+Darrell Batton: Because *bad* information is worse than none at all, and unfortunately this video has lots of misinformation. You're better off learning *good* technique, which will save you lots of time and heartache down the line. This guy keeps his iron WAY too hot (so the solder oxidizes faster, giving you less time to work), he applies far too much solder to the joints, flicking solder off the iron is dangerous... shall I go on? Instead of attacking the messenger, go look at the sources I've recommended and see what proper soldering technique is.

Something else to mention: if you don't have any other heat sources to shrink your heat shrink tubing, you can use the metal shaft of your soldering iron. I had to do that because I was in a pinch and it worked flawlessly.

Great video! Thank you very much. It certainly helps having the right tools. Today I tried to change a few caps on my Slingbox HD and even though I thought I had the right tools -- Radio Shack 25w soldering iron and desoldering tool, braided copper, I still couldn't get them off without overheating the board. I think I need a little more heat (40w perhaps) and a better solder sucker. Those rubber ones 'don't' suck compared to those pump-up solder-suckers that I've seen in YT videos. If I get the right tools and use some of your other tricks I should be fine. Anyway, thanks again for a very straight-forward and easy to understand tutorial. :thumbs up: /subscribed

Use RMA flux while doing this, always. The flux located at the core of the solder is never enough. Just enough is there so the solder wire itself can flow evenly. Still, you should always use more flux. (I work in Class 3 for Military and commercial. Flux is your friend.)

+MghUnit407 What's interesting is that while soldering is adding a different material (to the copper of the wires), the solder actually slightly dissolves the copper of the wire, creating a strong alloyed joint which is both electrically and mechanically sound. (That said, it's good practice to always design a strong mechanical joining anyway, and not rely solely on the solder for mechanical support. For example, how the wires in this video are twisted together first. You wouldn't just lay them next to each other and have only the solder linking them.)

Thank you for this video. Never needed to do more than solder a few wires together. But now I needed to solder in headers to a tiny circuit board. I was afraid of ruining it! It's a convenient heat source, and it accomplishes the purpose, just as well. I know some HVAC guys who use an acetylene torch to shrink it down, just because the torch is handy.

With all due respect, I really hope you that's not how you really solder THT components for professional purposes. The soldering is supposed to go penetrate through the hole to form a good connection and it will also reduce vibrations and the excess solder is not supposed to make a concave dome nor a triangle, but to form the shape of a volcano that gradually go down to the base. The quick upper motion is also useless, check the specification for what temperature you should be using, that would explain the upper motion and the color of your solders... When it comes down to through-hole components you need to have a beautiful volcano shape, a certain brillance on your solder (pure tin doesn't shine though) and penetration of solder.

​@@iandaysh3193 With all due respect, if you're teaching people something, do it right. Let's assume he's using NPTH prototype PCB yeah? If you solder your components as if they were being soldered on PTH PCBs and they're not hugging ring, you're even worse than I originally thought hahaha. If you're using NPTH you need to give your component proper support and push the legs either outward or inward, it needs to hug the hole properly, solder isn't magic glue. The soldering job is horrible anyways. 60/40 isn't lead free, a proper solder job should be shiny, not matte finish, it cooled down too quickly, fucking flick of the wrist bullshit.
