If you are starting from Vn to Va shouldnt it be Vna instead?

Because Van = Va - Vn (it makes sense: Vn = 0 so if Van equals for example 220 V, then Van = Va - Vn, this should be in your textbooks). Since the voltage increases from Vn = 0 to Va = for example 220 V, he's counting +Van. Another way to see it is to use arrows (in one direction for voltages sources, in the other for loads. Then you choose a direction randomly in which you loop. If you loop in the same direction as the arrow as you apply Kirchoff's rule then it's positive, else it's negative). That's what I understood.
