He knows how a fluorescent tube works, his way of teaching is the best way anyone could teach and that is through trial and error. He shows you how a person starting from scratch would think, and how you'd slowly start piecing the clues together. He shows you what you would/could do wrong and how he does it first so you don't make that mistake too. This is the best form of teaching and I can assure you he's the best in the field when it comes to make educational content entertaining as well. Cheers Mehdi

The purpose of the filaments at the end is not to vaporize the mercury. The Hg is already in gaseous form. The pressure inside is pretty low. You can immediatly turn the tube on by using a tesla coil like you did or putting it in a microwave oven. You can also use a neon transformer (15 kV). The purpose of the filaments is to lower the voltage requirement across the bulb by using THERMOIONIC emission effect which means that when you heat a metal, it kicks off electrons. The filaments are coated with a material that emits a lot of electrons. I think it is ThO2 (A white powder). The voltage requirement across the tube is something like 93 V for a 40 W bulb once the tube is on. The startup voltage is 400 to 600 V. PS: keep in mind that the tube contains Hg. Don't throw them in the garbage.

@Heads Mess It pollutes the environment. The amount of Hg in the atmosphere keeps going up, although it is a very small amount. Once you lose it to the atmosphere, there is no easy way to get it back. From what I hear, each tube, which is about 2 m long, contains about 15 to 20 mg. Breaking 680 to 906 tubes gives you 1 cm3 of liquid Hg. //Edit: PharmaGiles is correct. My math is off. It isn't 50 to 70 tubes but more like 680 to 906 tubes.

This is the science: When electricity is passed heating coils become hot and emit electrons thorium oxide is coated on the coils for increasing electron emission efficiency the inside of the lamp is coated with fluorescent material that also gives white colour to the lamp so the ionized atoms collide with molecules of mercury vapour and forms ultra violet rays these rays are absorbed by the fluorescent material and remitted as visible light.

6:33 I've also experienced fluorescent tubes that start to humm and glow red at both ends but don't acually start. And others that start with a few plasma pops, like "Plink, plink-plink-plink, plink!". And even others that start with a red glow on both ends that grows brighter slowly connecting to the middle, then releasing a bright flash with a "Plink!" and going dark again, with now both ends glowing red again and a wave of plasma silently expanding from the live side to the neutral side. When that completes it actually stays on.

yes these lights are called ( Preheat ) thay used a magnetic ballast and a starter that hase a bymatalic switch in a glass capsol that is fild with argon or neon, the argon glows a pail blue and the neon glows red, the gas in side the starter helps heat up the switch and thay bend witch thay will tuch echother and start the lamp. some times it will take one'c or two's to start butif the starter is older it will blenk a bit more

I'm an electrical engineer and design UV curing equipment, we have to do something similar sometimes when we work with gallium or iron doped lamps. We mainly use electronic drivers now but occasionally we'll get a stubborn lamp that doesn't want to start so we'll use the driver to put a high voltage over the lamp and then hit it with a Tesla coil to kick it on. It's pretty cool.

Could you make a video on how plasma lighters work?
@thetrashchannel12176 жыл бұрын
ItsJosh I guess it's just a small stun gun
@panickinglynx6 жыл бұрын
Karlas Dapkevičius Are you sure? I mean it is a way smaller form factor and way higher frequency
@thetrashchannel12176 жыл бұрын
ItsJosh well I'm not sure, this is just a guess. Of course it's smaller than an actual stun gun, because it's not ment to do its purpuse. The voltage of arcs should be rather small since the gap between electrodes is small, but frequeny is higher in order to get more arcs in the same amount of time and that way light up cigarete (or anything else) faster. So maybe a correct way to say it is plasma lighters are small arc generators. And because of that they don't need big transformers to get high voltages that a stun gun need, making them small in size and frequeny can be rised even in a small microchip. That's my guess. Now I'm also interested how do they actually work :)

I still used these in three of the rooms at home, I just love the "color temperature", also I find that the light get around and behind everything especially in the kitchen... LEDs are super bright in your eyes but still leave dark places in the room like behind chairs or under tables.
