I own a recumbent tadpole trike and the thought of going over 20 mph on it is scary. Many trikes have pretty twitchy steering in my opinion, and could cause some problems in urban riding. I have had an electric bike, and there is a problem with some motors having water from heavy rain getting inside and ruining them. Most companies won't warranty water damage. Having said that, the new Falco motors do have a five year warranty and seem to be very well built. With a trike being so low to the ground.... make sure your warranty covers water damage

randy mccumber Interesting point, I know they've positioned the motor above the body and below/behind the seat to keep it away from the elements. I like the belt drive design of this product. It's pretty custom all the way around and they offer fenders to help with water.

I bet if you reached out to them directly and expressed interest in the speed version they might build you one or maybe even sell the one they broke the record with. They are very easy to reach and work with, just visit their site: www.outriderusa.com/

This video got me thinking about recumbent aero bikes. If you put an aero shell on this and upped the power & range, you would probably have a vehicle replacement for a large portion of travel needs.

Absolutely, I saw an experimental velomobile earlier this year that fits your description perfectly, not much room for transporting items and not as many safety features as I'd like for high speed on roads with full sized autos but the prospect of future efficient transport is very exciting. Have you seen the Outrider Horizon: electricridereview.com/outrider/horizon/
@AndrejGobec

Recumbent trikes are hands-down the most easy, comfortable and safe pedal-powered things out there! Having said that there are a few things to watch out for, especially when giving them superpowers like these Outriders! You absolutely need pedals that fix your shoe. Your feet are forward and close to the ground. Imagine you hit a bump at high speed and one foot loses grip on the pedal and falls down to the floor. It can break your leg! The other thing is break steer and break dive. If brakes are not properly setup one wheel can break harder then the other and the trike actually steers to one side under braking (same thing happened on cars without ABS). Break dive happens if you apply too much brake on front wheels. It's the same effect as on any other bike - you fly head over the handlebars, but here you just tip down with the boom, pedals and your feet. But if all this is properly taken care of you have one of the sweetest rides available!! :)
@ElectricBikeReview
@ElectricBikeReview 10 жыл бұрын
Great tips Andrej, I can't comment on how the Outrider guys have addressed the braking suggestions but I do know they've got a special system in place to smooth out turns and keep braking consistent. I think it's a good suggestion to use your own clip-in pedals to keep feet safe. Do you ride a recumbent bike?
@AndrejGobec
@AndrejGobec 10 жыл бұрын
I do have a recumbent, yes. Opted for it partly for the same reason you started using electric assisted bikes and partly because I wanted something different. No regrets, yet! If I buy another bike it'll be recumbent as well. Only downside - they're not cheap. But on the upside, they're usually so well made you'll be able to pass them on to your grandkids!

Andrej Gobec That's awesome! Which one do you have and do you like it? I've seen a few electrified recumbents but they are more rare: electricbikereview.com/tag/recumbent/ growing up my friend had a BikeE two wheel recumbent and it was a neat experience to try :)

Electric Bike Review I own an Azub Mini. www.azub.eu/CZ/recumbent-bike-azub-mini/ Azub is a manufacturer from Czech Republic. I am from EU, so this is a good choice for me. German manufacturers are much more expensive as are recumbent trikes (like www.icetrikes.co/ which probably produce the best trikes in the world). Yeah, theres a learning curve involved riding these things but if yours gets stolen you know it was by another recumbent rider and there's not that many of those around ;)

@ElectricBikeReview
@ElectricBikeReview 9 жыл бұрын
Zed Bowman They feel very stable thanks to the tadpole design. I think they can even drift a bit but given the smaller contact patch they might also be prone to tipping depending on the road surface. Even if you didn't tip, it wouldn't be fun to crash into a car or other fixed object riding one of these...

Electric Bike Review I really like my tadpole Rambler but it does and has gone over without much provocation. The rider does sit high on this on the Rambler which I am sure has a lot to do with it but I bought it as it is easy to mount and dismount. Next year I will be looking to purchase a new trike but only if I find one considerably more stable.

I've a recumbent trike, & 20mph is ok if it'll save me winching uphill as a pedal assist. But as a power drive? Geesh! I get 40mph going downhill freewheeling, but would prefer 50mph on some of our local roads - any slower is suicide as cars come up behind me from a blind bend. I don't care for 'law enforced' speed restriction, & I've not seen the law driving around my place (I'm way out in the countryside) for 8 years! I just need to find something electric & fast that I can build into my trike. Oh, & seriously....NEVER, EVER ride a recumbent with standard pedals, coz if your foot slips off at speed, your leg from the knee down will be trashed; get SPDs!

a small diameter sprocket to large dia. sprocket is always considered step down in RPM, not up. but with less RPM you do get more torque, perhaps this is the "step up" you are talking about?
@ElectricBikeReview
@ElectricBikeReview 9 жыл бұрын
Great point, I think that's exactly what is going on here... it steps down the RPM but provides more torque as a result. You get a sense of power and the ability to climb well even though this is relatively heavy compared with traditional electric bicycles. Thanks again!

I'm not sure if I would want to go ripping down the tarmac at 85MPH on one of these things though and certainly wouldn't want to put one in the rhubarb at that speed! AMAZING BUILD and it's also great they try to manufacture everything in the US!

Yeah, these things are built for performane! The standard units go more like ~45 but that's still fast when you're basically on a bicycle. the newest model called the Horizon is great because it's so customizable and also includes suspension: electricbikereview.com/outrider/horizon/

I agree Frank! this thing is pretty amazing... The founders designed it to be able to command respect from drivers at higher speeds (without them trying to cut you off or get upset) but still be stable, efficient and safe. I really like the new Horizon they made that is adaptable to people who have limited body use. It can be configured with hand cranks or arm rods for people who are quadriplegic, letting them get back out into nature and have some independence :)

I have come down hills on my Catrike Trail hitting 43-45 mph and that is white knuckle speed. The low center of gravity makes them super stable but it is wise to never ride one without wearing the proper shoes so you can clip in to the pedals. These trikes are way to cool.

About mid drives Noise levels: they are usually noisy except for the Bafang BBSO2. This is a great and quiet mid drive however the distribution is not reliable. Most mid-drives (chain-drives) are noisy because of the chain on the sprocket and the internal gears. BaFang has this problem solved using a composite and wide gear internally. This was stated by a U.S. Bafang dealer. ref: eiproject.net/electric-bikes-mid-drive/

I am getting an Outrider 422 Alpha built tight now. It is in the 14K price range. The price is quite daunting but I am betting the thrill for the Bucks will be worth it. I do have two other electric trikes. My big concern is changing the rear tire. There is a lot of stuff that has to be taken apart and put back together. My other big concern is maintence support. I am working with Matt and his shop is on the east coast and I live on the west coast. The shipping cost of the bike one way is 650 dollars or more. Having a 14,000 dollar bike break down and shipping it back and forth at 1,300 dollars is quite pricey. My biggest concern is theft. Other than that, I am looking for a great adventure with this bike. Matt and his team have been very accommodating with me. But still the price and maintenance support and theft protection will be my biggest challenges. Over the past years I have loaded my bikes similar to this one on the back of my truck fairly easily. You just spin the bike backwards and lift the rear wheel up on your tailgate. The lock the front brakes on the hand grips with the little buttons. Then you just grab the two wheels and push the bike into your truck bed. I have a truck shell so the bike handle bars have to be low enough to clear the top of the shell. I also had to get the seat designed lower to clear the shell. The Outrider appears to have a long boom up front and I hope I have room on the back of my truck to close the rear shell door and lift the tail gate. The last thing I want to see is my 14K bike falling out the back of my truck and crashing into cars on the freeway through my rear view mirror. If anybody has purchased this bike in the state of California, I would like to talk to you so I can find out your maintence shop connections or maybe we can do a ride or form a group ride. I have 3 herniated lumbar disks and therefore prefer the recumbent bikes, but the position of this ‘deck’(?) is too low, not supporting the upper back and shoulders as much as I would want - plus, the head forward position required by the low recumbency looks like it would become tiring and painful after a time, like the awkward head position required by staring at digital devices for long periods of time. I’d like to see a review of differently pitched decks and, if there are any, decks with complete upper body and head support, especially for those trying to protect against spinal issues.

I haven't tested the range but they say between 50 to 160 miles (80.5 to 257.5 kilometers) depending on rider, terrain, weather and speed. It depends on how much you pedal, how many hills there are and what the wind is like basically... also your weight and the cargo matters :)

My Strong electric upright by comparison: Weight: 90lbs Weight capacity: 300lbs Voltage: 36 volts AmH: 17 Distance using "Smart" peddling: 90miles Cost new: $1,200 Cost used: $300 plus a set of batteries. Features: SPT Carbon Graphite Tri-Spoke wheels Rear internal Hub Motor (inside the cg wheels) Removable battery pack with fold down handle LED head and tail lights key switch controlled and hard wired into the system and option to have only the lights on when not running the motor. LED backlit "Fuel gauge" Front and rear shocks Optional Lithium battery pack and charger. Charge time: 3 hrs for Lithium; 12 hrs for NmH. Top Speed Motor only: 20 mph. And it's near silent when using the electric motor whether while pedaling or on its own at any speed. Unlike the trike in the video. Which howls like a banshee every time you hit the throttle. Pretty sad given the price tag. The idea of going "green" if you will, is not to limit accessibility to the wealthy, but make it affordable for the masses. Only then will there be any positive effect seen or felt. Trikes in general are way overpriced to begin with, but this one, despite how nice it is, takes it into the realm of absurdity.

once "the masses" get fast ebikes, the problems are going to start. Upright bikes allow you to use your legs as shocks is the big advantage. The outrider is worth the money, if you see one in person, things like the front suspension are automotive grade, or better

Well... That comment didn't age well and you edited it. A used 2012 model in 2020 cost ~$5k, a replacement battery cost ~$1k, and they take two batteries. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to be an idiot. Then I realize that idiots are too stupid to realize or, much less, explain what it's like. Something tells me that you have never wondered what it would be like or ever had a need to.

I live in Japan, but there are many general things that a bicycle is quite popular but Japan is common, and such thing thought that Japan which is not readily marketed is a developed country quite, but a budget does not follow what say that it is enthusiastic when after all the place such as your country runs after an ideal if accompanied by a canopy avoiding wind and rain feeling like being rich though an ideal is nearer (^ ^)

The price in USD is $11,995 and using a conversion rate of 1 to .59 (that's what it is today according to Google) then we get 7,020.16 GBP but you may have to pay more to have it shipped overseas from Durham North Carolina, USA.

BaconKwagga Sure, for all of the ebikes I review the price is listed back at the website at the very top of the page. You can get there by clicking the link in the video description so next time you won't have to watch the entire video if the bike is too expensive :P

I've seen several of you're reviews on ebikes and you never provide a msrp for them. Just curious as to why? I know I can do a Google search and find it, but it's just more convenient for me if you were to state it in your review. By the way I enjoy your reviews and keep up the good work. Ok well I didn't watch the full video so the founder actually said how much it cost. I feel dumb. Sorry.
@ElectricBikeReview
@ElectricBikeReview 9 жыл бұрын
No worries Alex, you're correct that many of my reviews skip MSRP. This is because I list it (along with all of the detailed specs) back at the full writeup and it's a lot easier to change there over time vs. video where it's kind of stuck. I link each review in the description for the video btw. I also review a lot of prototypes and demos that haven't got a set price yet and I don't want to mislead people so I just pass on it :)

I can't see the point of having 4200 Watts if the speed is restricted to 40mph. For this speed half of the power would probably be enought. Additionally the motor is way to loud, if they would use a regular hub motor, regardless if in the wheel or in the belt drive configuration it would be much quieter.

Hi Diane, prices vary since Outrider electric bikes are so custom. I didn't mention them in the videos because I wanted to keep them current and provide context so that info is all back at the website. Here's the link to each of their recent models electricbikereview.com/category/outrider/ and you can get more info back at their official site as well (linked at the bottom of each review). I really like the Outrider Horizon if you want suspension or have any special riding needs, it's completely customizable.

+mani raj with that kind of seat angle it's generally very comfortable. Head rests on recumbent trikes are really only used when you're not moving - when you're moving they just transfer vibrations and bumps from the road straight to your head, which really isn't comfortable at all!

It seems that the interviewer knows little about motors. He references it as, ". . . this is the motor." It would be interesting to know who manufactures the motor and the particular model used.
@ElectricBikeReview
@ElectricBikeReview 10 жыл бұрын
Sometimes that is disclosed and other times the company likes to keep it private. Here are some more details about the motor used on the Outrider 422 Alpha, they kept the brand private: 4,200 watt direct drive three phase brushless permanent magnet DC mid drive motor (8,000 RPM) connected to a Gates belt drive system, motor is 93% efficient and American made, uses a step-down belt gearing.

Well I figured out what this thing is missing. I really don't see the point in being this low to the ground, Perfect for Bubba to run you over with his monster truck. What a horrible eulogy that would be, JoBlow 40 years old died riding his tricycle. Ok what this thing needs is some of kind cool carbon fiber or fiberglass shell. Now if it looked way cool I would be interested in spending the big bucks this thing probably costs but otherwise it is a wacky looking tricycle.

@ElectricBikeReview 9 жыл бұрын
valhala56 Yeah, I think you're onto something there... I've seen a few "velomobiles" with shells that look very cool. That would reduce drag and protect the rider from the elements. This isn't exactly the same thing but I thought it would be worth sharing, it's a slower trike style recumbent with a cover (a large cover with a solar panel on top): electricridereview.com/organic-transit/elf/

ElectricBikeReview.com I love your reviews btw. I already have an electric bike conversion. A hilltopper mounted on a Trek mountain bike. I am going to be buying a fat tire electric soon. Something like the Prodeco Rebel or a Rad Rover which I don't think you have reviewed. Yet. I am pretty set on a fat tire bike but the Prodeco special edition outlaw with 1200 watt motor could sway me. I want some mountain climbing power!

+valhala56 That low to the ground makes a huge difference to wind speed and thus wind resistance. And as for visibility, doesn't matter what you're driving, you can spot a coke can on the road, so why wouldn't you see something ~8'x3'? Personally speaking I get a *lot* more breathing room from passing vehicles when I'm on my recumbent trike than I do when I'm on a regular upright.
