I made some disco lights in the 1980`s with Triac`s. I used a tape recorder to send a voltage to a decade counter and it controlled 10 triac`s using the output speaker connections as a output signal. You could put the tape recorder in record mode to pick up sound.

Hey bro. The value of 3302 resistors is equal to 33K ohms. This numbering is for 1% resistors. I guess you have written the value of these resistors in the schematic as 3.3K ohms. I love your videos and I always make your projects. I also like the tone of your voice and your beautiful English accent😊

Another great video. Can I suggest that at this point 9:50, you should have put it into a plastic box as a demonstration of safety. Turning the pot and holding the circuit still, isn't safe. Someone may decide to give it a go and then forget that the normally low voltage protoboard that they're using is now at mains voltage. I experienced 240V when I was nine and I went flying across my bedroom.

These are excellent for resistance heating devices but for ac motors especially ac induction motors it can be hard on your coils and the bearings. If you have sufficient cooling you really wont need to worry about that and it's not always the case but something that can happen. From what ive read about peoples experience it depends on the manufacturer but it's like 20% of people seemed to either fry their coils or like in my case keep having bearings go out. Could also be how i used it or others rewired the device wrong. Just figured id throw it out the to take into consideration. For what its worth this circuit absolutely does control ac induction motors.

How to screw up the solar power consumption / balcony power plant to really save a lot of electricity costs: kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3SVoJ-YeKebnpI. Avoiding grid purchases will shorten the payback period. With Dimmer + Solar PV, self-sufficiency can now increase to almost 95%. That's how easy it is to suppress expensive grid purchases. The electricity bill stops just like the electricity meter. kzbin.info/www/bejne/emq2pGOIqtaNfZI Kettle: Without a dimmer, the 2500W - 600W PV system needs = 1900W, which you have to pay more for. If I turn the kettle down to 600W with a dimmer, then every PV system that is too weak can now supply each consumer independently and independently, because the 2500W kettle becomes a 600W kettle thanks to the dimmer. No magic, just physics. The prerequisite is that you have at least one small solar PV balcony power plant. You don't need an expensive battery. kzbin.info/www/bejne/l6unm6SQpd9qbbc The 2000W e-heater becomes a 500W e-heater via dimmer, which can run 12 hours a day free of charge via PV with me. The 4000W analog oven is also tamed. It is not the solar systems that have to grow, but the average consumption of the integrated device heaters simply has to drop by 75%. With the dimmer / voltage controller it has become so easy. I have already switched my entire household (2020) to 4x dimmers. Please have a look at my channel. 🌞 ........... Increase mini PV solar self-sufficiency (winter and camping): You can continuously regulate a boiler and other power-hungry consumers with the "5000W dimmer". Ebay €7. I run 4 dimmers in parallel on an 850W inverter. Kettle 2.2KW at 150W runs 12 hours a day, so the water is always hot. The room is also nicely heated. 2.5KW washing machine runs in parallel with dimmed to 400...600W and always reaches its 60°C, and also its 1400rpm... It doesn't matter to the washing machine whether it changes the washing temperature to 5min@2500W or 100% can be achieved free of charge via existing PV power in 20min@600W. The wash cycle lasts the same time dimmed and non-dimmed, 3Sth 10min. Lots of videos on my channel. The inverter stays cool and quiet and the MOSFETs + (battery packs) stay intact because extreme current peaks no longer reach the inverter. Now every Mini PV Inverter is enough to operate large devices. So, with the dimmer, all internal heaters/devices can be converted into base load devices that stay almost permanently ON, drawing very little current directly from the PV. With a wattmeter / energy cost meter you can then measure this perfectly in order to set the dimmer optimally. ........ So if I want to boil my water, I always have to use the same amount of energy for one liter. Christian's method relies on a longer period of time with less power in order to be able to use the power provided by the PV as efficiently as possible - so consumption peaks are intercepted. In the end, the energy consumption should even be (slightly) higher due to the interposition of the dimmer, but it doesn't matter, since more efficient coverage by the PV system and therefore better use of the self-generated energy .......... @HerrNilssonOmJagFarBe
@HerrNilssonOmJagFarBe 2 жыл бұрын
In the simple circuit, when the load is off (the DIAC threshold isn't reached), the voltage over C1 lags the input voltage. When the input voltage rises above 0V after the zero crossing, the cap still holds a negative charge from the previous cycle. So it starts up from a negative voltage. If the potentiometer is moved in th edirection to turn on the load, suddenly the TRIAC will fire. This will discharge C1, so at the next zero crossing, the voltage over C1 starts at 0 for the next cycle. This means that it reaches the DIAC threshold quicker in the next cycle. The result is a hysteresis effect, where power snaps up abruptly from zero, and you have to dial down the pot again to maintain a lower power level. The bridge rectifier discharges the capacitor (C3 in this case) when the input voltage is close to the zero crossing, even if the TRIAC doesn't fire, making sure that the cap starts charging from 0V in all cycles, both where the TRIAC conducts and when it doesn't. It gets rid of the "snap" effect and makes operation at low power levels much smoother.

Very informative video. Is this triac dimmer reduces voltage? And if so will it be effective to reduce 220V to 110v for a solidstate guitar amp. Thanks
@baladar1353
@baladar1353 Ай бұрын
No. For your purpose, a transformer with 230V input and 115V output will fit. This circuit is NOT for halving the amplitude of a sinewave. It deforms the sinusoidal waveforms like pulse width modulation does with DC voltage, but synchronised by the beginning of every half-wave. If you would try to use it as a voltage reducer for your guitar amplifier, it could render your amplifier useless, even blown up. Try to get or build a transformer that transforms 230V AC voltage to 115V AC, it will fit your needs and there will be no annoying (sometimes deadly) disturbances.

I have a small cheap portable induction cooktop (lots of mosfets inside). It works mostly fine but at low power it does not only dimm anymore, but powers on and off the induction coil as well. Not a problem in itself except when using it in a solar pv system where the inverter will constantly "lose" solar power trying to match the rapidly changing cooktop, making other stable appliances use grid as well even with plenty of sun. Is dimming it with a triac a bad idea?

Trailing edge dimmers are supposed to work with dimmable LED lamps, so hopefully the one that I bought will work with my pool light LED driver that is rated at 120v AC . Here in Mexico the standard is 127v but it commonly varies up to 135v and I want to use the dimmer to lower the voltage by about 10%. What do you think about this?

Because you need to fire the activation pulse of the TRIAC always at the same time. And since AC is oscilalting, in order to syncrhonise the pulse, we detect the zero corss and then we apply the pulse after the same amount of time, every time.

Very nice and informative video. But in practical terms, this circuit would be a really bad choice. TRIACs and full bridge rectifiers are well-known to induce a high percentage of harmonic distortion due to the capacitors only requiring current from the source for a limited time, making the current drawn a distorted sine wave. Therefore, the power factor will be very small and it will definitely not be in compliance with IEC 61000 3-2 or 3-4.
