! This was the first "hit" I knew by ELO. probably 1974-75? (check it out: telephones actually had to ring..no caller ID... almost no "message services"...) I have seen live versions much more recent featuring Jeff Lynne - he just stays awesome... thanks for your reaction! (p.s. I still have the vinyl!)

For your next ELO song, I think you should react to their 1977 classic, *"Standin' In The Rain",* you two will love it! :D Studio version, from their double album, Out of The Blue. *"Standin' In The Rain",* is the first song of a 4-song suite, known as Concerto For A Rainy Day, that comprises one full side of the double album. The 4th and final song of that suite is your favorite ELO track, *"Mr. Blue Sky".* Only Jeff Lynne could write a 4-song suite about the weather and make it into a masterpiece! :D

I was shocked when you said you only know "Mr Blue Sky" from Guardians of the Galaxy !! As a Guy born in Birmingham, England, ELO was my favorite band and local band growing up. Jeff Lynne, Bev Bevan and Roy Wood, Harmonies and instrumental arrangements are the best!!

Here in Brisbane, on radio TripleM, they are running a competition where you vote for the GOAT (greatest of all time) year. I think 1976/7 (two years, yes, they only wanted one) are it for me. This period saw the release of Boz Scagg's Silk Degrees album, Queen's Night At The Opera, Rumours by Fleetwood Mac, Alice Cooper had Goes To Hell in '76 and Lace and Whiskey in '77 (Lace and Whiskey had How You Gonna See Me Now and You and Me, both 100% worth listening to!!) as well as a lot of good local music. And this one, A New World Record by ELO. Tightrope, Rockaria and this track are the standouts in my mind, but to be honest, the whole album is gold!

Great reactions. If you haven’t heard any thing from ELO’s “Secret Messages” album, check out “Stranger” and “Bluebird”. It’s an earlier album, one of my favorites that I feel is very under rated.

Fabulous lyrics , so well knitted together with the atmospheric music . Not gonna lie , this has been known to wet my eyes from time to time 😳.. Jeff is such a keen observer of life and emotion and has that undefinable gift of being able to express that in a killer line …. Sigh.. it’s just a wonderful song . The pesky mobile has rendered the subtext of the lyrics obsolete ….🤷‍♂️ 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Well said, sir, but it wasn't the mobile phone that rendered the subtext of the lyrics obsolete, it was the answering machine, long before the mobile arrived.

People often think ELO copied the Beatles. But it’s mostly when the Beatles used orchestration occasionally. ELO used it in nearly every song. When singers use falsetto, people claim they are copying the Beegees. The other thing is that music of every era uses similar concepts and topics, that’s just natural.

The Maida Vale bbc studio concert is worth watching. Or ex bbc as they have sold it off for profit and the new owners are applying for change of usage. As if the bbc doesn’t have enough money already! Anyway it’s a great concert to watch.

Jeff Lynne will have forever spoiled his reputation over those he excluded from the induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The Hall calls for the band to nominate those it wants inducted. Fleetwood Mac excluded Bob Welch, who was a band member for several crucial years as the group transformed from Blues artists to more pop/radio-friendly. And in the case of ELO Lynne included long time keyboardist Richard Tandy, Roy Wood (co-founder, but only a member for one album), and fellow co-founder Bev Bevan. BUT he excluded the three-man string section -so much part of the ELO sound, and also bass guitarist Kelly Groucutt… a member of the band for eight years! String-section member Michael Kaminski was their violinist for six years. It’s strange how these things work. Pink Floyd included Bob Klose who is not on any of their original albums and who left the band in 1965.
