I redesigned and modified my marvel cross cut pliers. Are these now the best side cutters around? They’ve helped me a heap as an electrician doing strip out at work.

Knipex 95 12 165 or 95 11 165, and Klein 63265. They’re 6 1/2” mini cable cutters that have enough of a point for wire ties. They’ll easily cut 4awg, and they’re small and light. You can easily just slide them in your back pocket if you don’t want to deal with a tool belt and only need a couple tools. I personally like the knipex ones since they have a screw instead of a rivet for the pivot. You can take them apart and easily sharpen them on a wetstone or a piece of sandpaper on a hard flat surface if you do something that dulls the cutting edge. They’re incredibly handy, and my personal favorite wire cutters since I got my first pair over a decade ago.

Hi mate great idea. FYI band saw blades are hardened steel and plier are hardened steel hence why you struggled with the band saw cutting. You can mainly only use friction cutting for cutting hardened steel. Keep up the Great work

Knipex does something similar in VDE, the 95 16 165 to be exact. Tip of the blades are pointed and usable for everything I might have used a diag cutter for.

Renegade Industrial 180mm Flush Cut Zip Tie Cutters - RIFCZ-7 great for tightening, flush cutting and removing cable ties,(even stainless ties). they even sell a smaller pair and the best part is you get to keep your pliers for the job they were designed for.

CK does really good cutters. Razor sharp. I use them also to slice, score and cut. Open all the way to end they become great to use as Stanley knife. Not 1000v insulated though. They can cut an armour cable up yo 6mm I think. Used them for years. If you carefully and take care of them they will last many years.

Marvel WATMA600 Diagonal cutters. That’s what I use in this situation and I cut a lot of cable ties. (I work in building switch rooms and constantly cutting ties under cable ladder under the sub)

Awesome man. I feel like you could make them even pointier if you cut some of the sides off as well. I'd prefer a little spring too so I'm not chopsticking all day but nice mod for sure.
@AddictedtoTools
@AddictedtoTools 2 жыл бұрын
I’m also thinking a bit more pointy. I do like the spring idea. Usually not great on pliers, but for what I’m doing. Could be a winner.
@Tool_Addicted_Carpenter
@Tool_Addicted_Carpenter 2 жыл бұрын
@@AddictedtoTools I feel that. Springs definitely aren't my favorite on pliers but I was just considering what you do and figured it might make sense. Maybe just some small metal dowels spot welded to receive the spring or even something simple like some nice super glue. Not really sure. Off to the drawing board lol

All the heat from the cutting disc will soften the steel, you can see the discolouration which means you let it get too hot.

@@AddictedtoTools when you cut them you should've had a constant water/coolant flow running over the pliers. Can't do too much with those ones now short of hardening them. It's probably more cost effective to cut another pair with coolant but that pair will do the job well for you. Love the idea!

I would say, hardening or heat treating it is not that hard to do for a DIYer with some common sense. Just need to find out the original rockwell hardness of the pliers. Owning or borrowing a testing kit might be a good way to find out. You can find plenty youtube videos about how to do that (so I won’t explain it here).

I'd buy it. I'm in the US trying to find the Marvel Crosscuts. I got them from Amazon about a year ago and recently lost them. Sucks they are no longer on Amazon for whatever reason. I have quite a collection of pliers. Non of which can take away the feeling of emptiness I've felt since I realized I lost the Marvels☺️.

There are special tools for removing zip ties that are specifically designed to prevent damaging the wires. They almost look like regular wire strippers but without the wire stripped notches in the jaws, and they have little beaks to protect the wires. And that’s my only concern with your custom tool. You left those ends very sharp so if you’re not careful you may damage the wires. I don’t think you’ll have issues with ruining the temper of the steel from abrasive cutting the jaws off, there’s some slight discoloration but It should hurt anything. I’d be more concerned if it started to rainbow and then glow red.

@@AddictedtoTools Pardon my OCD. Side cutters have a different geometry than diagonal cutters and I use both linesman side cutting pliers and diagonal cutting pliers for electrical work a lot so if I called them the reverse I'd get handed the wrong tool. Lol. Klein has a heavy duty 9" diagonal cutters that I use for cutting cable, zip ties, and also prying nails and staples. I also use them as a mini hammer at times. Nice modification, and I'm surprised how hard they were to cut into. Must be high quality. Cheers.
