In this video we look at the basic electrolytic capacitor, what it is, how it works, and how it should be used in electronic circuits. The video also covers the way an electrolytic capacitor is specified: its main specifications including value, tolerance, working voltage, ripple current and more.
The electrolytic capacitor, or more correctly the aluminium electrolytic capacitor or aluminum electrolytic capacitor, is one of the most popular types used in electronic circuits. The electrolytic capacitor is one of the major types used for values above around 1 microfarad. It gains the name electrolytic capacitor from the fact that it uses an electrolyte.
We also take a look at where the electrolytic capacitor can be used in electronic circuits - positions where it is ideal for use and some electronic circuits where it is not so good. We take a look at the electrolytic capacitor characteristics, its advantages and disadvantages.
Sometimes aluminium electrolytic capacitors (aluminum electrolytic capacitors) have a bad name, so we look at its limitations and how it can be used to provide a long reliable and effective working life.

I have an guitar amplifier with an electrolytic cap on the power board ,the make and value is marked as ;Philips, 6u8t,40v,l 3,...I cannot find one with this value.Can i use a 10uf,40v cap in its place.? Is the 4.7uf cap not strong enough.

Normally electrolytic capacitors have a very wide tolerance, often +100 % and - 50%. The main thing to watch is the working voltage. This should be the same of higher than that in the original design.

I'm Pretty Sure There"s are 6U8 yF capacitors to be fond in both 100 volt & 2oo Volt and i think i have some 4oo Volts Myself Lyingn around from butchering SwitchMode PWR suplys ((some of them probably was PC SuppLys witch is almost always the noisy switch mode type..... Remember that the voltage only states for the most part how thick and high-voltage withstanding the thin plastic film in between the metal plates witch makes the conection you solder your contacts to.. So As Long As The Cap Voltage Is NOT Lower Then What You Had, Your Safe.... And If IT's Not In a Timing critical part of the circuit, power supply for eksampel it could never hurt,,, Capacitors are a world better today then what they was 75n years ago........

I've been keeping old electronic devices from the early 90's and 2000's example snes console, ps2 slim and crt tvs will these devices have problems with aluminum electrolytic capacitors if stored for a long time?

Often they last quite well. Older electrolytic like those in valve or the radios need to be handled with care. More modern ones tend to be relatively reliable, but be aware they do degrade with time.

The original Xbox had a capacitor that was known to leak. I wouldnt take any chances. I plan on recapping my consoles and CRT TVs my CRT pictures are all fucked up and I suspect the caps are bad.

i have electrolytic capacitors mounted on electronic devices from 1990, how long can these devices remain unused and without the electrolytic capacitors failing due to disuse?

Difficult to give exact figures because different manufacturers, manufacturing processes age at different rates. I think I would proceed with caution and see how you go. They'll probably be OK.

from personal experience and some research with mostly 20 year old game consoles electrolytic go bad wither they are used or not, wither it goes bad faster used frequently or not idk. Electrolytic can go bad as soon as 7ish years but theirs's also reports of electrolytic lasting 30 or more years with no obvious signs of degrading. How long they last depends heavily on the specific brand and model of the electrolytic capacitor. if you are trying to replace capacitors i recommend doing some personal research in a specific electrolytic capacitor before buying them. i am not super knowledgeable in electrolytic, hints why i clicked on this video, so don't take everything i said to be absolute fact. i hope you found or will find the information you are looking for on this subject. I am here to learn so if you learned any useful information since your message feel free to tell or correct me on my information given.

Electrolytic capacitors mounted on electronic circuits of devices manufactured after 1990 can remain unused for as long as possible without this disuse causing failures and depolarization in the electrolytic capacitors?

It is not possible to say because the time will vary according to conditions, manufacturer, capacitor value and other things. 30 years is a long time, so I would be very careful when using it.

The only thing I don't understand is why some electrolytics can be much larger but have the same uF and the same voltage and even lower voltage than one that is a quarter of their size. :/

There are many things that can alter the size: manufacturing process, reliability, ripple current capability, etc . . .
