In this video we are taking my old YZ85 dirt bike frame that I've had for years and converting it to electric. We are using a 72V 8000W hub motor and converting it to mid drive to solve the unsprung weight issue that hub motors have and installing the motor on the swing arm.

Gotta love the big hub, instant torque surge. Puts a smile on your face every time. More flux/field weakening will up your top speed at cost of range. Adjust your battery amps until it starts to trip your BMS and back it off a bit. Increase phase amps for more off the line and initial acceleration.

@firstname9811 an 85 can power wheelie? How light are you? Remember, no clutch to dump on electric. I have used a G450X for a while though. That can power wheelie, once it's in its power band. Something you don't have to do with electric, the torque is instant, no hanging around. Did you even understand the comment I left? Do you know what phase amps are vs battery amps? Field weakening?

This project definitely interest me more than the others. I think small frame dirtbikes are better than larger bikes when it comes electric conversions. Just look at the market, there are tons of electric pitbikes for a affordable price. I cannot say the same for electric dirtbikes, even when made from scratch they'll still cost to much. Pitbikes/small framed dirtbikes are just awesome in general.

Nice! No chain noise, More power, Helmet on, No gears, so no clutch in when changing them, PERFECT! I'm even more envious for that one than for the e-pit bike, although I must say that my eyes opened wide, when I saw a selection of an outrunner motor for this project :) It ended up great though! Would love to have such a vehicle :) Silent but fun! Great project.

There's definitely something special about small electric dirt bikes that has a charm I can't explain, I'd like to see you try it on the road w/ street tires supermoto style.... I have a Razor MX650 like that that I've modified and it is so much fun because people don't expect it to be fast but they are. A 72v 10,000w system can get you in the 60s easily on a kids toy.... I'm glad you've finally found an electric bike that finally works the way I've been wanting them to work for you, congrats and now I want to see you build more electric toys. 😁👍

I'd say let it stick at the speed it's at. More speed on this would only drain the battery pointlessly. First take it down a goat path and see what it can do. Also, yeah, the front suspension isn't quite right. Probably needs a rebuild. You've done an excellent job with this one. As bikes go, this one's your best yet.

Always inflate the new tube slightly before fitting into the tyre 👌👌👌
@aserta
@aserta 11 ай бұрын
And use ludicrous amounts of talcum powder (just don't breathe it). It helps not only installing the tire over the tube, but also in use, because instead of chaffing and wearing down the tube inside the much harder tire, the talcum allows it to slip inside and rearrange itself more easily.

I’m actually happy that you put a kickstand onto this build. It’s so damn annoying most bikes just don’t have them. Also I’d change the gearing just slightly, like a larger front sprocket by one tooth or so. Higher top speed, but a hair less torque.

My dad on the other hand is like or, we can throw everything in the trash except for this triangle thing. I would just start screaming no! It's never going to get done! But then the end result would be awesome. I remember roasting the tires of my monster truck golf cart back at the golf course when I worked there as a kid, like it was yesterday. We pretty much started the monster truck golf cart ran around here LOL.

Be very careful with your regen settings now that you eliminated the freewheel on the motor. Setting the regen to 100% will send you over the bars just from letting off the throttle quickly. That said, you may like it set to 60-80% if you like massive motor braking.

If you're not going to reuse that hub motor on a rear wheel again you can shave down the outer diameter quite a bit to remove weight and the overall diameter. Your lathe should be able to fit it, I know my dad's manual Kent lathe to machine down the diameter of my 8Kw hub motor which was able to remove 3/4 inch all the qa around with sill having enough protection of the magnets. I was able to lower my mini side-by-side frame for a lower CG and have more clearance. It looks cool too when it's all silver. You gotta love that instant torque using the hub motor as a chain drive mid-mount motor. Your YZ 85 came out sweet.

that’s a sik bike build! You did a real nice job. Gonna program the controller for regen? You have the spinning mass of the motor to slow down on the rear brake, as well as the wheel. I think regen would help lots with stopping and slowing down. Keep a close eye on the six tapered bolts that fasten your front sprocket to the motor…you don’t want those loosening up! cheers, dude! Great build, really want to see how this handles in the dirt! If you're looking for more power and top speed, go higher voltage. So a new battery and a controller will do that. The motor won't run in to trouble from a higher voltage, it will actually run cooler for the same power output (as will the phase wires). For example the 100V 250A Trampaboards VESC one is about a quarter of the volume of your current ESC and will easily double the theoretical max power and increase top speed with a higher voltage (and/or with some field weakening). Pair this with a Cycle Analyst display. I've used it in my own projects and its well worth the extra spend compared to cheaper VESC controllers. I run it at 90v +6kW peak and it is barely warm to the touch after an hour. Setup/tuning will be a bit more involved tho, but likely has a lot more knobs to turn than what you're on now. Consider it if this one happens to give up the magic smoke... Heat buildup is a big problem for these large hubs, but injecting it with some ferrofluid and adding some cooling fins will help a lot there. Make sure to check the motor casing after some running time, ideally water/spit shouldn't sizzle away or burn a unprotected hand.. You could also look into regenerative brakes to improve on the brake performance and reduce wear. Finally, I would be *VERY* careful with that battery as it is, I seem to recall you run it with limited or no BMS (also not sure about the cells in that thing)? This is a serious fire hazard both when charging and discharging.
