J & I took a drive up the Rogue River on a lark. Most of the tourists are gone for the season so we figured we'd rock hound a few of the high traffic bars to see what's left after a season of being picked over.
I got about 10 paces from the rig when I saw that bright red in the sun. At first I thought it was a jasper. Then I saw the botryoidal formations and that intense electric red. Intensely colored agates aren't unheard of, but they aren't found every day.
A brief cleaning and bright led light examination revealed no major defects . This agate is making the top of the list for carving. It should produce a 10 ounce gem. I've been searching for project stones to film. The agate carving videos seem to be quite popular. Maybe I'll do it as a live stream....

Probably the same format as the blue agate but a little more refined.

Thanks for subscribing. I love the whole nodules. That nodule is a tough one. There's some spectacular plume agate encasing it. I'm contemplating how to expose as much of the red while highlighting the unusual rind of and equally rare stone. It's like a rockhounding nesting doll.

That's a really unique nodule! I've never found or seen one like that, it's kind of an oddball. Would be a good one to polish if you have the skill. I would be worried about messing up the botryoidal areas!

It's easy with a hand piece. I don't readily disclose the level of lapidary knowledge and skill I possess. I try to keep it fun and approachable. People's eyes glaze over when I talk about color choice as it relates to the psychology of adornment, or solder placement when assembling bezel settings. People only want to hear that when some hack is making over priced work jewelry or 2 inch thick rope chains with gaudy pop culture charms. meh.... I'll push the joy of finding what you like, and seeing where your imagination can take you.

I actually came up with a word for that a couple of days ago cleaning off Nevada petrified wood. Enchertification. Holy crap, spell check didn't even underline it. Is it an actual word? nope, capitalized.

I think it's petrifaction by means of silicate cementing. Like pouring honey on bread. The sugars are at a point just past saturation. The saturated solution cements out sugars strengthening the underlying structure before crystal formation. With rocks, it could take eons, but the principle is the same.

That is one that you probably want to leave just the way it is. If you mess it up you'll regret it, not to mention it could be decades before "if" you ever find another.

It's going to be another carver. I never worry about "messing up". Life would be dull if everyone held off doing something for fear of messing up. You only get one shot at the life you're given. Make the most of it.

I would cut it if I were you to really say what the agate is doing in the stone. Probably get some beautiful jewelry out of that. It doesn’t look that dirty may be a little soak in citric acid

It took an acid bath before it's closeup. It might get sliced, but that depends on what the final gem looks like after polishing. If the shape is wild and the pattern visible, it's going to be left whole. All depends on how the gem behaves as it's cut.
