Hello Dr. Shirsavar, Why the capacitance is mentioned in AC event thought the they have DC bias effect. They should be measured in DC condition, isn't it?

Good information. Could you please post a video on measuring the Capacitance and ESR of the electrolytic capacitors using LCR meter from 100Hz to 100KHz. I read that a two parameter (Cs-Rs) will not give accurate capacitance due to interference of esl at higher frequencies and so we have to use three parameter model(Ls-Cs-Rs). It would be very useful if u post a video on this measurement

For the aluminium or polymer electros does voltage rating affect ESR? For example if i replace a 10v rated cap with a 100v rated cap is there any substantial characteristic difference?

You didn't mention polarity, which drives selection as much as value.

Unfortunately you forget tell something about leakage current, which pretty high for solid polymer capacitors. 1000uf 16V polymer capacitor may have leakage current about 1-3mA for example

why don't capacitor manufacturers rate how much power they can handle like resistos. Once you calculate the capacitance and the power of the circuit you need to choose a capacitor that can handle the heat. Why does nobody talk about the heat dissipation of a capacitor ?

Because this dissipations depends on many factors like frequency, ESR, shape of the current, ambient temperature etc. It's not so easy to measure it as for ordinal resistor.

I'mt trying to get a smoothed DC on bridge rectifier and a smoothing capacitor. In my case adding a smoothing capacitor leads to an increase in power consumption from the grid (x3 times more). Why is this happening and what should be done to eliminate this effect?

The smooth cap is increasing the RMS voltage on the output side, likely allowing more current to flow into your device. A rectified AC power source will drop to zero volts from the peak as the voltage dives so will power consumption, until the voltage starts rising again. The probably the best way to lower power consumption is to use a voltage regulator that operates near the device's optimal voltage requirement.
