Today’s video is all about hyponatremia for Nursing Students and NCLEX Review.
Hyponatremia is an electrolyte imbalance that occurs when sodium in the blood becomes diluted (sometimes from drinking too much water). This results in the kidneys being unable to excrete enough fluid to compensate for the excess intake.
Hyponatremia is associated with other conditions, such as SIADH. Watch to learn more about this critical electrolyte imbalance.

I experienced dizziness went for a check up and was told I had a pulse drop, I was referred to a cardiologist who found no structural problems with my heart but the skip in the beat. she recommended a pace maker but later found out through a blood test that my sodium was to low. I slowed on salt and sugar based on my dad's diabetic diet according to his doctor and was causing damage to myself keeping away from both too often...Is there a way to recoup from this. there's not other issues ?????

My two cents, after experiencing this myself. First a low carb diet will in fact undoubtedly cause hyponatremia. You cannot at all increase your salt to stick unless you have glucose. Doctors can fill you up with saline but that will flush out in no time and you'll find yourself suffering again. You need to increase salty carbohydrate foods. Juice although it has sugar will not help.... fry rice or pretzels or a bag of salty chips will help you. Also, salt as some ppl put in the comment section is saying is not the same all across the board. I developed hyponatremia from a sea salt that had 8% sodium . It was called dead sea cooking salt. The nutrition label had no warning or anything to indicate it was low sodium. People who do keto are on low carb diet and they constantly flush sodium which is called a keto flu. Whether you want to believe it or not, any form of low sugar/carbohydrate diet is keto, YES YOU ARE BOARDER LINE KETO. And since ppl are low sugar they will have an electrolyte problem. This will result in dysfunction of the cells and their ability to dilate and constrict properly thus causing high blood pressure. Any form of electrolyte imbalance can cause HBP. High fructose corn syrup and the likes are man made and dangerous to the body this artificial sugar can screw up your pancreas and liver. Also some foods are very hard to digest like veggies, corn, meat and these things require LOTS LOTS LOTS OF salt, so the salt you need is really going towards helping break down these things and not being used to hydrate you. In the wild herbivores are at salt licks because cellulose is hard to break down without the enzymes. Salt goes towards making enzymes. Carnivores do not drain the blood (which is similar to salt water) when they kill an animal and eat its flesh, this is how they get enough sodium. They are drinking blood. We eat fruit and meat and a variety of things and this diet does not exclude us from needing high amounts of salt like these other animals.

Actually, Loops and Thiazides are not K+ sparing. Those drugs are called Potassium Sparing diuretics, like Amiloride and Spironolactone (at the Collecting Duct). Thiazides spare Calcium though (increasing its concentration in the blood).

How much fresh water would you have to drink to feel any effect hyponatremia? I drank 2 kg over 61 kg of severely dehydrated body mass to disprove the advice to drink slowly. It all went in and disappeared. What time delay for the effect to occur? I did eventually have a couple stock cubes (lol). Do other minerals in the water substitute for sodium?

I know this has nothing to do with this video but I just watched your video about low sodium. I suffer from way too much fluid intake daily. I drink way too much every day, which flushes absolutely any salt I may have put into my body throughout the day. It's to the point where my muscles are swollen, primarily on the left side of my body, when I drink, I'm exhausted, some days lethargic, all day, and I have sensory flashes, fizzing noises in my head and increased headaches. But when I introduced the smallest amount of salt, my left arm, chest hurt. My heart starts to race and I have a hard time breathing. It seems like I'm having a heart attack and it's the scariest thing in the world so I'll drink water to flush it out, which puts me back at square one! I don't know how to reintroduce salt correctly and stop over drinking. Sorry to post this here but all doctors I've gone to have given do help.

Hi Mark, I took a laxative called sodium picosulfate and since then I am experiencing lots of water retention, cramps, muscle pain and weakness, insomnia. My guess is hyponatremia and hypokalemia. I went to doctors here in Mexico but they are not familiarized, what can I do? Ingest more salt ? Please help

Wouldn't taking diuretics make you lose more sodium with the water and make the problem worse?

For hyponatremia how about just a good quality pink sea salt for raising sodium levels quickly?
@hollydaugherty2620
@hollydaugherty2620 2 жыл бұрын
1: “pink” sea salt is not actually different than any other sea salt. 2: hyponatremia is extremely serious and can’t be cured by simply giving someone salt to eat or drink - it happens typically from a serious physiological issue that is causing sodium loss.
