I agree that laptop deserved a little more investigation time spent on it, but that's how it goes: we have good days and bad days at work. This channel has actually gave me great confidence to fix 3 old laptops already. One VAIO with a shorted USB (which I found using the multimeter and then realized the chip was burned when I got my microscope over it), another one Acer with a bad capacitor and one HP with a shorted internal battery (yeah, the battery itself was shorted). This is a great channel with amazing content. Thanks!

Just use it on diode mode (beep mode). It can detect shorts between positive and negative rails (that shouldn't happen).

The key word here is PWM - pulse width modulation. The fan has 5v on the red (+) all the time, but the frequency applied to the fourth pin controls its speed. If this is stuck low, the fan won't spin. If you disconnect it, it will always run at full speed.
@ДимитърАндонов-ъ7е

Your are right it's a simple pwd controlled DC motor with a driver and the feedback is a diode for the temperature, so pwm signal is generated from the superIO from what I understand, don't know how it failed, maybe they didnt calculated properly the supplied current?

In case you miss the description: "After i stopped the recording, the laptop was still shutting down randomly. 3 hours later a found actually the SIO chip is faulty, that's why the fan was not working also"; In any case i liked the alternative solution for the fan.
@robertvogel4056
@robertvogel4056 2 жыл бұрын
This is not the case, even if the SIO is faulty it will not cause the laptop to shut off, what would cause it to shut off is the EC which is programmed to protect your laptop if overheated or one of the fans stop working. The fix is simple, link cpu side pwn signal to gpu side on the board, would be a cheap fix and would work well in most cases and the EC will not trigger a shutdown as it will see that the pwn signal is ok and the fan is spinning.

Even when you do doggy work you can allways do it better, for example cut the wires a bit further away from the connector, that way no plastic would be melted, the connector would be still removable for various reasons in the future and it would be easier to solder the wires. Stupid design but unbelievably this is the way they built these MSI laptops. Literally that laptop didn't need any "fixing" in your defence I spent 2 days trying to understand why that fan wasn't working even with high temperatures. In don't understand why msi did that. Remember for the next time when you encounter the same problem. Press the fan button first, and if it doesn't work then fix it :)

I have also done this several times in the past, resulting in bad incisors and a visit to the dentist that costs a lot of money. Strip the insulation off the wires with a wire stripper or sharp knife, but keep your teeth healthy and avoid this operation, tempting as it may be. A golden advice is worth money. GRTS Andy

there's plus, minus, one is TACH signal from the fan back (mostly yellow) for the rpm and one is a PWM signal from the board to control the fan speed. 99% of all fans in desktops or laptops and even in servers work this way. The first thing i'd have done is looking into the BIOS and check for the fan control. Then checking the operating system. Sometimes there are Fan-Tools, that take over control completely... and cause these problems. Not measuring and not looking into the BIOS was really dodgy...

Syncing GPU & CPU PWM fans is a really REALLY bad idea, cause depending on the load (gaming or video editing etc) you can have a high CPU load thus high CPU temp while at the same time having a low GPU temp and vice versa. For example, if you use AIDA64 your CPU can go up to 100C while the GPU stays at 50C and if you run a GPU intensive game you can have 60C on the CPU and 90+ on the GPU easy. Now imagine having a low RPM on the GPU fan on the 2nd scenario cause it is synced with the CPU thermal sensor...

You have a point but the heat pipes from the gpu go to both fans, Sorin did talk about it at about 4:00 . And the fans did spin faster when he heated the pipes on the gpu with the hot air gun so it seems to be ok. Even if not the pc is smart enough to shut it self down if temp was to exceed in some case.
@inwerp
@inwerp 2 жыл бұрын
@@sakisgri2165 thats not correct Even if half of pipes where shared there is no way heat on one chip could warm up another crystal hot enough to get to the internal temp sensor. Hotgun is not valid test at all, this is 200-400c applied directly to the pipe.

I had a similar cooled laptop (based on clevo p670rs-g). My laptop cooling was the best I've seen for a 'slim' laptop. I'm not an engineer or someone who repairs laptops for living, but I've seen a lot of laptops as " the tech friend who understands PCs", to clean and repaste the machines of friends and family. I've never seen a laptop running a game, to be cool on the CPU and hot on the GPU with differences like 60 to 90C. IMO laptops BIOS is always trying to keep the fans quiet and even when the temps are 95C, it doesn't blow at 100%. (I've seen few laptops with a Control Center that can push the fans to 100%, which shows you how much louder they can get). My point is that when gaming, even in lighter games, from what I've seen, most laptops are going to let the CPU reach atlest 85-90 degrees on the CPU and it should't be such a big deal the way he did the repair. P.S. My experience is on older laptops with 2cores or 4c8t Intel CPUs, so you are probably correct that the CPU can be a lot colder, if you run something like Heaven's Benchmark and no load on the CPU.
@inwerp
@inwerp 2 жыл бұрын
@@ИлиянБелев Gaming Laptops have much more pressure on cooling system which means manufacturers try to keep low rpm as long a possible, otherwise it would be constantly loud + have much shorter lifespan. As a repair engineer i see absolutely no issue in fixing pwm signal even if its lost, worst case that would be EC replacement + flash + pwm controller replacement. However it should be considered as a board level repair, basically cooling system us as important as any other system on laptop and it is one of most common failure reasons. There are many other components which shoild be cooled like GPU RAM and switching mosfets.

@@adrianmedina7065 maybe the copper heatsink is punctured and the small amount of gas that should be result of the liquid inside the copper is not completing the full cycle of moving the heat as is was designed to. I use to be amazed with the technical skill and dodginess of Mr. Sorin. But after watching this video I felt disappointed. Sometimes is better to take a deeper look at the mainboard before turning a fixing into a mess. On 4 wires fans, PWM signal is used to control spinning speed. That PWM signal comes usually from a tiny chip than converts the digital signal from SIO into PWM signal. There is a big chance to that tiny chip to be faulty, not SIO. Futhermore, if a discordance between the speed determined by PWM signal and the speed sensed by the fan speed sensor is detected, SIO might decide to make an emergency shutdown in order to avoid overheating damages. That can be the reason for that laptop to shutdown randomly.

Chat gpt read your comment and it's said it's almost correct, only thing he corrected is "PWM signal is typically generated by a small chip on the motherboard, not the System Input/Output (SIO) controller chip. I'm disgusted by the work you did here. You can't go around cutting wires without first measuring the stresses. You are not even sure if it is an ordinary fan vcc, rpm, gnd or a fan of 4 connections vcc, pwm, rpm, gnd. That machine is worth a fortune and you arrange to place jumper wire with hot silicone??? Terrible level of work. It is stupid to argue that by reviewing what happens you can be damaged more, the only way that happens is that you are a total incompetent. and so you know they are fans by pwm that are handled by the KBC based on independent thermocouples. clearly the fan works so you should check the PWM line from the fan connector to the EC/KBC. It goes through a resistor of value 0 that may have been damaged. also the connection of the EC pin with respect to the motherboard. and finally the temperature sensing lines since the EC generates an independent PWM for each fan depending on the temperatures

idk, but the laptop was working and we charge the money for that repair, which is all that matter in a computer shop. Here is England, if you are not able the make at least a hundred pound/hour, then you are not a good addition to the shop. How you are expecting to be paid £15-£20 per hour if you can't make £100? Its all about the money in a computer shop and all what matter is the job to be done and work in the warranty time which is 3 months, sorry, but i didn't make the rules. For me, kbc/pwm/ec are just words, noise, things which are not matter, things which sound like a lot of waste of time.

hello hernandg5054 - good comment ! PWM Control by KBC: In many laptops, the Keyboard Controller (KBC) or Embedded Controller (EC) plays a crucial role in fan control. The KBC is responsible for handling various system functions, including fan control based on temperature data obtained from independent thermocouples. a. PWM Line: checking the PWM line from the fan connector to the EC/KBC. This is an important step because the PWM signal generated by the EC/KBC needs to reach the fan to control its speed. If there is a problem with the PWM line, it could lead to fan speed issues. b. Resistor Damage: If the resistor is damaged, it could affect the PWM signal's integrity. It's essential to check the condition of that resistor. c. EC Pin Connection: A loose or damaged connection can disrupt communication between the EC/KBC and the motherboard, potentially affecting fan control. d. Temperature Sensing Lines: The EC/KBC generates independent PWM signals for each fan based on temperature data. Checking the temperature sensing lines is important because accurate temperature data is crucial for proper fan speed control.

I would cut the fan connector wire at the middle point instead of at the neck... It would give me freedom to connect wires properly & less messy..

I have a heat problem with vga ati, it causes a bsod with the words "atikmpag.sys" I added a thin copper plate in the gap between the VGA chipset and the heatsink then the temperature returned to normal and the laptop was normal But after a few months passed, the bsod "atikmpag.sys" came again. even this time the laptop screen won't turn on Have you experienced it?

He speaks for the DC motor driver which is an ic, typically H bridge, you can Google what is h Bridge and of course a logic that controls the speed and direction, the direction also can be controlled through the H bridge, but the speed is PWM controlled

I believe that fan can be controlled by bios settings or windows softwares. The wire can be a data line and it was turned off from software.

Lots of guys complaining about repair methods but it’s called economies of scale , what do you think was charged for this job ? When you have that , you’ll get your answer to the repair aka dodgy , yes they are better ways but they take time which the customer won’t pay for given the demographic and the age / condition of hardware.
