Thanks, for the vid. At first, I thought that I was supposed to sum up the first three colors on the resistor and I was wondering why the values on the package were different from my 'calculations'. Now, it's all clear!

Sounds like 510 with 4 more zeros, so 5,100,000 ohms and 10 percent tolerance.

Umm what happen if i add different color code on my board ? I have a broken power supply that the resistor broken,i have a different resistor on other broken board that has different colour,but the line have 5. Is it ok?

Depends on their values and the circuit.

I have a receiver with DVD player that has a bad resistor. I know the ohms by reading the bands but how do i get the others numbers so I can buy the correct resistor watts? Pls help me.
@Electronzap4 жыл бұрын
Wattage of a resistor is mostly based on size. So I am guessing that a resistor of the same size will be just fine wattage wise. Especially if it is a higher value resistor.

BUT HOW DO YOU TELL WHICH IS THE FIRST STRIPE?
@Electronzap3 жыл бұрын
If it isn't brown or gold, then it is probably the first band. If both ends are brown, hopefully the first band is closer to the other bands than the tolerance band. Unfortunately, sometimes it's hard to tell which is which if both ends are brown.

What will be the value of digit and multiplier if the 3rd and 4th is gold
@Electronzap5 жыл бұрын
If the last band is gold (typically 4 band beige resisistors), that means it has a 5% tolerance rating. If the second to last band is gold, that means you take the number from the digits and multiply it by 0.1 to get the value in ohms.

Which end of the resistor do you start the reading
@Electronzap12 күн бұрын
Tolerance goes to the right, it is gold (5%) for beige resistor, and brown (1%) for the blue resistors which are more common these days. Unfortunately the first digit band is commonly brown for 1, which can be confusing if there isn't extra space between the value bands and the tolerance band.
@VA-hf9on5 жыл бұрын
How do you know from what end you start reading?
@Electronzap5 жыл бұрын
The tolerance band goes on the right. Which is easy when it is a gold band, such as the beige resistors usually have. Unfortunately the blue resistor's brown 1% tolerance band can get confusing if the first digit is also brown. Hopefully the tolerance band is spaced farther away from the other colors, but I often can't tell if it is. If you have to deal with a couple values which have mirror images of color, then you'd probably have to use a multimeter to measure them.

I suspect that the black band at the end represent something other than tolerance. I'd post a picture of it to the ask electronics subreddit on reddit. Multiple people usually recognize unusual components there.

hi can i ask if its ok to change the resistor of my LM317 voltage regulator, cu'z i lost the 1k omhs the purple one and now i have the biege but it is 1k omhs also is it possible?
@Electronzap9 ай бұрын
Long as they are the same size, it doesn't matter. They will have the same resistance and wattage. The beige ones might not be quite as close to the rated value indicated by the color code, but that usually doesn't matter in most circuits.

I had a question I'm replacing resistors on an old vintage radio from the '60s it's a walkie-talkie and most of the resistors the and color is silver for 10% can I use a 5% instead cuz I'm having a hard time finding a 10% on eBay

Yeah, you can always use a lower tolerance resistor.

@Electronzap4 жыл бұрын
I could do some googling and make a guess, but I'd suggest posting that image with as much extra detail you know about where it came from to reddit. I think the subreddit I usually browse is called askelectronics or something similar. Someone will probably know that resistor pretty well and give you an accurate answer. I'm guessing that the black band has an additional meaning to it than the standard color code and tolerance.
