Wouldn''t the Chloride Ion be - 1s^2 2s^2 2p^6 3s^2 3p^6 as it is gaining an extra electron? This is what my textbook shows.

Very clear description but a couple of errors - Shouldn't the second Argon example at 10.40 mins be calcium? also Chloride ion has 18 electrons, your example is with 17 electrons, so is a Chlorine atom.

hi there so im a bit confused about vanadium as freesciencelessons said its 1s2,2s2,2p6,3s2,3p6,3d3,4s2 but the order is always 1s,2s,2p,3s,3p,4s and then 3d. Can u plz explain

It’s because 4s orbitals have a lower energy than 3d, so it fills first. I don’t think you’d be marked down for writing 3s 3p 3d, 4s , but the way you’re supposed to do it is 3s 3p 4s 3d. (Then 4p 4d......)
