Electric Steering Torque Sensor-Why the steering wheel spins on it's own after installation

Here is a video explaining why the steering wheel spins all the way, left or right, on it's own after installing a torque sensor. Something in the steering column moved during reassembly causing the angle and torque discs in the sensor to get out of alignment.

Thank you, we could not figure out why the calibration would not work!! Answered our question perfectly!

You need a diagnostic tool! 1) Hook it up the connector but dont install. 2) moke the rear spinner until the torque reads zero on your diagnostic tool. 3) line up the forward facing spinner with the arrows.. 4) if you can, istall while connected so you can keep an eye on the torque reading and adjust as necessary

Replaced an EPS sensor then after a few months it failed again. I aligned the original one and put it back...had it working for several months and now failed again. What I plan to do is put epoxy between the spline and the lower part sensor so that it stays aligned always. The upper part sensor has slot to fit in and does not change its alignment. Will it work?

i begun my own project...and still learning a lot about these sensors...(ima newbie to put it this way...) recently my car alfa romeo had a bad sensor witch caused the steering lose power(caused by the used sensor) so instead buying a new EPS i decided to buy the tools to replace the sensor on my own(eventualy doing the hole thing,basicaly replacing all the parts that are exposed to wear including electronics) so basicaly...im a bit upsed since i did calibrated the sensor...put it back in to the steering column/box and the result was 98% acurate. the tool shows the sensor is calibrated but the car...says its a bit off.. those sensors even calibrated while disassembled they tend to de-calibrate just a slight while ur re-mounting the hole thing i even noticed just a slight touch on the sensor it self it goes off the target.. i wish i could learn more about these and maybe il make these as a job for my self by helping others with this problem.(replacing the sensor and/or electronics parts,basicaly regenerating the hole EPS)

After installing the new sensor the steering wheel pulls to the right and it seems that it’s harder to turn the steering left than to the right

Thanks for the info. My first attempt resulted in the wheel going hard right,on start up. Dismantled inspected,reassembled alignment pin. Second attempt was successful. I am wondering if the problem is related to spline engagement depth. If sensor is pushed too hard the angle sensor splines may partially engage torque-section splines on shaft. Too little depth may have torque section of sensor hanging up on angle section of shaft splines. They wouldn't be misaligned, but aligned correctly on the same shaft section. I didn't have time to compare depth measurements. Perhaps someone could verify my suspicions. Thanks again.

Depth can be an issue. There is a depth setting on the alignment tool. This is discussed in the instructions link we provide. Basically, the sensor depth should be set by setting it in only as far as the alignment tool will allow it to go down.

Could a fault or install problem cause the steering to sort of lock at different angles while driving for example steering left at 25 mph and the steering doesn’t rectify when you accelerate it continues to stay at that exact angle and turn the car?

I dont understand how it can be installed wrong when the pin is in the hole and the tabs are in the master spline? How does it get out of line?
@powersteeringseals4085
@powersteeringseals4085 Ай бұрын
After the pin is removed, during re-assembly, if the column moves slightly, the 2 discs in the sensor will get out of alignment from each other causing the spinning issue. It should then be remove and try to realign the discs as I show in the video, then reinstall.

I have a question... I'm going to replace the power steering torque sensor to a Chevy Malibu 2012 It is absolutely necessary to calibrate the sensor with a scanner after being replaced? I will appreciate your answer... thanks!

Absolutely necessary, maybe not. If the install is done correctly, it may be fine. But I'd be prepared to calibrate.

It's out of alignment. Remove, realign as directed in this video, reinstall. DO NOT let anything in the column move during reassembly.

You can realign it and put back the pin before inserting the whole sensor assembly. The problem is the fine spline where the lower sensor fits tightly (or not) but loses its alignment in time...

Thanks, I have the same issue, may I ask what does the retaining wire hold, is it just the two discs or more. Can the retaining wire be re-installed if you re-aligne the two discs. Many thanks Geoff
@powersteeringseals4085
@powersteeringseals4085 Жыл бұрын
Retaining wire=lock pin? The lock pin holds the 2 disc's in alignment until the sensor is installed and aligned. The spinning is caused when something moves during re-assembly of the column and the discs get out of alignment. You can remove the sensor and try to realign the discs as I show and reinstall the pin. It will go in straight when they are in alignment.

@@powersteeringseals4085 many thanks, I don't know the history of the unit and it's going into a custom car. This unit sensor seems very sensitive to the natural zone, i used a drill to align the two discs and had a play with it on the bench and managed to make it work with the sensor out and moving it both ways. Thank you so much. One question are they always very sensitive to the natural zone. Point of interest the grove machined in the shafts is much larger than the bottom pin, is this normal and I assume there are no other bits to take up the slack.

@@geoffhoyle479 Yes, these units are VERY sensitive. Yes, the torque disc tab is smaller on purpose.
