That is just the way it is. An observation no different than like charges repelling. It is just what is observed in nature and then we come up with equations to explain the experimental observations.

What is repulsing the filings before the power is turned on? Before the cut at 1:03 you can see the displacement of the iron filings around the wire.

When I turn the power on, the magnetic field is strong enough to rotate the filings close to the wire. I have to then tap the plastic to get the filings further away to rotate.

The loops…. Is the other part of the loop / circle of wire outside the view of the camera? Or what is meant by loop? Thinking if the whole loop is here then current is going one way in 5 of the wires and the other way in the other 5 wires so how would they interact? Vs if the loops are really big and we can not see the other side of the loop? Thank you!!
@electricandmagneticfields2314
@electricandmagneticfields2314 10 ай бұрын
Yes, the rest of the large loop is outside the view of the camera. So in the region of the filings, the magnetic field from the wire where it starts to loop is insignificant. The current is going in the same direction in each of the wires in order to get a larger effective current in the vicinity of the iron filings.

One thing I don't like about this method is that the iron filings themselves become tiny magnets and stick together. This actually changes the way that they behave, and influences the results.

The friction of the iron filings on the plastic hold them in place. That is why I had to tap on the plastic to get them to rotate along the field lines. In this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5K9YZtta71pmpI you can see the problem you point out. The iron filings rotate along the magnetic field lines but then they start drifting towards the poles of the magnet.

@electricandmagneticfields2314
@electricandmagneticfields2314 5 жыл бұрын
I don't recall the orientation with respect to the earth's magnetic field when this was filmed. The field from the earth is too weak to move the iron filings, so that is why they remain random until a current is flowing through the stranded wire. The field drops off with distance from the wire and why the iron filings at the edge of the field of view remain randomly oriented.

@electricandmagneticfields2314
@electricandmagneticfields2314 5 жыл бұрын
OK, I now understand your question. It would probably be a 10 minute video to properly answer, which is now on my to do list for this summer. But let me see what I can do in a few sentences. For the wire we have what are referred to as free currents generating the magnetic field. There is a magnetic flux density, B, and a magnetic field intensity, H, with B = (mu sub o) H. The B and H fields are continuous and mapped out by the iron filings. In a magnet we have bound currents that generate the magnetic field. The bound currents are the electrons in orbit and the electron spin. We now will have three fields, B, H, and magnetization M, with B = (mu sub zero)(H+M). The magnetic flux density still forms closed loops, that is B is continuous. H and M are not continuous. M only exits inside the magnet and the north pole of the magnet is a source of H and the south pole a sink of H. Hope that helps a little. @@carlosnoriega7296
@carlosnoriega7296

@@electricandmagneticfields2314 so in reality there is no such a thing as north and south pole? Are those just two points that we use as reference? Because in a permanent magnet the magnetic field lines go through the magnet's body forming a loop?
@electricandmagneticfields2314
@electricandmagneticfields2314 5 жыл бұрын
Yes the lines are continuous, so if they are outside a wire there is no place to call a north or south pole. When they are from a permanent magnet we designate where they emerge as the north pole and where they enter as the south pole. @@carlosnoriega7296

Well OK "Prof. M" what is the point or objective of this exercise? So suppose I'm a curious grade schooler, say 11 years old, and magnetic and magnetism are keeping my curious mind busy. But stumbling upon this video I see that this device can be diy homemade by myself and that's got me on a scavenger hunt for parts. But what's missing from this instructionally video, well it's not instructional and not caution or safety instructions shared not even a get out of jail free legal disclaimer. So how would a person young or old know that all copper wires are not equal, especially when it comes to how copper is dressed up in different coverings dependant upon specific of circuit. I've no way to know that your ten twisted copper wires are all evenly coated in enamel or other such material, heavy gauge wire. So one amp multiplied by ten equals ten, great instructions. Now dependant upon what I do with the business end of each wire, may very well determine what happens to my body and this life. In USA shove each end into wall outlet, now we find out if your god is good, is this outlet protected by a GFCI or not, what is the breaker rated to in amps outside in that box, most people fear. There are so many varieties of devices access the world to energize a wire with. So how many lives have been altered or ended due to curiosity and a complete lack of safety instructions. Bet if this was an academic paper presented for peer review might it cut the mustard.
