Owning a service engineering business on the west coast of Ireland, until I retired, these would have been the perfect vans. Most days Our vans would do maybe 80-100 miles with the odd day doing 140 and maybe a couple of time a year 190 so I believe this is the perfect van. The Mercedes van, frankly is a total waste of time far to little range for comfort. As I was VAT registered I’d reclaim VAT. We bought all our vans on a lease purchase arrangement so the monthly payment wouldn’t be that much more than an ICE van and was set against tax. The fuel, service and repair savings would easily out way the cheaper diesel van, for me it’s a no brainer.

Hey Colin, good insight. You should get one for your retirement. I'm in a similar situation business wise. I'm on the south coast and travel as far as Belfast and Newry as well as all parts of Ireland. It's a no brainer for me too. All I want is a network of fast chargers (100Kw) and smart charging V2G at home/work.

I've done Amazon van delivery in the central belt of Scotland, that van would be perfect as a usual days milage would be 100-120 miles. One of the things I found most tiring about the job was the constant jerking motion of stop start changing gear and vibration, it kills your back and left leg which then get hammered running up tenement stairs 8 hours a day. I hear that Amazon are building a new warehouse near Glasgow this year with a bunch of EV van charging points, which will I'm sure be a nod to the environmental conference thats happening. Knowing EVs and vans I can say that it's a no brainer, but that will hold no water with your one man and van. The real impact will be delivery agencies that work for Amazon making people drive electric because it's cheaper, the drivers will moan and spit about it, but they will be singing praise after one week. And then all those ex agency vans will hit the second hand market, just in time for the bloke down the pub to see the sense in an electric van.

When I was multi-dropping for a courier firm, I would cover about 120 miles per day. The interior mirror is a one-size-fits-all thing, for the open-backed - (no steel plate), or the flat-back vans that have a window behind the seat. That van, of course was a manual shift - and once, bored out of my mind, I counted how many gear-shifts I did in a one-day trip, I lost count at over 2000!

Thanks for the review - it looks like a step in the right direction, but.... You mentioned that the 75kWh battery is about £6k more than the 50kWh. That gives a price of £240/kWh. Given that Tesla's battery costs are believed to be under £100/kWh, either PSA have got major issues with their costs or they're ripping customers off. That would suggest the battery pack in the base model costs £12k or of the £25k purchase price; at Tesla prices you could reduce that by £7k. And that nadger hazard of a gear selector; I can see why it's there for a conventional gearbox. It's a shame they couldn't do a different version of the dash for the EV version - better packaging would give an extra incentive to buy. Keep up the good work.

Electric camper van makes allot of sense since if using camp sites, most of them have electric hookup.

campsite electric supplies typically have limited output, sometimes as low as 10 amps, so at best you could only charge with a granny lead and there would be no spare capacity for electric accessories (kettle, cooker etc within the van) so fast charging on the route would be the answer.

@@jeta1f35 - Many campers park-up for 2days to a week. Then walk/climb/frequent the pubs of the local area. And only occasionally venture out in the van. For those hours when they’re away from the van, why not leave it on a trickle charge and the next time they’re out and left the van, trickle it again. Rapid charge it when you can, fast charge when you need to; and trickle charge it when there’s the opportunity, (providing the site hasn’t got exorbitant hookup fees). But you’d know how much, before plugging in.

@@jeta1f35 even if you never to set the EVSE to 6A, you will still be able to use power in the van. You have a large battery you can as a buffer. The 12 V battery is charged from the high voltage battery. So you get a constant supply of power.

hi , i'm a multi-drop driver based in/around Edinburgh .. i average 1000miles a week , my 3.5 ton diesel van averages 30-35 mpg .. so this would easily handle the days im' in town centre ( usually 100-130 miles ) .. would struggle in my twice weekly run to Aberdeen

If you can charge at home on a 5p tariff, and can live with a 30-40 minute charge on your Aberdeen trips, would save a ton on fuel.

1000 miles a week 35 MPG and Diesel at £1.20 is £155 a week (1000 / 35 * 4.54 * 1.20). At worst case 2 miles / kWh and best case Octopus overnight tariff of 5p that is £25 a week (1000 / 2 * 0.05) which is a saving of about £520 a month - which sits well next to the extra finance cost :) Lower service cost, brakes might well last 100,000 miles, and so on. Lower depreciation / better final-value too. Can't help you with the static time charging on your Aberdeen days unless you have something you can do at that time - emails that you would normally do when you got home? If so then maybe you could consider that is just time-shifted.

I have a LWB Vivaro-E. We’ve covered 4K miles since mid February together. Rapid charged 5 times due to needing to do a bit extra distance, cover around 130 - 140 miles a day on rural A and B roads. Once the weather warms up, I’ll expect more range. It’s perfect for me.

Lots of really useful information here and good to see that at last there is a van available for serious use. My 1 disappointment with your review was the lack of information about the maximum weight that this beast can lug around. My company currentlyuses the smaller diesel Berlingo van with 850kg payload but they are now a few years old and replacements will be needed soon. As we are a printing company our vans carry mainly paper, this is a really dense material and means we always reach the vans weight carrying capacity way before we fill the volume.

You should review the Maxus eDeliver 3, the first ground up EV van available in uk, a lot cheaper, more range (213 miles WLTP City- the 52.5kwh), and CCS. Fastest 0-30mph I’ve ever done in a van. The test drive immediately made me change my mind from a diesel van, just ordered one !

You could indeed have a colossal battery but unfortunately that would come at a colossal price! That's the big challenge for camper van usage because the battery capacity is the most expensive aspect. Working vans with a daily predictable mileage are a much easier to judge. The cost effective approach (for working van) is actually to buy a vehicle with the smallest capacity battery that meets your needs rather than driving around with a larger expensive batter that's not used to its capacity very often.

Have to agree about the gear selector. I'm not a fan of toggles and push buttons for gear selectors. Citroen have a steering wheel stalk on their automatic C4 Picasso so why not have the same on the van? Keeps it out of the way of the centre passenger and doesn't need you to look down to see what you selected.

Rear view mirrors houses some sensors for automatic lights and rain or radar on some vehicles. This isn't just PSA saving costs. My VW T6 has it too despite a bulkhead. Can't see why they couldn't just make a small slim box or remove the mirror section. PSA leccy van sounds excellent, waiting for the ID Buzz Cargo however. 300bhp. My next race van.

I think a rearview mirror may be a requirement for registration, even if it’s totally non-functional. Plus if you can’t see behind you, rear iew cameras should be compulsory. Especially on a van. Too many children die or are seriously injured in vehicles with restricted visibility when reversing.

Good van review, if you include these items it would be a great review, in the storage area will a euro pallet or uk pallet slide between the wheel arches, max height of an item being slid in past the rear doors, does the vehicle have access doors on both sides or only one and can a pallet be removed from the side access doors, you might need to take your tape measure on the next review….😍..🚚

Hi Joiner here with some questions. I have the diesel version of this van and my manager has offered me the opportunity to switch to the e-dispatch. How nippy is this off the mark? Does the e version still have the volume control on its own stork on the right of the steering wheel underneath the indicator? Volume controls on the steering wheel just aren’t as easy to reach. I'm an electrician who travels between Bedford, Cambridge & NW London. I average 600-650 miles a week and have had my eye on the 75KW Vivaro-e for a little while now. The 50KW may be suitable, but I feel the larger battery would completely remove any range anxiety (now confirmed by your estimations). Hoping to be able to place an order through our fleet company in the next couple of months.

Bigger battery also helps when you do have to fast-charge - you go further before having to charge, so need to charge less to reach destination :) Larger battery may charge faster too

It's worth stretching to the bigger battery on that mileage IMHO. Remember you are never running from 100% to 0% and you get poorer miles in cold winter. (I'm an EV owner and highly recommend the transition but you have to be realistic.)

Most delivery drivers need to know if you can get two 40 inch x 48 inch pallets in at the back. A lot of times the hump where the back wheels are, make it tight to get them in without damaging goods.

Generally, all vans are designed in such a way that they can accept Europallete (1200mm by 800mm by 144mm). Even smaller vans have something like 1258mm between the arches.

Euro pallets are smaller, standard pallets are bigger. Having worked in despatch, you had to specify the size of pallets else couriers would send a van and you would not be able to fit pallets on.

So, £250 more expensive per month. Lets suppose £90 to fill from empty with 75 litres of diesel, that will take you 500 miles (30mpg in 2nd gear at 30 like the man that went by) and as you said 10% of the price for electric (if you can keep to home charging). Save £81 per fill up, so 3 fills from empty per month equals the additional cost. So if yo do 1,500 miles per month, or about 75 miles a day for 20 working days per month, the electric is cheaper. 75 miles is half the real world range of the £25k version so, a tradesman doing 100 miles per day would be in the money!

I'm a water treatment engineer current van is a Renault traffic drive fully loaded all the time average daily usage 150 miles a day up & down motorways into Leeds , Liverpool & Manchester . Big issue would be charging as it's a company van so if I charge at my house over night who pays? I'm out 7am to 6pm most days and eat lunch on the go or parked on a street or customer site so charging every day during working hours would be a pain without good charging network. As I currently fill up with diesel 1-2 times a week for 500 miles of range.

A lot of home chargers will tell you exactly what you've spent if you need work to pay. British Gas are giving the Vivaro E (the same van) to their drivers and I'm sure their staff aren't paying for their own charging. As for charging on the go. If you're doing lots of motorway journeys then it shouldn't be an issue - there are rapid chargers at every service station. A full battery in the morning + a 20 min top up will give you 200miles (with the bigger battery) and that's in the worst conditions.

Van is on a 2 year service life as well so cost less than £100 a year to service the diesel van. Tyres still fine at 30k miles.

Std is 7 kw charging, 3 phase is an option. The pack is cooled and heated and accepts 100 kw dc fast charging as std. Most will charge over night on a 5p rate. Think a video explaining the options an cost is needed.

Like yourself I drive a model sr + but with NO home charging , but work round the charging problems. My day job is a service engineer for a large boiler manufacturers driving a transit custom high top permently loaded with spare parts. I drive anywhere between 60 and 150 miles a day in " fast as you can " mode this type of van would almost fit the bill, as you said except for the cost and availability of rapid chargers.

Prices are crazy. 25kwh difference in battery size for 7 grand works out at about £280 per kWh at a time when $100 per kWh has been achieved from a manufacturing point of view. they aren't serious about moving electric models yet as they want to recoup the R&D costs for the petrol/diesel models. just dropped a load hitting euro6 regs too.

One problem with vans is that charging spaces are not always that long and a 6.5m van would have its rear hanging out in traffic. Charging spaces will need to lengthen if more vans go electric. And I can’t imagine where big 7m+ Motorhomes will charge while on holiday. But things will change, I guess.

Electric camper van would be awsome. I'd love a camper van but the fact that I'd rarely use it makes it hard to justify. Having an electric one with far less costs involved like servicing and tax etc would be good, and I'd probably use it more anyway because it would be cheap to run.

Maybe the rear view is for other markets where the steel bulkhead doesn't exist, not required unlike UK, so they just left it there rather than remove it. I could see if it had a 90kWh or even 100kWh pack and they built it as a campervan style could be great for touring around the UK & Europe with possibly even other countries if the charging infrastructure was in place for it. But why only a 7kW AC onboard why not a 11kW as the Van driver, that van needed to be white so it fit in with the Top Gear White Van Man challenge :) , can plug it in for 30min on a 22kW plug and get a decent amount back while away having lunch.

Does it have a heat pump for the heater? I Already own a Peugeot Expert (1997) so I'm in line for a new one about now. I wish they'd go that bit further up to 90-100kwh so it really would do a reliable 200+ miles and have some left to run the camper (fridge, cooker, gadgets and heater), but that's too expensive for most people. This 75kWh is certainly useable if you mostly go to campsites. Still a bit limiting for off-grid usage.

I own the 2ltr version and £250 difference would get 42 gallons of diesel so at least 1300 miles. A load of 300 to 500kg, will the electric version do that? I often do 200 miles one way at least 3 times a month so that's 3 fast charges. What do Citroen say about fast charging the battery as I'm sure the van logs it? My van is 2 years old on 0% finance withe the option to buy in a year. Good idea but it needs to have a range of 300 miles as in the winter this will reduce.

AC power plug in the rear? I wonder what % of the battery it would consume running the Air overnight? Possible to run the Air while parked and charging? Possible to get some power into the battery with 500 Watt 48v solar on the roof?

From my own experience many (most?) EVs need a solid 1.4kW at 230v before they take charge I'm afraid. (Vehicles with rapid charging like this one do also charge on DC ... but that has to be at hundreds of volts.)

Additional drag of roof mounted equipment would ruin the range I think. Until they can quote 400 mile real world figures, it won't serve most of the service industry.

The extra drag at speed would be noticeable but need a back to back test to get the result. But if you need the ladders then you need them and live with it. At low speed it’s inertia that causes the loss, so for most it would be ok.

Good question. It's not going to be advisable to routinely run the van from 100% to zero so you need a real daily working range ... maybe 90% to 10% .... so maybe knock 20% off the quoted range figures.

Hi What’s your thoughts on an electric van for a window cleaner? I have a 500L tank for water fed pole window cleaning so there’s excess water on the floor of the van. There’s also inlet and outlet pipes through the floor near the rear of the van. I’m concerned it could damage the batteries. Appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks, Dave

It is not the range that is so important once you get over 140 miles and a bit, it is the torque. A fully loaded van is a bugger with a diesel engine. I don't know how much weight those vans carry but, three and a half tons in an electric van should be much better to drive than a diesel.
