I've always slightly disagreed with EV Man on this, which is fine each to their own. But I charge every day as I have two EVs and I find untethered no less convenient. In fact, I prefer not having to wind up the cable - I just quickly unplug both ends and chuck in my car boot 🙂

We had a Zappi 2 cable less version over a year ago, As wife's plug in Hybrid is type one and the rest is type two. Yes we bought a extra cable for about £160 so that we had a cable in the Zappi2 and one in the car. It also has the option of locking the cable in. Depending upon which setting you have it on, it will take from the house battery's and/or the solar system. Free fuel ⛽ Very pleased with it and would recommend.

I have the Easee charger - one nice rhing with unthethered is you may easily change the cable if it's broken, and it's possible to support both Type 2 and Type 1 vehicles.

We have a tethered charger which my wife uses for her PHEV, it has a 5m cable and that's just about long enough to reach around to the charge port. Having the cable there is very convenient. We are planning to get a Zappi to use with the solar PV we will be installing, that will need to be untethered so we can have a longer cable. So it's horses for courses. This discussion video was very useful

I had a 5m cable on my tethered PodPoint. Had it (cable) replaced with a 10m cable so it is still possible for you to use a tethered. The electrician just used a type 2 to type 2 untethered cable and took the plug off. It would be possible to use a longer cable. All I fitted was a karcher garden hose reel holder on the wall to support the longer cable.

@@bill_heywood I cannot really see why if it is fitted correctly. Obviously the new cable would not be covered by the Zappi warranty. It would be akin to fitting a tow bar to a car. If fitted correctly, the car is still warranted.

I'd recommend tethered. We mainly charge at home and it is definitely quicker and keeps the boot clean. We opted to install our charger in the middle of the driveway behind the chimney so it's out of sight and also quick when switching cars to charge

Having just moved over to an ev and home charger I went for the untethered and a 10m lead which I leave in the garage. The 10m lead gives me more flexibility with other cars on the drive and the location of the charger - I have the charger in a much more convenient location and closer to the service head, rather than halfway down the driveway (which needed extra work to install and hide the supply cable).

I went untethered as the wifey refused to reverse the car in :) Also my 2nd EV will be across the drive. Most provided cables are 3-5 m and I needed a 10m for the Zappi. When not in use it is secure in the garage on its own hook, it would never sit outside tempting a would be "scrap man" :)

I got a free BP Pulse charger with our last car (EQC), and got untethered fitted. This was because I wanted (much) better control over charging - and bought an Ohme smart cable (at a discount through Octopus). If you get offered a free or heavily discounted charger as an offer with your new car, which will probably have quite limited control options (i.e. Control when the charger operates), it's worth considering an Ohme cable.

I installed the original Zappi v1 Tethered Type 1 when I had a Mitsibushi Outlander PHEV. Then when I upgraded the Outlander to the 64kWh Kia Soul EV which is Type 2, I considered changeing the tethered cable to a Type 2, but instead bought a type 1 to type 2 adaptor which works brilliantly and was a lot cheaper than paying an electrican to replace the cable. Bonus feature is that I managed to persuade my wife to replace her petrol car with a Nissan Leaf, so she can charge using the original type 1 cable and I use the adaptor for my charging.

I went untethered for a long cable. Charger in garage (prefer it being inside out of the weather) but needed to reach past trailer. Treat it as tethered, car end is parked on a fence post. Meant I was able to get a Zappi with a Tesla button on the end of the cable.

Nice to meet you boys at FoS the other week. We went with an untethered Zappi. It was great for a couple of weeks but I soon discovered it was a total ball-ache digging the cable out of the boot in the rain, so bought an extra (10M) cable to keep in the car. So, the unterhered zappi is now pseudo-tethered as we leave the Kia cable in there all the time now and keep the longer one for when we're not at home and have to charge. We ended up spending more money but the 10M cable is a dream when a charging station has been ICEd.

The Zappi V2 manual says that with an untethered unit, the charging cable should be unplugged and stored in a cool dry place when not in use. It doesn't say why, but I presume there's a reason the author bothered to include this.

@@nigelgarvey2046 Indeed, however, I contacted MyEnergi to ask if it would be possible to change the front of the unit to make it tethered as I was finding it inconvenient the way it was. They said it wasn't that simple as there were other differences between the tethered and untethered units so it would really need to be a full replacement, but they did say they could sell me a wall guard if I wanted to leave a lead plugged in. I took them up on their offer. £10 for the wall guard if memory serves me correctly.

Another important consideration you forgot to mention is do you have solar or are you thinking of getting solar? I went for a myenergi Zappi tethered charger because even though I don't have solar yet, I do want to get solar and battery storage at some point; so I can charge my car from my own generated energy.

We went tethered podpoint, ordered after we got the car. ( We were granny charging for a few weeks. ) Never regretted it, very convenient. The location is under the eaves of the house and doesn't get much weather. Cable still looks like new after a year of use.

I have tethered. Having used public untethered chargers, I would never want to go with untethered. Coiling the cable up and putting it tidy in the bag in the boot is just a huge hassle and not fun at all when it is pissing it down with rain.

Anderson charger was my wife’s choice. Smart and takes from solar etc. tethered but hides the cable within the unit. Not cheap but very nice to look at.

Went for a Ohme ePod as I can’t stand the aesthetics of what looks like a garden hose hanging off the front of my property and I don’t find any issues with connecting my cable to the charge point.

The only reasin I slightly regret tethered (that was free with my Zoe) is that you can buy cables with a Tesla cable release button now I'm a big boy with a Model 3 :)

Nice overview. discussion brings out points I might not have thought of. I've got a type 1 eNV so I went untethered (I may upgrade the car soon). As obvious on Harry's wall there isn't really room for a long tethered which was another factor for me. I was lucky enough to get hold of a second type1 cable so I keep one in the car and one in the porch. (Wet cables in the car cause more condensation). One point which might warrant noting is the imminent change over to smart charge points, Sadly mine is a dumb unit so I'll have to upgrade anyway to get into car-to-load. I don't know if anyone does a replacement type2 end, but I guess there will be quite a market for converters.

Back in the days of Type 1 & Type 2 I went untethered as Id be changing cars from T1 to T2 later. Nowadays theres no point. I take the point about neatness though, Harry's does look better than with cables and better than what mine would look like if on the outside of my house. That strikes me as a good reason to go untethered. Mine is in a garage* so it doesn't matter and maybe Harry could have had his installed just inside the garage and route the cable? Though that then involves lifting the garage door but OTOH then there's nothing outside the house at all. *the cable is long enough to charge the car either in the garage or outside it , cable goes under the garage door in that case.

Tethered. If you need a longer cable,or a different plug, buy a new longer / different untethered lead and get an electrician to take off the plug (that would fit into the untethered unit) and wire it into the charge point. At home, tethered is much more convenient.

As far as I know the Zappi can lock the cable in too. But my wife said that thing will never ever sit at the front of my house. The Andersen A2 with a long cable for future proofing however... So now we've had a tethered and stylish charger at the front of our house for two years. I much rather have the type2 stored away in a good place in the car, always. Because when you need it, you need it! And don't have to dig out and stow a grubby cable in the car all the time.

Did you go for the standard 7.4kW charger as opposed to 22kW? Aside from running a higher capacity cable to the fuse box are there any issues with installing more powerful chargers? Do most fuse boxes only support a limited number of high current devices (oven, electric shower, car charger) ? Can you use them all at once? Are phases an issue?

The Easee One is technically both a tethered and untethered EVSE, in the app you can configure whether the cable is always locked or whether it unlocks after a charging session. I wanted a tethered unit but went with the Easee as it has built in PEN fault protection and effectively use it as a tethered unit, on the unit connected to our Tesla I could then buy a cable with the built in Tesla hatch open button.

Regarding cable length, my Podpoint comes with 5m as standard, or an opinion of 7.5m. I went for the latter as this way I can charge the Leaf whether I drive or reverse onto my drive. Longer cable lengths weren't offered by others suppliers at the time. Plus, there's a bit of future proofing as who knows what their next ev will be?

Interesting video. I don't think I have ever seen an untethered EV charger cable in the US. I have a tethered Tesla charger that I got from Tesla for someone people using my reference link. Untethered would make sense in some public places since copper sells for a high price and people have been known to cut the cables from chargers for the metal.

My charger is technically tethered. "Technically", because the charger (or, using correct term, EVSE, since AC charger is built into the car) itself is plugged into 3-phase socket. So I can take it with me on holiday. Also, mains cable can be swapped for standard Schuko plug. I do feel sorry for older (or imported from US) EV guests though - if their car does not accept 3-phase, they are stuck with 3KW.

We have an untethered charger, because our cars require different connectors. However, we almost never use it because our Garage has a 32A total supply. If we use it, we cannot charge both cars, so we mostly charge both cars on 3 pin mains adaptors. This is fine, because adding 10 miles of range per hour typically adds 120+ miles of range over night to both cars. If we do a long journey in one of the cars we will charge this on the 32A charge port at 30 miles of range per hour meaning it can be fully charged overnight. From experience we almost never need the 32A charger.

Many untethered chargers would still have a place to wrap the cable around. Its just more flexibility. Need convenience ? Then just leave it plugged in, but flexibility is what matters, can change the cable it damages or rusts. Or get a longer or shorter cable as required. Similar to how phone chargers have. Adapters can last forever, cables dont.

I got a tethered Zappi V2 with 7m cable. Makes parking more easy. Cable always need to be on top in the boot. So not much use of those under bottom cable storage. In practice that isn't the way to put it.

3:24 I have en Easee wall box too, but I have an 10 m type2 cable locked to it 4:36 - if I have visitors with type1 car, they can easily plug their cable. - I can easily switch the cable if there's damage to it. - I can easily unplug to bring 10 m cable when I go on a trip, where someone possibly blocked the charging spot.

For my untethered wall box I got an all black cable, not a colourful flash one. Normally 3 m would do, but I went with 10m, to cover more of my driveway. I have a hook over my charger, an usually there are 3 loops on it, with the box inside. Sometimes I park with my trailer attached then I might leave half a loop on the hook. If the forecast is snowy during winter, I might want to park at the front of my driveway, to have a shorter path to clean to get out in the morning. I think you are exaggerating the potential of theves breaking loos a type 2 cable, compared to them cutting a tethered cable for copper.

I have a question please. i get you say in many of your vlogs its better to charge ev at night at home for cheaper electric but what happens if i have solar on my house without battery as surely better then to charge in the day when the sun is out. i got my solar panels before the government capped the FIT so i get great yearly return payment from the sun. Hi. I live in a ground floor flat and I'm trying to get permission from the freeholder to install an EV charger. The alternative is to install a small EV charger indoors and run the cable out of the window to the car. Have you ever heard of someone doing that or if it's even doable?

My terraced house has no off road space, opening directly onto the residential road and pavement. Under these circumstances the threat from vandals and cable croppers is real. Fortunately I only need to charge from the domestic supply once a week which is fortunate as the roadside is not reserved parking. Not being assured access to my own front of house has led me to choose UNTETHERED, flexibility of cable length and relative security being determining factors. I am in need of a good cable gully across the pavement (approx 2Mtr) but at the time of writing can only find them as included with charger type deals.

My Garo charger is untethered, but it might as well be tethered as I seldom bring the cable with me. Most of my journeys are long ones 200+ km & If I need to charge I use CCS DC chargers. I have never suffered from range anxiety!

I'd make a charge point with a lid that hides the cables connecter in the charge point, and an identical tethered chargepoint. Its a tiny design thing that costs a bit of plastic for the casing making it absolutely unable to tell what is what without going to try to open a locked lid to tell what model it is.

At some point you could cover the pros and cons of adding your charger to the several vendors of public available chargers and selling your electric. I know the Easee One is (or will be) capable of this, I have one myself. Also a benefit of having it installed outside, or should that be outstalled.

We've had an essay one just fitted, courtesy of Motability, we were asked if we wanted Tethered or untethered . Thinking of the hassle of getting the cable out of the boot, it'd need to be tethered. So come fitting day we get the essay one and and a separate essay 7.5m cable. Cars due in around 6 month so for now its a smallish unit mounted at the front of the garage. Cables sat in a bag inside for a while yet...

Another reason why people don't steal home/slow charges: once you have charged your EV you can't get the chemical energy out (except by driving the car of course) ... not like you can siphon it out and put it in your mates' car. So that is the other ceiling on what you can actually steal.

I'm sorry, but Harry's charger is not well installed. It's not quite in the centre of the wall, and that would annoy me forever, I'd probably have to sell the house! Regarding that charger, I believe it's the one that has interchangeable face plates, so it can be upgraded to tethered?

I think, given the current new crime spree of cutting cables to get cash for copper, it is best to buy untethered as long as the charger unit and your car can lock the cables whilst charging and only unlock via a card or app security

Silly eejit me didn’t lock the car properly one night and some w*cough*r must have been goin round trying doors,, got lucky with mine and was off with my type 2 out the boot 😡. Managed to replace it cheap on gumtree for under £50. Don’t think the chargepoint really draws attention as it’s hidden behind a locked gate.

7 KW on a spare 30 amp spur. Same supply as a Cooker or a power shower. Full charge in 6 hours .

I was quoted £1700 to fit the charger so I didn’t think the extra 3 or 4 kws was worth it. If I ever charged from home on the granny lead it was a constant 2kw

Electricity is even cheaper for us (although it went up from $0.07 to $0.12 per kWh), but if a person needed a charge to get to a charger (much less common now, if everything is functional), I'd rather share than a person get towed or a close call (again, should never happen, but people are human)

The only situation I could think of would be a neighbour who is close enough to park in their driveway and use your charger. Still very unlikely, but people have done stuff like that before, there was a news article a couple of months ago about someone being caught stealing their electricity supply with their own DIY electrical work through a shared wall while the house was unoccupied (I think something like the old tenants had moved out and the new ones hadn't moved in yet).

The other option is the evse charger level 1 and 2 with the adapter plug. The new Chevrolet Bolt EV/EUV comes with such a level 1 cord change the adapter plug to nema 14-50 and it is a level 2 7.7 kW. People them just get a home Nema 14-50 plug installed. This is in North America.

The UK has a different approach. Your main options are 'granny chargers' that plug into a household socket, 'commando' sockets which are similar to your nema 14-50s and then hardwired. Granny chargers aren't advisable as drawing 10A @240V for hours at a time from a household socket can cause overheating. Commando and hardwired both need earth fault detection and an RCBO for earth leakage detection. It's a bit easier to hardwire than add a socket in the chain so that's the way we usually go.

Untethered. Tidy, neat, cables always dry and clean in my boot. I have the choice to lock it to the charger but what's the point? Can also lock the charger so if anyone's tempted to try and use it when I'm not around they ain't going to get far.

@@ThePrawlin no, as mentioned elsewhere, you can't. Other chargers do not do exactly what Easee One does. Trust me, as the marketing manager at an installer, they would be telling me because this is one of the Easee's claimed USPs. So if other products dis this, they would be saying so. Indeed, some other chargers "lock" to prevent unwanted use by others but they don't mechanically lock the cable into place into the charge point socket even when the car is unplugged and there is no charge occurring.

@@dmorgsev Well maybe I’m misunderstanding something here about Easee.. AFAIK there is a setting in the Zappi untethered menus to lock the socket solenoid so the lead can’t be pulled out. I must admit I have the tethered Zappi so I can’t absolutely prove it but I recall reading about it in the Zappi beta testers forum.

@@dmorgsev I know nothing about Easee, however even if it optionally locks the cable in place, in my books that certainly does not magically make it into a proper tethered EVSE. It still needs a plug in lead adding? Give me a proper permanently tethered EVSE any day 😂.

The Easee One, as they mention in the video, does both. All Harry needs to do if he wants tethered is plug a cable in and lock it via the app and voila it becomes tethered.

As I suspected, the Zappi does not offer tethered and untethered in a singular unit. I didn't think it did but double checked after your comment and cannot find a single reference to this. So in short, the Easee One IS unique in this regard. Harry didn't choose untethered because there is no tethered or untethered option for Easee One. It does both in a single unit.

@@dmorgsev jeeez, I never said Zappi untethered can become tethered! All I’m saying is that you can lock the type 2 plug into the untethered Zappi via a setting in the Zappi lock menu. I’ve checked and that is true. There is still a a market for tethered and untethered wall boxes. Clearly, Easee don’t do a proper tethered unit with a permanently hard wired in, non removable cable. For them to claim it does both is marketing bs nonsense. It is an untethered box with a socket lock (exactly as is the untethered Zappi). How the hell is it described as a charging robot too? Utter tripe marketing crap IMHO.

@@ElectricVehicleMan Hello, thanks for your attention. 1st of all, non-tethered is extremely messy and uncomfortable for multiple reasons, for domestic or public applications. I don't think anybody needs an explanation. In terms of tethered options for domestic use, you can consider any ugly option as long as your house is is ugly in general or the unit goes on the side of the house. As soon as you need to put a tethered unit on the front wall of a new build (or any home that you want to keep looking good) you only have the Andersen A2 to achieve a modern floating design without any cables visible at all.
