Thanks for the feedback :) The capacitor excites the windings, so it will affect the output. There is a 5% +/- so you can vary it between 15uf and 17uf. Hope this helps :)

You can only connect it one way and it work. If it isn't producing power shut down the machine and change them around. It will not harm the capacitor if you have put them on the wrong way at first. Hope this helps :)

Helpful information, thank you. I replaced a defective 16 uF cap. with a 20 uF. I had someone tell me the higher rating will effect the output voltage, and the frequency will be incorrect if I adjust my engine speed to compensate. That doesn't makes sense to me though, as the cap has nothing to do with the output itself. Correct?

hi generator guru thanks for handy tips .... tell me what cause the diodes to go bad on the rotar
@Generatorguru2 жыл бұрын
Hi! This is usually due to overloading the generator, or if you have a faulty piece of equipment attached that is faulty and arcing and therefore asking too much of the alternator. If it keeps happening with the same equipment on (and you use lots of different stuff on the generator) then def get that equipment tested. As to overloading, be sure that you try to only load the generator 2/3 of max watts unless it is a GENUINE "Honda Generator" (i.e. not just the engine but the whole generator) then they rate theirs at 2/3 power for you. This allows for surges when things like motors start. Whenever you start anything there is a surge, and if it has a motor like fridges, freezers, drills) it normally takes about double the running watts to start it. Other stuff takes less and they do not need to move anything, just excite their components. Please also be aware there are many generators being sold on selling sites and "side of road" sales that are mislabelled and a scam. They will do this by putting a model number like 8500w to make it look like they give out that amount, when in fact they only give our about 2.8kw. If you are suspicious as to what your generator gives out and it keeps blowing AVRs or Capacitors, please contact us on our website www.generatorguru.com and we will be happy to identify it for you. (Hint - these are mainly common in EU. Framed versions that have a 3 phase sockets and 3 x 240v plug sockets and often have "kraft" in their name. There are also Inverter versions that are sold as 2000w but have a capacitor under the side flap (i.e. not an inverter and built to only give out 750w). Please contact us for full info on these units. They can still be used at lower power, but there are safety things you need to know if they have a 3 phase socket!)

I’ve watched several videos about trouble shoot but most were avr which confused me, this is simple, relevant and took me straight to proving that my capacitor ‘which had burst open at the terminal end’ was fried, I crossed the terminal to make sure discharges then pulled it open and can see the melted insides and disconnected wire, it’s a Ducati 16uf on a Honda GX160 dont know who made alternator as plate missing, checked volts on the two wires with engine running as instructed and 6.7v so within tolerance I believe, is it better or worse to be 2v higher than lower or does it really not matter as long as it’s between 3&7v many thanks for your simple short video

Thanks for getting in touch. Replacing the capacitor should fix the issue. If the VAC output is a bit high it will might affect the longevity of the new capacitor. But.. if there are no surges on any equipment you attach, it should last for 100's (if not 1000's) of hours. ( We would also suggest you get an electrician to test what you last had plugged into the generator. Often it is faulty equipment that can cause this issue and make the capacitor overheat and blow.) We hold a whole range of generator capacitors on our website. www.generatorguru.com/capacitors/. :)

Going to get some cleaner and see if i caused the fail with the motor oil.. fingers crossed
@dandaman7042 жыл бұрын
I cleaned the oil off and still not making power. The 2 wires i disconnected from the capacitor are getting 4.99 vac with engine running
@Generatorguru2 жыл бұрын
Ah! Yes oil gets sprayed into the Alternator when you do that. You should always replace the bearing with enclosed bearings that do not need oiling. Common mistake, so don't feel bad. But quite bad news really if you used enough oil that it has sprayed itself over the alternator. Oil will keep spreading to 1 micron thick, and will cover everything and cause arcing when the alternator is run if it has made it way to any wiring. If the oil has spread - You need to take the Stator (windings) off to take to a Motor Rewind Company to clean for you. The reason for this is because they will use special solvent and will oven dry it before you use it again (both needed to prevent further arcing.) Replace bearing with correct type as well. If the oil has not spread - then it is probably a failure from the original bearing failing. 4.99v looks good but we need to get you to do more tests to see if there was any damage done. Please contact our engineers on generatorguru.com/need-help/ > Engineering Support > I Dont Know, with as much info as possible and we will be more than happy to help with the next tests.

None of us engineers here have heard of the Edilson Generator Capacitors so we are unable to comment on the quality or reliability. If your alternator has a Wiring Bridge for the windings you could run the tests in this video (minus the brushes) as this will test each leg individually. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qnTCfaWoj8iraZo If you need further assistance, we think it is best if you can submit a support ticket to contact our engineers direct, so we can send you more in-depth details on the next step, and dedicate an engineer to your query. www.generatorguru.com/ask-the-guru/

@engineeringdept.generatorg17606 жыл бұрын
As your results are showing a low voltage so we suggest you “Flash” your alternator. Follow the steps below: 1. To re-excite your alternator, we suggest you only use this method, as described by Generac Generators on KZbin: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y321Z2WpopyIibc 2. Run the generator for 20 minutes without load to stabilize the magnetic field in the Alternator. 3. Test with suitable appliance to make sure the load is stable. If not go to step 4. 4. Repeat our tests: www.generatorguru.com/help-me-fix-my-generator-repair-advice/ If results are below 1 Vac, repeat step 1. If this continues please contact us. If results are between 1-7 Vac, but you are not getting full voltage at the sockets, then you will need to replace your AVR/Capacitor. If results are above 8-10 Vac range, then you will need to replace your AVR/Capacitor. But be warned that the high reading will damage the AVR/Capacitor over time. This could result in it lasting a fraction of the time expected on a stable alternator. If results are above 10 Vac range, be sure you removed the AVR/Capacitor before testing. If you have and are receiving this result, we suggest you take your generator to a “Motor Rewind” company for repair. You can find your local Motor Rewinding company by doing a search on the internet for “Motor Rewind.” It is worth asking for a quote from a few Motor Rewind companies as their prices can vary greatly.

I operate a small portable concrete rig powered by a brushless generator. It consists of a 1hp motor (mixer) and a 1/2hp utility water pump . A pressure switch had been added to the water pump to prevent overheating/failure as water usage is intermittent . This worked fine for some years until the capacitor failed. Replaced and back to work . This new one also failed in 2 months time. I have 2 questions. First is could a water fitting leak cause the capacitor failure as it activates the water pump upon pressure loss ? This would increase the frequency of triggering the pump on/off for a few seconds as pressure recoupes. (Fitting to be corrected prior to capacitor replacement) . The second question is would adding an additional equivalent capacitor in parallel harm the generator ? The first failure was induced while using a 15amp breaker hammer with said water fitting leak (fyi). Thanks for any feedback.

Ok a lot to unpack there. We need to assign you to an engineer to run through the answers for you. But they need to know a bit more info: 1) What generator do you have? (if not sure what is the output on the label) If too small to account for the high surge getting the equipment running and keeping it going, will continuously blow the capacitor. 2) What are the amp readings on each piece of equipment you use on the generator, and what do you always use together? The amp ratings will be on a sticker somewhere on the equipment. 2) If water is leaking on the alternator, this can cause arcing and will blow capacitors and maybe more. Keep the alternator dry!!!! Once you got all this, copy and paste this thread and contact our engineers on generatorguru.com/need-help/ > Engineering Support > I Dont Know. We will assign you to an engineers who will be happy to work with you. FYI, we do not charge for advice. :)

Assuming your reading when running this test on the video were good. If it was sitting for over 6 months and produced power, then try flashing the alternator. @Generator Guru Hi , I have a generator but mine is Honda em25 (2.3kw, 220v) cycloconverter generator but I got it without electronics (module and front panel), just engine with flywheel (drum) and coils inside . Is there any ways to bypass all of that and make it run ? Just to make engine running , I don't need current . Or any modifications regarding , Thanks
@Generatorguru Жыл бұрын
Must admit, not an expert on that generator. But the engine looks like a normal setup. 1st you might want to remove the alternator to see if the crankshaft connection is any good for your new project. Generators 90%+ of the time use a tapered shaft which is only really found on generators and due to the shape make it very difficult to use for other purposes. If you need another crankshaft type you will need to replace the crankshaft (or see last suggestion.) If your happy with the crankshaft connection and it is manual start you could take the alternator and most wiring off and it will run happily. Be sure not to remove any wires from behind the flywheel as this will be to your ignition coil or that go into the engine, or attach to what goes into the engine. If electric start you will need to fit a key start unit (search the engine model, Honda and key start on search engine) and keep all wiring for the starter motor, battery charging rectifier (finned on back) and battery. ALTERNATIVELY - sell it on ebay as "spares and repairs" and you might make enough to buy a new engine with the correct crankshaft for your project. We sometimes get asked for engines for these and they seem like gold dust these days. Hope this helps! The Generator Guru Team

Based on your video, my alternator functions properly. I replaced my 12.0 microfarad, 350V capacitor with a 12.5 microfarad, 370V. I am still measuring ~2 Volts at my receptacle. Please help!
@Generatorguru10 жыл бұрын
It can be one of 3 things: 1. The capacitor has been wired backwards. With the engine off, switch the capacitor terminals the other way around and restart the generator. (If it is wired backwards it will not damage the capacitor if run for a short time.) 2. The engine is running a bit slow and not exciting the capacitor. To speed up slowly turn the screw on the top of the carb, this will adjust the amount of fuel, and the speed of the engine. Use your voltmeter to get to the right voltage. If this does not work switch the capacitor terminals again like in step 1. 3. The diodes in your alternator have blown, best to find a local motor rewind shop and see if they can replace them for you.

@Generatorguru10 жыл бұрын
So long as it is a Generator Capacitor and the volts and microfarad match (number followed by uf) then it should work perfectly. Attach the wires and start the engine, if it does not produce power stop the engine and change the terminals around. Hope this helps. If not feel free to contact us back. :)

Dear Sir/Madam, As your results are showing a low voltage, we suggest you “Flash” your alternator. 3. Test with a suitable appliance to make sure the load is stable. If not go to step 4. 4. Repeat our tests: www.generatorguru.com/help-me-fix-my-generator-repair-advice/ If results are below 2 Vac, repeat step 1. If this continues please contact us. If the results are between 2-7 Vac, but you are not getting full voltage at the sockets, then you will need to replace your AVR/Capacitor. Hi, I'm only getting 2 Vac from the wires going to my capacitor. BTW, my capacitor is a black rectangle. I assume that's the capacitor anyway.... Suggestions from this point ?
@Generatorguru5 жыл бұрын
Hi there We find 2V to be quite borderline, sometimes in these cases, fitting a new capacitor instantly restores the voltage, sometimes it can take a few minutes to get up to full output, sometimes replacing the capacitor doesn't restore the output and further work is needed, we really cannot say for sure

Hi there Did you run it a little while? Sometimes, the generator will re-excite itself gradually as you run it. If there is no change after 20 minutes or so, then follow the procedure in the video below To re-excite your alternator, we suggest you only use this method, as described by Generac Generators on KZbin: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y321Z2WpopyIibc

Hi there It is the microfarad rating that is most critical, the voltage is less of an issue. Polarity shouldn't be an issue but you can try reversing the terminals, it sometimes does resolve the problem, capacitors are peculiar and picky items

Since there's no AVR on a brushless, what might be done to increase the voltage output to 120V per leg so that my refrigeration compressors don't struggle? If this capacitor is out of tolerance, how does it affect the voltage? Larger capacitance makes lower or higher voltage?

That was actually pretty fast! Will do. Thanks. I've been advised on the Smokestack forum that increasing the size of the capacitor would increase the voltage. Could be mine got one of the caps that fell into the minus side of tolerance.
@Generatorguru8 жыл бұрын
DO NOT DO THIS! Your capacitor has been matched to suit the winding design and length. Increasing the capacitor will increase the voltage BUT it will also heat up the windings further than they are designed for. This will result in the varnish on the windings melting and resulting in the alternator arcing! You will damage the windings and they will either need replacing or rewinding (both are expensive!) Did you contact our engineers with the results from the test? Do not worry if a brushless unit we can still assit you. :) www.generatorguru.com/ask-the-guru/
@basspig8 жыл бұрын
That is an interesting point, but it IS a Chinese made genset and the voltage is too low for our enterprise UPS to consider it proper and keeps popping in and out of AVR Boost mode. Normal line is 122VAC and the genset puts out 111VAC at no load. The capacitors, based on the exploded view of the unit, are located in a metal box on top of the alternator. However, two of the screws that secure it are blocked by the electrical outlet panel on one side of the genset, so I have not been able to get in there. This is a new genset from Northern Tool, BTW. They won't do anything about it because it's within their loose 10% voltage tolerance. Anything between 108 and 132 volts is considered normal to them. But my a/c compressors and UPS don't like the low voltage.

It seems you Alternator has blown it's diode. If you take it to a Motor Rewind Shop, they should be able to fix it for you. The uf on your capacitor should be matched to the winding length and diameter of the wiring. These vary from design to design. It is always advisable to stay with the same uf. If you use another, it will change the power output and make it less stable.

Dear Will, As your Alternator has failed the tests, you need to contact a local “Motor Rewind Company” to see if they can fix it. These companies can vary in price, so if you have time, it is worth getting a few quotes. This is a much cheaper option than replacing the Alternator as the manufacturer charges over ½ the price of a new Generator and we would still need to get it shipped to you from China. Being so heavy, that would be very expensive and outweighs the economy of a new Alternator.

It can only be one of the 6 following faults: 1. The breaker has blown (replace with new) 2. The socket has blown or has loose wires. (replace with new or re-attach wires) 3. The voltage changeover switch has blown (only fitted on some brands, switches between 110/120v-220/240v) 4. There are 2 capacitors on your model and the other has blown (less common on generators after 1998) 5. There is a rectifier that has blown (only on some models. found at the end of the alternator and is a square inch in size with 4 terminals, and a bolt hole in the middle) 6. One of the 2 windings in your alternator has blown or shorted. (Take it to your local motor rewind shop to be rewound.) We would love to hear your results. If you have any other questions, we are always happy to help. :)
