Thanx Blunosr. Appreciate the reply. Im building a lathe and am searching around for a motor. Hawaii is not a place where motors appear magically. Well maybe its because I'm new at this. It was just awesome watching your labor come to life! Thanx again.

Excellent! Exactly what I was looking for. My Baldor single phase 3hp motor suddenly quit on me. Your comment of, "it's almost always bearings" was very encouraging. I hope to find that to be the issue. I replaced both the Run and Start capacitors to no effect, so I'm really hoping it's not the windings. Again, excellent presentation! Thank you

You stated that you don't like Chinese bearings but prefer American or Japanese bearings. My Dad grew up during the great depression and didn't like anything that wasn't American made. I guess Canadian was OK too. I remember when he was replacing the front brakes on his 1992 Ford F150. He pulled the front wheel bearings to grease them. He found that they were Japanese bearings. He wasn't going to put those Japanese bearings back in his truck so he went to the parts store and got some Timken, made in USA bearings to put back in his truck. I found out later that Timkens were being built in several foreign countries. he just got lucky. Later on when he quit driving I bought the truck. A couple of years ago I replaced the front rotors and pads and decided to replace front bearings. I did find Timkens made in the USA online but it took some searching to find them. I had to smile when I pulled the old bearings out and they were stamped USA.

I definitely learned a lot through watching your video. I recently purchased a large capacity compressor with a 5hp 220v GE MO-3022-1 motor attached. The motor wasn't working and started researching, which is how I came upon your video. I can see all kinds of greasy mess through the vents. I can't imagine it is supposed to be like that. Grease should only be right at the bearings right?
@stephensilvea86544 жыл бұрын
Flippy switch,is a centrifugal switch,it spins making contact with rotor until it reaches 75 percent of the motor speed and it will cut out,at that point it will operate by induction.

Thanks for the video! Wish your motor wasn't so clean though. I've got an antique Robbins & Myers I looked into here and it's filthy. Also wondering what you guys do when the bearing types aren't conveniently listed on the name plate. I'll look for numbers if I get that far.

Interesting video but on a safety note, you could have received a nasty shock had there been a wiring issue on your motor when you turned it on. You should never turn on a large motor when it is unsecured and you should never rest your hand on the metal casing when switching it in or while it is running

this motor still had a mechanical noise after replacing bearings.the drive end bell bearing housing should have been turned and sleeved to a snug fit of the bearing.center punching or loctiting bearing surface won't last.....fyi the part that turns inside of motor is called a rotor unless it has windings and commutator or slip rings on it than it is called an armature,and the part on the opposite end is called a centrifugal switch, that rides against a set of contacts, the c/s opens at 75% of full load speed taking the start winding and capacitor or capacitors( if any) out of the circuit.testing the motor for shorts,grounds or opens in winding should be performed before any mechanical work is to be done.

Hi Jamey, on high end motors, the label tells you the numbers (like 6203) for the bearings. On others, you won't know until you get it apart. I would suggest that most motors will use 6203 bearings. Big motors will sometimes use 6205.

ok, Thanks. I have a Dayton 1/4hrs motor attached to a bubble sander. It got to the point when I cut it on I would have to spin the pulley to get it going, now it just hummes. I can spin the shaft with my hand so does that rule out bearings being an issue ? What could it be? I would like to order parts and try and fix it. Thanks

I am designing an electric motor. I am facing a lot of difficulty. This video teaches a lot. Thanks. My question is: How the external fan cools the motor? Because the end plates completely seals the internal parts.
@RCshowmen10 жыл бұрын
The heat from inside the motor is carried by conduction to the metal case of the motor and that in turn is being cooled by the fan's convection as it pulls cool air across it.

That kind of pressure is very dangerous! Your motor just can't put out the kind of work required to go to that pressure. You need a pressure regulator, and over-pressure switch. Those things can blow, and kill you.

A single phase motor has 2 windings of copper coils one to start it in the right direction the other to maintain it once the armature is up to speed. the switch he keeps referring to as "flippy" is a centrifugal switch that turns the starter off.

As the author stated, the tag was worn out. I guarantee that someone scrapped the motor because they could not identify it. Some people have the misconception that small electric motors are not worth rebuilding. In my opinion this is false. Either they did not feel up to rebuilding this motor, or they felt that the motor wasn't worth rebuilding. The bearing numbers were not listed, requiring a trip to the bearing house for bearing guys to i.d. the said bearings. It just isn't worth the hassle for many people. We have to also consider that the author said that a newer model had superseded it which he then wrote on the housing. The box was also missing, leaving a tell-tale sign that the box was carried over and mounted to another motor.

I'll buy the wavy washer-but the flippy thing and the key makes my head hurt. If you know what you are doing-you can put a bearing on like he said, but where the endbell was bad, he should have peenied the heck out of it before checking the bearing for fit, then used the retainer. Anyone else notice the UL listing and the fact he said it was explosion proof? If he sells it to someone else, depending on where it is being used, if it should fail and go boom, his butt will be sued because he is a back yard mechanic, not a UL listed shop. PS-I own an electric motor repair shop.
