Does your BMW feature an electronic gear shifter?
Any new BMW model with an automatic transmission will feature an electronic gear shifter. Learn how to utilize the electronic gear shifter to shift gear and park your BMW.
The transmission settings are clearly printed on its face, to ensure you always know if you're in ""park,"" ""reverse,"" or ""driving."" Once the vehicle is started, you will automatically be in ""park."" To select ""neutral,"" press forward past the point of resistance one time, twice for ""reversing.""
In order to select ""drive"" from the park position, pull back on the gear shifter twice.

BMW should make a video on how to put the car in neutral or disengage the transmission when your car will not start or the battery is dead. I am sure 100s of tow truck drivers dragged the car on the flatbed which, is not good for the transmission.
@jonathansmith7306
@jonathansmith7306 2 жыл бұрын
My concern exactly. Although I believe even if the car doesn't start, the car still turns on enough to shift to neutral. When we left our X3 out all Alaska winter, it wouldn't turn over, but the car display still lit up. It was buried under the snow so we didn't see whether or not we could get to neutral though

Why does this gear shifter have to move forward to go in reverse and backwards to go in drive.

Because the lever has only one physical position. You change gears by toggling it away from its rest position (Park). I suppose they could've designed it so you can only toggle it backwards (in order of P, R, N, D). The P button can still retain its original function of shifting from whatever gear back to P. In short, this is an electronic shifter retaining the physical look of a conventional mechanical shifter.

@thejohn7821
@thejohn7821 2 жыл бұрын
just stay in drive. The reason anyone wants you to stay in neutral is to prevent you resting your foot and letting off the pedal potentially pulling away making an accident. More often than not they are either bad drivers/had a bad experience or are shit scared of doing 42 in a 40 despite owning a m4.

Any car in neutral without the brake, foot or hand IS OUT OF CONTROL !
@unimagin2ble
@unimagin2ble Жыл бұрын
@@thejohn7821 no, it's the fact that if someone were to rear end you in a traffic stop your foot would slip off the brake and your car would go bombing into traffic potentially causing another accident, whereas if you just select neutral with the handbrake on that won't happen

I totally agree Jake B...I have a 2022 X1 and it is very confusing to go in “reverse” by pushing the gear shift forward. Common sense says forward means to drive forward. I wonder how many accidents occur because of this backwards gear shift? I hope my mind stays sharp for the next 3 years until I trade this car in for another car.

@@abdul-kabiralegbe5660 I still don’t like the shift…very dangerous and I can see why some people may drive through a store instead of putting the car in reverse or park. For us 60 years an older people, we need less confusion.

What is so confusing with this gear shift is that you press forward for reverse. Not good. I always associate pressing forward for drive. I wish BMW would change that...it’s very dangerous.
@ashn_antics9123

Really? I find it very common in most cars I've driven in. Drive was mostly at the bottom and reverse is at the top with park
@abdul-kabiralegbe5660
@abdul-kabiralegbe5660 Жыл бұрын
@@ashn_antics9123 I think the previous commenter was referring to how the default position of this shifter's Park position is behind the Reverse position unlike other vehicles where the shifter position in Park is ahead of the Reverse position. This is because the BMW shift lever doesn't have a different physical location for each gear unlike a more conventional shift lever where even a blindfolded person can tell what gear it's in just by feeling what position the lever is in. Of course that same person can shift the BMW once they know how it works.
