I'm enjoying your videos. In cases like this where stuff is constantly being plugged in/out, I replace the receptacle (usually a cheapo residential grade) with a better built commercial grade one. Same goes in the kitchen.

Thanks for putting content on , one of the key elements is the commentary . My comment would be 1. You should move the items in front of any electrical before removing covers 2. You should finish up removal of upper right screw if your right handed 3. Test the proper rest of breaker to validate 4. Inspect breaker amps in reference to heater load applied and calculate compatibility 5. The reason for the browning on plug was from a loose connection ( stabbing of wires ) always wrap under screw for more surface connection. 6. Gfi protection required if plug changed at bath rm . Your lic . Would appreciate it. Thanks for your video 😊

Nice troubleshooting. Many homeowners don't realize how demanding a typical space heater is on a home's wiring system. Backstab connected receptacles in my experience are particularly problematic when heavy loads are carried over a long period due to the minimal contact surface between the wire and spring clip. What's more, is that a number of home's built or had circuits added from roughly 1964 through 1973 give or take a few years were wired in single strand aluminum for the general purpose lighting and receptacle circuits which expands and contracts at different rates with temperature changes than the terminals on devices which were made from steel, during this era causing loose connections.

Most residents don't know to reset a tripped circuit breaker, you must first switch to the off position first, then turn it back on. 💯👍

So true -) But I'm glad we use circuit breakers now. Many decades ago, when homes used fuses to provide overcurrent protection, frustrated homeowners unaware of the dangers, kept upping the fuse size till it held under an overload, sometimes at 30 amps on a 15 amp circuit. Or they might bypass the fuses altogether using a penny or stuffing aluminum foil behind the fuse. This was years before my time, but I believe one reason the industry went to circuit breakers is because the average homeowner is not going to change out a circuit breaker to a larger amp rating to prevent tripping like they would a fuse, forcing them to remove some loads or call for professional help. Some older breakers are just as dangerous if not more so, than fuses notably Federal Pacific Electric, and Zinsco but that's a topic for another day.

So, you just back stabbed the new outlet. I thought shepherd's hook was better. Please, teach me.

Better grade outlets have compression connections where you insert the wire in the back similar to back stabbing, but then you tighten the screw to clamp the wire. Those are fine. The cheap back stab outlets just have a metal piece inside that's supposed to hold the wire in place without a screw to clamp it. The contact area between that metal piece and the wire is very small. Over time, this can cause a bad connection, especially if high current loads like heating appliances are plugged in. I got a call several years ago where 3 bedrooms had no power. The owners daughter had accidentally shorted out the plug on her phone charger when a tiny chain from her bracelet fell across the prongs. All the connections at the outlets looked good. It wasn't until I pulled out the back stabbed white wire from the first outlet that I found the problem. There was a tiny groove burned in the wire where the metal piece for the back stab contacted the wire. If you didn't know how small the contact point was in a back stabbed outlet, you could easily overlook it. The wire wasn't loose either. At first, I thought that outlet was good and pulled out the other 3 outlets, checked the wire going to the breaker, and checked the breaker itself. Finally, I disconnected all wires from that outlet and found the problem.

Shouldn’t that new receptacle have to be GFCI type now that you replaced it

At the first outlet after breaker. They had one at the first location. This restroom was not the first one from breaker. Good question thank you

Uh oh the you tube police gone get you for not hooking those wires 😂😂

Yes indeed, but seriously all the research evidence and lab testing I have seen makes it clear the need for hooking and or using wire under plates and torquing them afterwards. Removes the possibility of a inadvertent high resistance point. The stab lock push ins are in my view just not good enough with limited contact point for a good stable long-term connection with the wire strain as well if the catch lever is not strong enough and you do get that on one or two things will loosen over time. It’s why if you look at the NEC2020 Handbook version they show the wrapping method with torquing. I also prefer to add a ideal armourband they are great avoiding any, very tiny risk of inadvertent shorting.

In that case a label “gfci protected device” should be applied to the face plate
