Thank you SO much! Every single video was so helpful! This has probably been explained to me one hundred times but never broken down this way. After three years and 3 different chem classes I finally understand every part of it! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

The period's number specifies the sublevel of the s orbital in that period. As you can see in the configuration, the s for Fe is 4s. However, the d orbital for the 4th period is 3d, since in order of energy, 4s comes before 3d. This is mentioned in the two videos before this one.

Why does it take my chemistry professor 3 hours to explain this?? I was thinking the whole time " oh shit I'm failing this course". With your videos I'm learning a hell of a lot more and now I really hate my boring ass professor.. Thanks for sharing your easy learning methods instead of telling us to memorize the whole damn chart... This rocks instead of reading the textbook..

Hi kent, For the (Fe) atom, you wrote 3d^6 as the last past. However, isn't it in the 4 period so shouldn't it be 4d^6? i'm just a little confused of why it is 3 but in the 4th period on the table. Thanks :)

@sweetienena
@sweetienena 11 жыл бұрын
Because its not the Cl atom, but Cl ion= (state of gain or loss of electrons). If you remember how to more or less predict an ionic charge from the periodic table, you`d remember that for groups IA the ionic charge would be +1 and for group IIA would be +2. For groups VA to VIII A you would subtract 8 to the the element`s period. Ex: Cl is from group VIIA, so it would be 7-8= -1. Cl has 17 electrons in it`s neutral state,and one extra electron in it`s ionic state. This makes up for a total of 18 electrons. Hence 3p6 instead of 3p5 on the electron configuration.Hope it helps.
