How to use insulation tester (Megger)? |Explained

What is insulation tester or mega ohmmeter or megger? How to use it?

Hint:
We use guard terminal for this reason: Large cables, windings, power transformers, electrical bushings and other assets that have large surface areas can become contaminated by dirt or even a thin film of moisture. These conditions tend to lead to significant surface leakage current which can seriously affect the measurement of the true insulation leakage current.

Can I use it for low voltage wires and devices like 12VDC and 48VDC?

You can use it in only on condition!! First be sure that the cables isn't connected to any devices,, second the cable insulation rating must be 300v for example to megger it with 250v test

What reading will tell me that the device is faulty or not?... how do read my mega tester?

For low voltage motors any readings below 1.4 mega ohm,,, for medium voltage any readings below 12 mega ohm,, for any circuit any readings below 0.5 mega ohm

For low volatge applications chauvin arnaux is great, for medium voltage application i recommend megger brand
