How to check the hydraulic oil level and sharpen the cutting wedge. The edge on my unit when brand new was rather rounded. Since mine is only a 4 ton unit it needs all the help, thus a sharpened wedge helps sometimes. The manuals say to use a file. Here I use a grinder first then a file since mine was rather blunted with cutting Live Oak pieces last year.
Harbor Freight first sold the 4 ton units 40318 circa 1999 and 93815 circa 2006 . Also sold were a 7 ton 97113 circa 2007 The current model is 5 ton 61373 circa 2013. Since all these are made in China the same type units are the Homelite UT49103 at Home Depot etc. Dr Power 5 ton electric is similar too.

I've split 5 cords through it so far. Does what I need it to. kzbin.infoUgkxUyQswtttSffRMblGbrhCvZn7JkhtG1-7 I scrounge all my firewood and am not equipped to handle big wood, but for logs up to 24 inch diameter or so, it works great. I've been amazed by some of the gnarly bur oak and elm crotches it has split. For the tougher stuff within it's size range, you might have to study the piece a bit to decide the best attack, but if you split smart it's up to the job. It did arrive low on oil, and I was would have nicked it half a star for that, but it has regained my full confidence. UPDATE NOVEMBER 2021: Still going strong after all these years. I love the one-handed operation. Hope it's still in production if I ever need to replace it

I have DR 6 ton and it has that same green button that you have to press and hold to use the splitter. Who was the genius that designed that garbage! Thanks for the video!

Thanks a lot. Bought my log-splitter in France, new, with no instructions. Used it quite a lot, then with some shorter logs it would not split them. Sprayed some lubricant on the 'runner' & it was better. I had asked about l'huile but was told it was electric like I was stupid!!! Have now topped it up & it's fine. So thanks...

Keep an old (big) candle on hand and rub the cutter wedge often and it will help a lot.

Harbor freight makes the 5 ton unit. Wen makes the 6.5 ton unit, and Bilt Hard has a 6.5 ton unit for all the same price and all have fairly good reviews. I's still deciding which one I'll buy? I pretty much ruled out Harbor Freights splitter because it's just rated at 5 ton, and the other two are both 6.5 ton units. For about $35 more the Wen will include a stand, but it looks kinda flimsy and not rated all that well, so I will probably make my own stand for which ever splitter I buy.

Got the sun Joe. Picked it up used good condition.on marketplace for $100 was out of oil so I put atf I had in it. I’m glad I only paid $100. Its build quality is Chinese. It does work on completely dry wood. Anything that is wet forget it. Knotty forget it. Not really disappointed cus I’m only into it for $100 I figure I can sell it for $150. I can do better with my maul just get tiring swinging. Still healthy enuff to hand split 1/3 to half a cord in an hour or so. Thinking ima sell this little guy. Maybe it can help some old timer that really needs it.

Just got a 5ton Harbor Freight electric splitter, pretty similar to yours. I love it!!!! Works great for my needs. In your video you mention the vent plug. You explained to loosen it a bit for operation and then screw fully shut when done. My directions were far from specific it just said to remove the vent plug during operation and replace when done. Things were fine until hydraulic oil came out of the vent plug hole. So do you just unscrew it a bit to release pressure during operation??? Sounds silly but my owners manual said to remove it before operating. Thanks great video

Yes, just undo a couple of turns, lets the pressure out but wont allow dirt in that way.

I have one close to this one same color. Model number is ls4t-370. But electrical box is breaking and switch is falling apart. Plus it's leaking alittle when not in use. Any idea where to find parts it works great. Thanks

Interesting. Couple of things. Files work on the push stroke. No need for back and forth. Achieves nothing. Why not leave motor running? Saves two handed operation. That must be a wimpy splitter. My Yardworks 5 ton splits up to 10" maple and 12" ash with little problem. has done for years.

Any idea why the push arm doesn't retract? It went down just fine but won't go back and can't be pushed back either.

Had the same problem, just check the oil level, and bleed. Working fine, don’t over fill oil.

Has anyone had a problem with this type splitter ( mine is actually the Princess Auto Power Fist YP5225) where the piston is not retracting very well. It's doesn't come back all the way on it's own, and I have to hammer it back with a log.

@@daveanderson2468 Mine did it a few times. Once the lever got stuck and second time there was a piece of wood wedged in and prevented it from returning to it's position.

The vent is to relieve the air pressure generated by heat expansion of the air in the reservoir, and could possibly be the reason for the cylinder not retracting.....Mine is a 4 ton from Princess Auto, and eats anything I put in front of it.....I also keep a few spacer pieces of knotty wood handy, to avoid the need for such long strokes when splitting shorter wood....I am impatient.....

You need to shut it if moving or storing the machine but partly open it when the machine is set level and being used. You will sometimes hear a hiss as air comes out.
