If you like the "Let's Read" series, I am starting to make supporter-exclusive read-through videos available on Patreon and here on KZbin (for channel members). These are being created in addition to the normal, publicly released episodes (like this one) which will continue to be made. Patreon membership is just $1 per month, and gets you early access to most CGQ content, as well as access to exclusive videos. This kind of support is what makes these videos possible and is in fact what funded the purchase of the very issue covered in this episode, along with our new recording setup! The first exclusive episode of Let's Read is available now, and covers an issue of the Japanese gaming magazine "Mega Drive Fan" from July of 1991. Check it out at the following link, and as always thanks for watching!! www.patreon.com/cgquarterly

I'm amazed these old magazine are in such great condition, especially as a first issue of a new magazine which nobody likely cared about at the time, no doubt found and kept safe by a collector. Most magazines especially back in the day were just treated as glorified newspapers, usually rolled up, creased and thrown away when finished reading. It never ceases to amaze me how old pristine things can somehow end up untouched for decades in someones attic before being brought to light for the reverence and history they deserve.

So many years have gone by it doesn’t even seem real. This time in history was a period when we had some of the best gaming possible. We had gamers who made games that were creative, beautiful, and fun to play. Hardware was pushed to its maximum and the gamer was important. It is all gone now. Soulless profiteering, predatory companies, and obsolete hardware are the norm. It’s all about the gamers wallet instead of the gamer.

Electronic Gaming Monthly was my favorite gaming magazine. Some of the Mortal Kombat covers give me wild nostalgia seeing them. I spent a lot of time with those books. EGM always had more codes than Gamepro. I studied those codes and special moves. I would go win streaks for hours thanks to those codes. Crowds would be around, quarters lined up. Aladdin’s Castle at the mall. I also made copies of the pages with Mortal Kombat special move /fatality codes and sold them in school 😎

On the question of when EGM 1 was published, we should remember that the videogame magazines back then had extremely long lead times between going to press and hitting the retail shelves. We’re talking three months. So if this issue arrived in May, then it would have likely gone to press back in February. This explains why you are reading about upcoming games in March.

Guerilla War is special for me. It's my #1 favorite NES game of all time -- I have a CIB copy of the game above my desk. The character you use isn't just any dude, by the way -- it's the revolutionary Che Guevara ("Guevara" is the name of the Japanese version of the game). Player 2 is subsequently Fidel Castro. They were changed to generic characters when the game was translated to English because we were still amidst the Cold War at the time, and SNK was afraid of drumming up any sentiments or having any false flags or Red Scares.
