I think it’s important to note that if the salt is in a solution, and the negative ions in the ionic compound aren’t halide (group 7), then the hydroxide ions are oxidised, which produces water and oxygen. Only if the negative ion is a halogen then it will be oxidised.
@lichh645 жыл бұрын
It needs to be a concentrated solution for the halide ion to get oxidised otherwise it will be the hydroxide ion.

Can anyone explain why the lead bromide changes to Pb2+ and Br- please?
@Saucerer64 жыл бұрын
it doesn't change, the lead bromide is molten, so it's been melted somewhat. All that does is dissociate the lead and bromide from their compound lead bromide and allows them to move around.
@naominewman7102 жыл бұрын
Pb (lead) forms 2+ ions Br (bromine) forms 1- ions so for a neutral ionic bond we have PbBr2 , when separated we get 1 Pb2+ and 2 Br- ions it is seperate because in an ionic bond the ions already exist in a lattice, usually unable to conduct or flow due to strong electrostatic intermolecular attraction but the heat from being made molten breaks the lattice and leaves the ions more or less flowing freely

So we can use molten NaCl or we can dissolve NaCl in water?
