Hi Sorin. Quick question would it be possible to find the shorted capacitor without a thermal camera and voltage injection tool/power supply? Keep up the great work!

Sorin's old videos show that, he just feels the warm/hot areas using his hands and uses zippo petrol on the spot to verify the shorted cap

Feel the heat with your soul !!! but all jokes aside you can sprinkle a little flux and watch the component you think is shorted if it does heat up it should melt the flux off & fast. but its better to get a cheap thermal cam good ones are GOAT but cheap ones should get you one MB fixed but all in all i recommend bringing it to pros they can and will do it much better then you could trust me . Personally I am okay with leaving that cap off, there are (i think) 12 of them on the CPU high side. But these caps are prone to failure, so even if you only get 50 for the job, you should really invest 2 minutes more and ct for a proper fuse. It broke, so it is there for a reason (unlike those backlight fuses which essentially never break). Don't get me wrong, I'm all against over-engineering, but (main power rail) fuses are there for a good reason.

When someone’s home is set on fire by one of these ‘fuses’ and the insurance company of the owner knocks on the door he will regret this. I don’t get the gain of this practice. By some real fuses with usual ratings and you don’t have to hassle with these dodgy wires anymore. Even doesn’t save him some time. I don’t get it. peace

@@Druidus98 I couldn't agree with you more. I know Apple over-engineer the board (I'm an Apple board level technician) but the main power rail has a fuse for a reason and those caps are always failing. Just prey that nothing happens to the owner in the future. All for the sake of changing the fuse which cost pennies!!!

Can I ask how 0.05 volts is enough for voltage injection to detect the shorted component and why not higher voltage is used? I thought you usually need at least 1 to 1.5V to inject in the circuit to show the heat on the affected shorted component
@macwake11 ай бұрын
That just depends on the resistance of the shorted cap. Best is low rsistance but not 0.0 ohms, then it wil get proper hot at under 1v. If it hat 2 or 3 ohms, the voltage must have been 1-3v to get it hot enough
@SkyDown1511 ай бұрын
Cause if its a shorted mosfet before the cpu, then with higher volt your chance is to burn the cpu is higher. Safe tu use 1v max. With thermal camera even one degree different is very well seen

Thanks for the reply@@macwake.
@emmanuelvalmas564811 ай бұрын
Thanks for the reply@@SkyDown15. I see most similar repair videos, for Android phones example, voltage injection goes up to 4.2V. For a laptop 1V should be the safest maximum? Also is it a personal preference to use resistance mode to diagnose a shorted cap rather than diode mode or just continuity to measure a fuse?

I dont use them either to be honest if i have the time sure ill change them but in Dubai in a successful shop trust me i dont have the "time" or "luxury" to look for "the right" spare part as you call it and you as the customer get your laptop back in good working condition with waranty on repair so whats the issue here ? your sad because you think the next time they charge you a high price for MB repair your not getting the "right parts" for your buck ? well here's the thing ignorance is bliss if you don't like it sure go ahead and learn to do it yourself find the issue find the right parts order them pay for delivery wait 2-3 weeks (all of this in a great time were you find the right part from china or Ebay) and ....... then you can hope the right part works. Buddy just be happy you got your laptop back in 1-2 days instead of a month.

Sorin will replace the cap in the next video 😀 But in all seriousness, Sorin how can we identify if a capacitor is on the Input or Output and when it's a must to replace 1 just to ensure the other left over caps are not stressed?
@radio-ged462611 ай бұрын
If the capacitor is across the power rail and is just used to get rid of noise or ripple then there will be many others doing the same job. The capacitors are rated for the power rail they are on and are effectively in parallel with each other on that rail so they won't be stressed if one is removed, you'll just have slightly less capacitance for noise or ripple removal - it most likely won't make a difference. There is usually enough tolerance in the design. I know Sorin jokes but one less capacitor really can be one less capacitor to fail in most cases. And when you're up against time and cost with low margins - if you can take a short cut and still have an effective and reliable repair - that's what you go for.

@@TonyHamlyn Rubbish... You cannot use cooper wire as a fuse since it's meting point of Cu is higher and resistance is very low and current can flow through it without melting it and without breaking the circuit.
