Thank you for all the help in choosing an ebike. I bought a Powerfly 4. With some add-ons, I think it is as useful as the FS 9 and only 2/3's the price. I almost returned the bike due to motor noise. But either I am adjusting to it or it has become quieter. It is more of a subdued growl than the shriek captured in the vid. I take some comfort that the cx motor is the only top tier motor with all metal internal gears. Metal gears are 3x stronger than plastic and not subject to heat failure.

It’s interesting that Trek chose a smartphone display for a full suspension mountain bike. I would have preferred the Purion for off road use especially since there would be a chance of your phone being ejected from the mount with hard riding. Quite a noisy bike. Thank you again for a thorough review.
@ElectricBikeReview
@ElectricBikeReview 4 жыл бұрын
I'm with you, and actually the Purion would be awesome here! This is mountain capable, but setup almost like a sport utility vehicle with the commuter rack, fenders, and lights. I'm mixed on the SmartphoneHub, it seems like Bosch has lots of options, and it would be great to choose them for each bike, but at least you can pay extra to swap in one of the others.
@markberry2785
@markberry2785 3 жыл бұрын
As an owner, I haven't experienced the noise the reviewer describes. I'm not a fan of the smartphone display. For simple functionality, Purion is easier to see and use. I'm interested in seeing how durable the mount is (I may be adding an aftermarket phone caddy so I can use both the native unit and my go-to app - RidewithGPS.com).

John Lewis I’ve been looking at electric bikes with motors ranging from 160nm Bafang torque monsters to these lower torque but better engineered Bosch systems. I consider this bike a beast not necessarily because of it’s motor, but rather for its components. If I’m being honest - I’m not convinced that current components are built to handle 160nm of torque, even with shift sensors. The cassette, derailleur, shifter, dropper post, suspension system, etc are impressive. I’m not convinced it’s worth the $$, but it has nicer components than I’ve seen from direct-to-consumer models. Would I bomb a mountain with this bike? Not a chance. I would take it through the transmission line right of way though, and I think it would handle it quite well based on this review. If I wanted speed I’d buy another motorcycle. I want a reliable e-bike that adds to the bicycling experience, rather than distracting me from it. I haven’t seen EBR take too many bikes down staircases...

ElectricBikeReview.com This was a top notch review, and really answered most of the questions I had about this bike. The full suspension looks functional rather than a decoration, and while I’m still learning about component quality, I appreciate that you’re able to address where the cassette, derailleur, shifter, etc fall on the spectrum. Watching you ride down the stairs was an eye opener as well. I struggle between buying a bike with the Bosch system vs a Bafang system, and between direct-to-consumer vs supporting locally owned business. I still haven’t made up my mind, but your reviews are the best and most unbiased resource available. Your reviews helped me realize that an electric bike could be a practical resource, if only for three seasons. One thing I know for certain - I wish that there was a Riese and Muller dealer in New Brunswick!

As someone that puts a lot of miles on a bike (including thousands of miles on R+M e-bikes), it is so nice to see Trek is taking a page from R+M's playbook, and not trying to make their bikes super light. My experience is the light weight approach is not so great an idea for an e-bike, especially one that gets ridden. It is a pain to have parts fail, and e-bikes put more stress on a bike's components - due mostly because they are heavier and get ridden more.

Just bought one and - after first ride - I'm hooked. Bike is beautiful in terms of fit and finish; paint is bland relative to many MTBs, but well-done given the limited palate used. I bought it for light trail & gravel riding with a friend (who's 10 years younger and wears me down on rides longer than 30 miles; Bosch will be a great equalizer). Bike is massive in terms of weight but didn't find it difficult to ride - even when motor was off and I was the only source of power. I didn't experience the whining sounds from the motor as the reviewer described. Smartphone is not required to operate; native "head" unit works fine. Interested in seeing how COBI app works when you're using other apps such as RidewithGPS or Strava. One thing is for sure - this is not going on a roof rack. At 60+ lbs. for the XL size, most roof racks would fail (and the bike itself is approximately 8" longer than either my road or gravel bike; not sure it would fit on the top of my Subaru Outback even if I could lift it that high).

Excellent report on the Powerfly EQ. I have the Verve+3 which I love but am looking at upgrading and this looks fabulous. One comment. I have the smartphone Hub and use an iPhone 12 Pro Max and have already had two smartphone cases break under warranty. It is the right bottom corner that breaks. After the first break I have been using it without the protective phone case to keep the volume down in the smart phone hub but it still broke. As I have the Verve+3 I am not riding on rough terrain so I am not abusing the hub. Bosch definitely need to do an improvement on this. Would love others comments.

The substance of a good review/evaluation is honesty. Call the Pros and Cons no matter where the chips fall and you do that... keep it real (Thumbs Up) . Good call on the charger door take note Trek. For some reason Trek has gone with the bland and drab paint scheme across their whole line. I witnessed a young guy test riding two bikes. He couldn't make up his mind (both similar group sets). Basically which color scheme do you like.....

Very nice, Court! I'm using as a commuter but prefer Full suspension. I would cover up the garish TREK lettering on the downtube. Suntour? Aw, no FOX? I wish Bosch would go to belt drive which seems to quiet down the whine...Thanks for pointing out the folly of the phone. I would drop mine taking it on or off. I really hate having to use a phone to ride an ebike! I'd def waiti for NYON - can'tbelieve they are finally bringing it to the US - thought NYON was Haibike related more so than Bosch...

Well, you can’t buy a 2021 model, seem to be sold out throughout the U.S. I have looked at every Trek dealer in my home area of St. Louis and they say the first available order from the factory is mid-December. Looked at dealers in Indianapolis, Chicago, Springfield, Kansas City, Louisville, no one has any. Most Trek Ebikes are sold out, but the FS EMTBs are down to a few models, mostly in the small size. I know, first world problems, but still frustrating once you decide you’d part with that kind of coin, to find none available.

Powerfly's look like a good "do it all" option. However, they are fairly heavy. Did you notice the weight while riding? It seems it would be difficult to ride without the motor engaged. Quite different but I was also looking at the Specialized Vado SL. The Vado clearly is not as versatile as the Powerfly, but it's substantially lighter.

So how does the power feel on these big brand ebikes? Is it impressive or is it just a little extra help? Can you essentially tackle any hill with ease? Do you ever wish it had more power? Thinking about buying one but wondering if I should go for a class 4 ebike. Tough choice because I would like a full suspension or nice HT that is as close to a normal bike as possible but at the same time I want decent and noticeable power. Your thoughts would be appreciated...
@YSPDJapan
@YSPDJapan Жыл бұрын
Do you want to go fast or do you have literal mountains to climb? These mid-drive bikes are great if you are tackling serious up-hill climbs during your rides. They minimize motor power and battery capacity so you can climb well, but the batteries don't give you that much range and the motors/gearing don't give that much top end speed. If you want to cruise at 20 mph, you're better off with a hub-motor E-bike that has a 4# or 52 front tooth sprocket. Or getting a MTB and changing the front ring to something larger. So again, if your ride has hills that literally require you to get off and walk, a mid drive is better, but you don't get any top end because the bike is geared for the climb. But if you don't have "must walk" hills, a hub drive has enough power to climb moderate hills and will be geared to give you 20+ MPH cruising for 30+ miles.

the watt hour rating is overestimated.. they use NCR18650GA cells which suffer from severe capacity loss in emtb or turbo mode because of pretty hard voltage sag. also running these cells in turbo mode will degrade them faster than let's say a battery filled with NCR18650 PF cells... most 21700 cells are actually much better suited for "high" power delivery while maintaining high capacity

Hmmm, I tested a Cube Stereo Hybrid 120 Allroad. I got very interested in this kind of bike. Also the Focus Thron. What is really surprising is the price difference. The Trek is 6000$ and the Cube is 3600€ in Europe. The only difference I see are the brakes. I think, I wouldn’t be ok with a SR Suntour on a 6000$ bike. Also the battery cover isn’t well thought. It’s one peace with the battery, so I HAVE to buy a second battery from Trek. You can’t just rent a second battery or something, because then the frame is open. A separated cover would’ve been way better.

Yeah, I don’t know what the deal is with the louder motor operation here. The CX is usually one of the loudest, but maybe with the 85nm software update it just got louder, or maybe the open motor armor lets more sound out here? Or maybe it was faulty somehow? I’m hoping other owners and reviewers chime in about it. I think this bike was brand new and just sent for me to review.

In terms of aftermarket Chargers you mentioned the Stromer does not provide the compact charger for North America and also hear you mention Europe has a 50% faster charger. I wonder if there are aftermarket Chargers? 6 amps is still extremely low wattage. You don't need to have more than a hundred fifteen volt to provide several times as much wattage. So it's confusing why both of the reviews I've watched today feature reduced choice in North America. I think some of the car chargers we're going to have a killer feature when they offer a bike Jack. Usually DC car chargers are expensive but the car part does not have to be DC to offer DC bike battery charging. I assume that some car maker has already provided a DC charging port for a Pro branded bicycle like Jeep is doing? The Jeep pickup has 120 volt female end extension cord by the gate in the bed. That's easy but what's needed is a high-speed universal cable for charging the major ebike batteries don't you agree Court?

I have to make room so I am deleting the full resolution downloaded videos and I just watch this entire video again and what sticks in my mind is your comment about the kickstand. The steering wheel AKA front wheel was the reason that you had to put a rock under the kickstand despite its maximum extension because you wanted it lined up with the frame for the video. This is what I remember from when I was a kid. You can struggle with a kickstand until you figure out that the front wheel has to be turning in the right direction for you to park the bike with the kickstand. It's not designed for a bicycle review videos active simulation LOL. Also in full resolution the video that precedes your demonstration of the shock so is the shock working better at least the rear shock. After the railroad ties I did have more time to observe the front shock and I might have been more impressed by the railroad ties if I had watched it at regular speed but that's the point about the Bobbsey went over prior to the railroad tracks they were farther apart and it's the first video I have seen the shock working on of yours because you do need to watch at high resolution to catch that. I also agree with you that noise is very critical and the Shimano has apparently set the new standard but today I read about the hubless bicycle and the comments are saying that the motor is in the rim which helps with regenerative braking but I don't know if that is just a commenter making up false nonsense that bicycle is going to be $2,000 for the crowdfunder. Of course it's not comparable to this bicycle it's faster and not for railroad tracks.

@ElectricBikeReview
@ElectricBikeReview 4 жыл бұрын
I was kind of surprised by the noise here. I’ve covered many CX models before, even the new 4th gen, and they usually are louder than average, but maybe with the software update to 85nm it further increased the volume on this one, or maybe it was faulty somehow? It’s a brand new demo mode that Trek sent just for me to review... so I assume it’s setup correctly.

wattage rating is complete bullshit, especially in europe. the manufactuters hid their bullshit rating by not telling the controller ampere rating. Dyno tests show that the cx motor puts out 550 of mechanical power at around 90rpm. That's not peak, that's continuous as long as you ride in turbo. obviously battery voltage loss during discharge will also lower power. probably, the motor takes up around 18A, but since the battery has a 20A limit it is very possible that it's also the controller's current rating. fully charged you get just below 800W battery power delivery @20A, but if the maximum mechanical power is 550W, the motor is pretty inefficient at that power level

Lets be honest, for 5999$ this bike absolutely sucks. For that cash I do not expect anythning less than Shimano XTR or Sram X0, brakes, shifters, front and rare drive, remote dropper seat, Manitou/Fox front suspension, what they put SR Suntour, is that a joke? SR SUNTOUR, for 6K$, really, hey trek folks, ease up on those mushrooms they are messing with your brains...
@ElectricBikeReview
@ElectricBikeReview 4 жыл бұрын
That’s an interesting point, the official website listed a RockShox fork but the bike actually came with an SE Suntour. Yeah, I prefer the Fox name, but Suntour has some good stuff at the high end these days. Perhaps it has to do with global supply chain shortages right now, or maybe the 27.5” XS and S come with the RockShox? And yes, the bike is on the expensive side in general, but still more affordable than some comparable products, like the Delite. I think the money goes into the drive system, custom frame and sizes, and the Trek dealer network so shops have margin to earn.
