This is just how intensely competitive markets work. It was the same thing over 100 years ago in the US when dozens of car manufacturers arose in Detroit. Most failed. It was a mad house but the result was a group of extremely efficient manufacturers that could produce a car for far, far less than anywhere else. Soon American cars were built and sold all over the world. This looks like a destructive process, but extreme competition pushes extreme efficiencies and improvements that lead to extraordinary results.
@ChickensAndGardening8 сағат бұрын
Same in Japan about 50 years ago. Their cars were junk in the '60s; according to one story I heard, a Japanese car salesman tried to travel across the U.S. in his Datsun (or whatever it was) and it was so unreliable he had to ditch it and rent an American car. The Japanese car makers competed ferociously however, and by the late 70s many of their cars were _better_ than Detroit's, at least in the subcompact and compact markets.

@@robsengahay5614 Actually depreciation is a huge problem if you finance your vehicle purchase as 80% of consumers do. Once the value of your car falls below your financed amount you are then upside down on your loan and have negative equity. With many people in the US putting as little as 5-10% down on a vehicle purchase and then to have the manufacturer discount the vehicles by the same amount over a period of time that changes your LTV (loan to value).

@@stargazer3828 Quite apart from the foolishness of buying depreciating assets with only a 5-10% down payment this is still only a problem when you want to sell or if the car is written off. All cars depreciate in value. For context back in 1989 my then wife and I bought our first apartment/flat with a 95% mortgage. Within less than 2 years the property value fell by over 30% leaving us with very substantial negative equity (far more than these car buyers). Fortunately we still had our jobs and could maintain the payments and didn’t need to sell and over several years the value increased to take us out of negative equity.

Here in Thailand, I bought a BYD Seal Performance for 1,500,000 baht. The retail price was 1,600,000 baht just two months earlier. Now, six months later, it’s down to 1,200,000 baht. They’ve undercut the entire market- and themselves. I will never buy a BYD again.

Oh boo hoo....and if you'd waited and gotten it for 1,200,000 baht you'd be patting yourself on the back.

It's a race to the bottom. And a race to close more western car plants (that could also build warplanes etc). China playing the long game and winning it.

Has anyone thought about china once all the competition has gone they will put their prices up because they won’t be any serious competition.

This is a race to the bottom typical of overcompeted saturated markets where technologicsl innovation has stagnated ( just like much road traffic is stagnant ie not flowing 🙄 The true flying car ,( not evtol ' taxi) is the natural and long overdue next stepto real progress....

US won't be part of the Global auto market. And if those products got in here Auto insurers will ask for 2x rate to insure. Accepting $2k/month of depreciation must be hard. Over the next few years lots will always be full of brand new prior year's models with batteries of 30% less range discounted 40%. It's gonna be a blood bath for a good while.

It’s interesting on your take on these price drops. When the Chinese do it, you call it a great deal. When legacy manufacturers do it you call it distress selling. Your bias to the Chinese manufacturers is embarrassing! The Chinese are in danger of completely destroying the AUS market. Everyone who bought these cars already is completely stuffed! This is not helping EV’s gain traction.

Prices will fall as these cars become cheaper to make. Many have been predicting that by 2025 EVs would achieve price parity with equivalent ICE cars. This hasn’t happened yet but it is inching closer. Definitely going to happen within 2 years.

BYD and the other Chinese are doing extremely well in Thailand. My wife holiday in Bali a couple of months back and she saw huge numbers of Chinese EVs on Indonesian streets. Guess Malaysia wouldn't be far behind.

Still think the Australian gov will add huge tariffs on Chinese cars coming here as part of the anti-china insanity.

China is Australias biggest exporter country, over 30%. You put tariffs on cars and the Chinese will make them pay.
