This video is a detailed guide of everything you need to know about brushing your teeth with a manual or electric toothbrush and flossing. I really hope you find my video helpful and a special thank you to Dr Ehsan for being so helpful with this weeks video and answering all of my questions in detail.
Feel free to show Dr Ehsan some love on instagram by following him @DentistEhsan - / dentistehsan
Special thank you to Hewett's dental for kindly letting us use their beautiful dental practice to film in. Show them some love on instagram by following them - / hewetts_dental
VIDEO CONTENT INDEX:
1 - How to brush teeth using a manual toothbrush.
2 - How to brush teeth using an electric toothbrush.
3 - How to floss teeth.
4 - Oral hygiene questions and common mistakes.
ORAL HYGIENE QUESTIONS:
1 - Should you rinse your mouth with water after you brush your teeth?
2 - Should you floss your teeth or brush first?
3 - Should you use mouthwash after brushing your teeth?
4 - How often should you change your toothbrush or electric toothbrush head?
5 - How long should you wait after eating food before you brush your teeth?
6 - What if you don't like the physical act of flossing or it keep tearing?
7 - What if the gaps between your teeth are too big for the floss?
8 - What toothpaste would you recommend?
9 - Should you clean your tongue? And how should you clean it?
FOOD AND BRUSHING TEETH:
It’s important to note that brushing your teeth immediately after eating can in some cases have a negative effect on your tooth enamel. If you have consumed something acidic, you should avoid brushing your teeth for about 30 minutes afterwards.
Foods that contain citric acid, like oranges, grapefruits and lemons, can soften tooth enamel for a time, and brushing too soon after eating them may damage the enamel while it’s in its weakened state.
In general, try eating nutritious foods that are low in sugar and carbohydrates after eating something acidic. This will help reduce the harmful acids that such foods can create.
In addition, prolonged exposure to phosphoric acid, which is often found in soft drinks, can erode your tooth enamel, exposing the more sensitive tissues beneath. Acid erosion can cause permanent damage to your teeth, so to keep it to a minimum, limit snacking between meals and limit your consumption of soft drinks and sugary snack foods.
FLUORIDE CONTENT IN TOOTHPASTES:
• Children under 3 years old should brush twice daily, with a smear of toothpaste containing at least 1,000ppm fluoride.
• Children between 3 and 6 years old should brush at least twice daily with a pea-sized amount of toothpaste containing more than 1,000ppm fluoride.
• Adults should brush at least twice daily with a toothpaste containing 1,350-1,500ppm fluoride.
Don't use mouthwash at the same time as brushing. Use it at an alternative time, because it washes away the fluoride in the toothpaste
If you still have any questions feel free to leave a comment below and we will add it to the list for a potential future video with Dr Ehsan.
Please note: All information given in this video is general advice, you should always speak with your dentist if any issues arise.

Summary: With a manual brush use a 45 deg angle, make circular motions Split mouth into 4 sections, 30 secs each. brush the inner, outer, and biting surface With electric: same as manual, just don't need to make circular motions Curve floss into c shape, go down into gums, scrape along tooth, do for each side Spit out excess toothpaste, don't rinse ***note: at the 2:07 sec mark he rubs his arm, as if he's nervous (since it's a controversial statement) I myself have fluorosis, which is white spots on teeth caused from excessive fluoride when teeth are developing. There’s no long-term studies on how much is effective for kids of all sizes, so it’s best to be careful and use your own judgement here. Fluoride is controversial for a good reason but I think it’s effective in the correct dose. I would keep the toothpaste in every 3rd time without rinsing and only use fluoride toothpaste once every day at max (so refrain from rinsing every 3rd day) the rest of the time I’d use a non-fluoridated toothpaste that has xylitol. Better to floss first, then brush. Give half an hour before mouthwash, use a fluoride mouthwash (I disagree about the fluoride) for lunch if you didn't brush Wait 15-20 minutes after eating to brush to avoid acidity If there's a gap between teeth, use an interdental brush (get a specific brush for a specific gap)

Hey Abraham, I had a dentist appointment for deep cleaning this weekend and she asked me to check for videos on Bass brushing technique on KZbin - I told her i am concerned about receding gums and she said the brushing technique is as important as brushing twice daily. I love love the huge amount of info on your videos, i'll look out for that amount of fluoride in toothpaste from now on. I was traumatized by the dentist deep clean experience, I pray i never have to do it again (;__;) Thanks for such a fun informative video! You're excellent ^-^

Thanks. I've been told that actually you should only brush 45 secs total to not damage your teeth. On the other hand, I've also been told that you need to brush each tooth surface for 3 seconds... I use that method but that takes pretty long in total. That's 9 seconds per tooth. I know about the 2 mins as well but that's pretty annoying for me to use, I see my teeth as having 18 parts. Basically 3 lines for the upper teeth, 3 for the lower ones and 3 surfaces per tooth. As for mouthwash, I've often heard that damages your mouth. Toothpaste I need to rinse out or it feels wrong and tastes gross. As if I swallow fluoride every time I swallow and will die from it. That's the sense it gives me. Lastly, after my braces were taken out a small metal strip was sort of glued to the back of my bottom teeth, to avoid them ever going out of place again. However, I literally can't floss there at all. My teeth touch one another so I can't get it in between there. I use a... No idea what it's called in English. A tiny tiny brush on a stick that you stick between your teeth. Like a toothpick, but then it's a small brush. Is that OK to use? The floss technique shown here was also taught to me wrong apparently. I was taught to move back and forth instead of scraping from down to up. This makes so much more sense. Sheesh, I feel like I've been taught everything wrong. Oh right one more thing. As soon as I even touch my tongue with that buzzing electric toothbrush I get a gag reflex. If I turn it off and so it gently that way I can hold on a bit longer, but I gag even from brushing the middle of my tongue, let alone the back. So I prefer not to. Is there a tip to get over the gag reflex? Its so strong I sometimes get it while brushing too, just from the idea that toothpaste gets in my throat. So it's probably partially 'between my ears'

@mbaksa
@mbaksa 4 жыл бұрын
That is not a problem. That would mean brushing your teeth more than twice a day, and that would cause more damage to tooth enamel due to brushing (toothpastes are abrasive), and you want to avoid that. Also, you should not brush your teeth right after a meal anyways. Just use a mouthwash. And maybe the main part - the main purpose of brushing your teeth is to prevent forming a buildup of plaque (bacterial biofilm), and to remineralize your teeth - both can be achieved by brushing your teeth twice a day - once in the morning (half an hour after breakfast, or before breakfast if you don't have half an hour to wait for pH to return to normal), and half an hour after you last meal in a day.

Not a doctor, but my allergist suggested an over the counter nose spray for post nasal drip, like Flonase or Nasacort, that can be taken in conjunction with allergy pills every day. I recommend Flonase Sensimist for everyday comfort and Nasalcort maybe during bad flare ups. After inserting the spray tip, angle it towards the outside corner of your eye on each respective side. This is important as it will target glands in your nose instead of going down the back of your throat. Post nasal drip can cause a lot of problems, even bronchial irritation. Of course, check with your doctor first, especially if you’ve had glaucoma or cataract surgery as there are tiny print warnings about those conditions on these types of products.

What I personally do is, floss and use alcohol based mouth wash(green color) first, then brush my teeth, then use a fluoride based mouth wash(purple color) and done. Feel clean asf ✨

But if you don’t wash your teeth afterwards all the bacteria and food leftovers will stay there. Especially if you floss before-than the toothbrush will kind of spread it all over. Please explain!!!! Thank you 🙏🏾

In my experience, soft toothbrushes are better. The first time I used a soft toothbrush I realized that medium and hard ones are basically fake. They look like toothbrushes but their bristles are too stiff to act like a brush. I thought I was brushing my teeth but all I really did was torture my hand and my mouth with those things. I also found it impossible to brush behind my front teeth and thought I must be stupid or lazy or something. Now I know it was because the brushes were too stiff. I also avoid very cheap brushes. A cheap "soft" toothbrush is still hard compared to a more expensive soft one. Just try out different toothbrushes and see what works best for you.

You actually need to fix your digestion. I think it's too bad in your case. Acid reflux and feeling like puking while cleaning tounge is a good sign. Do a full day water fast every week and eat clean, stay away from daily for this period and see drastic improvement in this.

My sister used a fluoride free toothpaste for a year or so because she thought it was better, and when she went to the dentist again she had 10 cavities 😳😳😳 (before then she’d never had more than 1 at a time and only a couple in her life)
@greenkitty82
@greenkitty82 3 жыл бұрын
Kea Lynn Really? That's surprising. I've used a fluoride free toothpaste for over 20 years and I've not had a single cavity and have absolutely no fillings. Try look at the diet too. Teeth rely heavily on minerals which you get from organic produce and I think that as well as completely avoiding junk and sugar is what has kept my teeth fine.
