The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is an American family of single-seat, single-engine, all-weather stealth multirole combat aircraft that is intended to perform both air superiority and strike missions. It is also able to provide electronic warfare and intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities. Lockheed Martin is the prime F-35 contractor, with principal partners Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems. The aircraft has three main variants: the conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) F-35A, the short take-off and vertical-landing (STOVL) F-35B, and the carrier-based (CV/CATOBAR) F-35C.
The aircraft descends from the Lockheed Martin X-35, which in 2001 beat the Boeing X-32 to win the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program. Its development is principally funded by the United States, with additional funding from program partner countries from NATO and close U.S. allies, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Italy, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and formerly Turkey. Several other countries have ordered, or are considering ordering, the aircraft. The program has drawn much scrutiny and criticism for its unprecedented size, complexity, ballooning costs, and much-delayed deliveries. The acquisition strategy of concurrent production of the aircraft while it was still in development and testing led to expensive design changes and retrofits.
The F-35 first flew in 2006 and entered service with the U.S. Marine Corps F-35B in July 2015, followed by the U.S. Air Force F-35A in August 2016 and the U.S. Navy F-35C in February 2019. The aircraft was first used in combat in 2018 by the Israeli Air Force. The U.S. plans to buy 2,456 F-35s through 2044, which will represent the bulk of the crewed tactical aviation of the U.S. Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps for several decades; the aircraft will be a cornerstone of NATO and U.S.-allied air power and is expected to operate until 2070.
The F-35 was the product of the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program, which was the merger of various combat aircraft programs from the 1980s and 1990s. One progenitor program was the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Advanced Short Take-Off/Vertical Landing (ASTOVL) which ran from 1983 to 1994; ASTOVL aimed to develop a Harrier Jump Jet replacement for the U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) and the U.K. Royal Navy. Under one of ASTOVL's classified programs, the Supersonic STOVL Fighter (SSF), Lockheed Skunk Works conducted research for a stealthy supersonic STOVL fighter intended for both U.S. Air Force (USAF) and USMC; a key technology explored was the shaft-driven lift fan (SDLF) system. Lockheed's concept was a single-engine canard delta aircraft weighing about 24,000 lb (11,000 kg) empty. ASTOVL was rechristened as the Common Affordable Lightweight Fighter (CALF) in 1993 and involved Lockheed, McDonnell Douglas, and Boeing.
In 1993, the Joint Advanced Strike Technology (JAST) program emerged following the cancellation of the USAF's Multi-Role Fighter (MRF) and U.S. Navy's (USN) Advanced Fighter-Attack (A/F-X) programs. MRF, a program for a relatively affordable F-16 replacement, was scaled back and delayed due to post-Cold War defense posture easing F-16 fleet usage and thus extending its service life as well as increasing budget pressure from the F-22 program. The A/F-X, initially known as the Advanced-Attack (A-X), began in 1991 as the USN's follow-on to the Advanced Tactical Aircraft (ATA) program for an A-6 replacement; the ATA's resulting A-12 Avenger II had been canceled due to technical problems and cost overruns in 1991. In the same year, the termination of the Naval Advanced Tactical Fighter (NATF), an offshoot of USAF's Advanced Tactical Fighter (ATF) program to replace the F-14, resulted in additional fighter capability being added to A-X, which was then renamed A/F-X. Amid increased budget pressure, the Department of Defense's (DoD) Bottom-Up Review (BUR) in September 1993 announced MRF's and A/F-X's cancellations, with applicable experience brought to the emerging JAST program.

For a while the Super Hornet lobby, in Canada, was so loud that those who believed in 5th Generation (The F-35a) could not get a word in edgewise. Then, thank God, Boeing shot itself in the foot. As of 2023 the F-35a is officially coming to Canada. Both NATO & NORAD will benefit from this.

You could feel the power of the engines and the agility is INSANE. Pilot, call sign Beo was the pilot of the aircraft and she was AMAZING. Experienced my first sonic boom when she did her high speed pass and she climbed a mile to THREE miles in SECONDS it is truly the future of air superiority. An experience I’ll never ever forget. @luffirton
@luffirton Жыл бұрын
@@danieldevito6380no comparing f-35 and f-22. F-22 is a air superiority fighter and F-35 is a multi role fighter. One cost’s $150m the other $78m for A, $110m for the B and $100 for the C. Need I say more. F-35 was meant to do many things well and still keep costs at a reasonable level. The F-22 was and is unsustainable to operate in large numbers. The F-35 is the replacement fighter for multiple fighter aircrafts that are the backbone of the air fighter capability of the Military and is the reason why it will always be inferior to the F-22, you don’t drive a super car to work every they, you only use it on Sundays but you use your high end pickup truck. Same goes for this the Military needed a high end workhorse and got it in the form of the F-35

Interesting to note is the evolution of this fighter. Just as a child isn't born with all the capabilities of an adult it takes years for the child to learn and become capable. The F-35 is just like a child in that respect. It takes years for the aircraft to become an adult. Just as it has taken years for this process to take place on other fighters. For example, the F-35 flew for almost 2 years before the techs even started to input rudder calculations.

The F-35 is a brilliant aircraft that keeps getting better. Now the best choice for NATO and with Canada's added purchase NORAD. The F-35 evolution will hopefully continue and the F-35a for Canada will vindicate those who have fought for her, while some politicians have worked against the best interests of the RCAF. The people who will defend Canadians are the most qualified to choose our aircraft, they have chosen the F-35a. What makes the F-35 the #1 aircraft of choice is the people who are determined for her to succeed. It is like no other aircraft in every way that counts.

Several countries that came in late were told no dice. Australia sent three different request to buy some F-22s along with the F-35s. The US still maintains its export ban on that. Many countries who long bought Soviet planes are now cancelling and trying to buy 4th generation fighters.

I was never a fan of the Harrier, having to clean up the mess they left behind more times that I care to count. The F35 was a major leap forward. The guys (Marines) who flew the Harriers took up half of it's lift capacity with their cajones in my opinion. They served their purpose back in the day but I've been happy to see them phased out by this machine. As impractical as it might be as applied to air combat and bombing roles, I'll always think of the F-4J's as the epitome of power and style. They'd never stand a chance against these modern machines of course but then again, the muscle cars of the 60's and early 70's evoke the same feeling and the same conclusionand they are still loved and a part of Americana. Good video, talk to your editor though ("Ground BRAKing?" LOL).

It takes extraordinary effort to keep the fleet operating even close to the required levels and the needed 'availability' rates are not sustainable long-term. By the end of the week of September 27, 2021, 52 F-35s sat idle because they didn’t have functioning engines. The problem is particularly horrid in the Air Force, since nearly all aircraft requiring an engine are F-35A variants. Service officials based plans on the promised performance rather than on the demonstrated performance and so underestimated the maintenance depot capacity they were going to need to repair broken engines. The unanticipated volume of work has overwhelmed the maintenance crews, and the backlog has grounded much of the fleet, including many aircraft being used in operational units. It takes more than twice as long as the program’s contract specifications to complete needed repairs= Constant issues, overly expensive, and unreliable.

"Jack of trades, master of none. But often better than master of one" People really know absolutely nothing about this aircraft (or this quote for that matter) The F-35 can, in fact, out maneuver the f-16. "...rumors were that the f-35 was a pig. The first time the oppents showed up... they had wing tanks along with a bunch of missiles. I guessed they figured that being in a dirty configuration wouldn't really matter and that they would still easily out maneuver us. By the end of the week... they had dropped their wing tanks, transitioned to a single centerline fuel tank and were still doing everything they could not to get gunned by us. A week later they stripped the jets clean of all external stores..." This is a quote from f-35 pilot "Ian Knight" on training exercises with the f-35 against the f-16. The F-35 also has one of the highest scores in the red flag exercises, and if I remember correctly, it is beaten only by the f-22. So please for the love of god,, before you go spit balling that stupid fucking quote, do some research beyond reading an article title listening to fakes like Pierre Sprey.

The F-35 had a rocky start which gave it an underwhelming reputation. But now I'm not so sure if that wasn't done on purpose by the US Military to sandbag, or hide its true capabilities from our enemies.. I still doubt that most ppl have any idea of what a true Masterpiece this fighter jet really is! The F-35 is destroying the competition in "Fly-offs" by our overseas allies who are looking to replace their current fleet of fighters, most of the time with scores like 20-30 kills to 0 or 1 losses, and that's why they're all choosing it even though it's a bit more money! Great video btw 👍✌

So.... if the camera system below it that allows them to see through the bottom of the airplane gets shot.... are they just blind? Or can they revert back to the tried and true method of using you're eye balls to look through the windows? Obviously you lose the ability to look down but, what about the rest? Does the augmented helmet become useless when one of the sensors get damaged?

I don’t believe so, they hopefully designed the aircraft like a escalator would function, you can stand still on it while it moves you to your destination or if it doesn’t work you can still use it as stairs. Hopefully that analogy is part of the development process of this aircraft.

When your pushing the limits of technology your bound to have issues, but like many other fighter programs before it, it wouldn’t be allowed to fly if it had dangerous and critical failures, and I am sure the ones that are crucial for the best operational capability are prioritized over time there will most likely be less and less bugs.

Even if the F35 can equal the A-10 in the Ground Support role (which it can't), the pilot's experience and training count for a lot in overall effectiveness. This makes specialization prudent, if not critical. The same for the Air Superiority role, though likely not as stark of a difference than Ground Support missions. Additionally, there are a number of truisms in peace and war, one of which is to not put all your eggs in one basket. If A-10's and helicopters work the Ground Support, dedicated bombers (stealth to huge missiles), it leaves the F35 to fill in as needed and free to handle any Air Superiority roles that become necessary. I'm a huge fan of the F35, but let's be smart - reducing single points of failure in favor of robust redundancy and flexibility.

I believe the Air Force will save the A-10 or order new aircrafts and continue it’s specialty pilot training, because like you say the training those airmen do is all about supporting the men and women on the ground and they do that being proud and with high efficiency

What Airframe Qualities makes the F-35, More Agile then the F-16??? It's a Simple Question, That Apparently A Lot of people, Don't want to get into Explaining Or All together Prefer to Avoid Answering, If the F-35 Has Truly more then enough Qualities, to out turn the Fighting Falcon, Then there shouldn't be a Problem To Upfront Explaining it??? Kind of odd that the VTOL capability was what won them the contract but of the three F-35 variants, the F-35b is the only on that has the VTOL ability. So many other elements are the real innovation to this plane... but I find it odd to already be calling it "One of America's most iconic aircraft." Lets see how it actually performs in combat in a few years first.
@apex_blue

That wasn’t the whole reason, however it did play a key role. Not only was the f-35 able to to take off vertically from a harder location they also managed to be to go supersonic in the same flight which neither the x-32 nor the harrier could do. Another thing is the intake the x-32 had exposed compressor fans.
@AA-xo9uw

STOVL not VTOL. There was no KPP requiring the JSF to be able to perform a vertical takeoff. The fact that the F-35B can is simply gravy. The X-35 was chosen over the X-32 for far more reasons than its ability to perform a vertical takeoff .
@paul123ggggggggg

lol dude, stovl was not nearly the only reason. and it has been used many times in combat already and has returned untouched back to their airfields before iran or syria even knows they have been attacked. considering ukraine is can still putting aircraft in the air against russian air defense, the russians nor anyone else stands a chance.

It is true that the alloy ah part of f35 is made in china?
@Dronescapes
@Dronescapes Жыл бұрын
It seems that all F-35 are made with a rare earth component that is sourced in China. Given the current ban on certain imports from China, it seems that a waiver was issued for the component. the component is in the engine (cobalt and samarium alloy). It is a magnet. Rare earth materials are not that rare per se, but they are very toxic to extract, therefore they are mostly found in countries where rules and regulations allow to handle them. Let's just say that the rest of the world accepts the fact that in order to get those materials, they need to ignore the fact that there are heavy consequences for people working around them. rare earth materials are a serious problem, as there is an increasing monopoly given the fact that you need to ignore basic human rights and health in order to get it. We are a world of many compromises, but we all want, need and use those materials, not only Honeywell (engine). iPhones, for example, have those materials, but Apple is introducing a program to re-use them (up to 45% I think). We all turn a blind eye on those components, one way or another.

F15 has an awesome trust to weight ratio and can climb vertical and accelerate. The power in the enginges with afterburners are stronger than gravity. F22 also have that kind of trust to weight ratio and can also climb vertical and accelerate. Something very important for a fighter for air superiority. F16 and F35 cant climb vertical and accelerate, they both loose speed since their single engines are not strong enogh. F16 and F35 are fighter bombers with limited air to air capability. F35 is not for air superiority!! F15 and F22 are.
