If I am not wrong, he uses his TD-27 module to trigger SSD5. I do the same, just with a TD-17 and EZDrummer 2. You can connect your E-drum module via USB with the PC on which you have a so called VST (SSD5, EZD2, Superior drummer 3, etc.) installed. The midi data from the drum module is sent to the PC and instead of the module internal sounds, you can hear the sounds from the drum library. With most drum modules this (in my personal opinion!) makes the whole experience of playing e-drums way better. Especially if you want to use a Roland drum module, since they only have one shot samples. That means, no matter how hard you hit the drum, you will always hear the same sample, just at different volumes. A VST usually has up to 127 different sounds (that is down to the 127 velocity levels of your triggers) for every velocity with which you hit the drum. Therefore makes the sound much more realistic. Well, as long as acoustic sounds are your target. If you want to play electronic music only, it doesn´t really matter. But there are drum modules existing, which have VSTs installed on them or can use multi layered samples. The Pearl Mimic Pro for example uses SSD5 right on the module. The Gewa G9 is quite new but seems to have a selfmade library on the module, that can compete with the Mimic, just not enough information out yet. Than there is the 2Box Drumit5 MKII, which is soundwise probably the best module out there and you can load actuall sounds from any VST or selfrecorded into the module. Last but not least the Alesis Strike has lots of adjusting possibilities and can use VST sounds as well. Maybe a bit overkill, but I hope I could answere your question :-)

@@markq23 No problem. I would have wished for information like that at the beginning. Only knew about Roland at the time. Today I probably would have chosen something different. At least regarding drum module. Hardware of course is good. Basically every pad on the market. Maybe not Yamaha (because a lot of their stuff is not compatible, but not sure). But they do have presets for trigger settings installed on the Mimic, where you can say I have this and that pad from Roland, ATV or whatever. If you are in the market for a VAD506, which means that you don´t have to look too exact on the dime :-P, I can recommend to have a look at Drum-Tec (German Company, lots of videos on their KZbin channel). They manufacture acoustic sized pads themselfs and the shells are actually made by Sonor. Another one that might be interesting is Jobeky Drums. Personaly have no experience with them. But they also make shells as well as cymbals from metal, not rubber. But I just don´t seem to find a decent review on them. And the cymbals of ATV are very good as well. They offer an 18" Ride, which is not a digital pad like the Roland one. And they have cymbals in different shapes, so you can have a FX or China. Therefore more expensive. But than again. You will not do something wrong with Roland hardware.

As Wollestar said, I use midi + samples to record my covers because it's more convenient as I can choose the snare and kick that will fit perfectly the song, it's makes thing easier when I mix. But I have to rectify some things, I never use VST when I practice because the VST doesn"t sounds as natural as the internal sounds. Roland drum module don't use one shot samples, you have different samples for each velocity, which makes the feeling more natural, a VST certainly don't have 127 different sounds, way less for most of them. Also the Roland Drum module is the only one that provides such endless sound design possibilities, and the triggering is the best on the market (this is the only brand that has digital pads). This is something to consider. Then it's all about your preferences and your ears.
