awesome easy project! fyi i recently learned how to clean acrylic...first, use some brush cleaner (artists use this for their paint brushes) on a shop towel or paper towel to wipe the whole surface. Then I used Meyer's multipurpose spray to wipe the whole piece, then finally, sprayed water and wiped dry with a paper towel. Got the acrylic so clean!

I am curious why you recommend using 4mm instead of 2mm for the thickness of the acrylic? Is the main difference just the rigidity of the sign or are there other benefits?

If you etched on both sides of the glass, for example a wider/taller version of your letters, would it give the impression of a shadow, from one side? Or would it all appear to be the same brightness?

Just bought a $205 CNC machine for this kinda stuff and cutting acrylic. My old 40w laser did not like clear acrylic.

@@mikecarter8880 40W laser is used for only wood.
@mikecarter88804 жыл бұрын
@@imperialrecker7111 Its used for much more. I did leather, I did metal engraving with a coating. I did acrylic, it just didnt like clear.
@imperialrecker71114 жыл бұрын
@@mikecarter8880 well it works for leather. Metal with paint is also ok, but no one wants a paint engraving on metal. acrylic with laser would melt or reflect most of the laser making it useless. Tip: For CNC don't put the spinning CNC bit too high or move it too slow. This would result in melting. Instead do multiple runs on the acrylic.
@mikecarter88804 жыл бұрын
@@imperialrecker7111 What laser you running? Cermark works just fine for what I need. The small amount of acrylic stuff looks fine. But saying a 40w laser is only for wood is wrong.

If I etch or sandblast one side of 1/2" thick cast acrylic and leave my logo clear (without etching or sandblasting) will the whole panel light up with exception of my logo? In other words, I want to do exactly opposite of what you are showing (the panel clear and the logo etched). Thank you for any insight you can give me in this.

ALWAYS WEAR A PROTECTIVE MASK AND GOGGLES WHEN YOU DO ENGRAVING BECAUSE ALL THESE TINY PARTICLES THAT ARE REMOVED TRAVEL AT A HIGH SPEED...!!! you did a great job...well done...i was sceptical about just putting the design underneath and engrave with the dremel on the plexi from the top...but i did the same thing and it turned out descent enough....there are 3 methods 1.create a stencil with the design....use a transparent vinyl printable a4 sheet and cut the design....USING A HOT KNIFE IS UNBELIEVABLY EASIER THAN THE CLASSIC X-ACTO KNIFE...this method is perfect because the edges of the stencil really guide your dremel...but in a complex design it is time consuming process to create the stenciL 2.use a carbonpaper or transfer paper to transfer the design on the acrylic....use a sharp pencil or else the lines on the plexi will be thick...major advantage on this method is that you just erase the design with your dremel leaving the ''frosty'' design at the end.. 3.use your method...just put the design underneath and start engraving...this is great because there is no preparation..and for another reason.....if you have the design on black and the background on white....every line you pass with the dremel it just erases the black line underneath..the frosty look erases the black design ..so its not only that it really guides you but you can clearly see the progress you have done...an alternative method is the white on black background....like this...kzbin.info/www/bejne/amiYnHeFhNaGpdE its not so good i believe but the black edges really help you stay ''in'' the design pattern...!!! use carbide and diamond bits even with softer materials...on metal use the HIGHEST SPEED...TO THE 30K RPM RANGE..ON SOFTER MATERIALS LIKE PLEXI PLASTIC I THINK IS MORE SUITABLE AROUND THE MIDDLE SETTING BECAUSE YOU CAN EASILY BURN THE MATERIAL.... USE A DIAMOND PENCIL BIT TO DRAW THE LINES AND THEN A BALL POINT BIT TO FILL THE AREA....USE A METAL RULER IF YOU HAVE LETTERS NUMBERS OR A LOT OF STRAIGHT LINES..ALTERNATIVELY USE A FLAT WIDE SCREWDRIVE TO GUIDE THE DREMEL BECAUSE THE RULER IN A SMALL DESIGN IS CUMBERSOME AND DIFFICULT TO CONTROL!!!! if the edges of the acrylic are not perfect especially at the side which gonna sit on the led strip....use wet sanding ..start from 400-600 then 1000 1500 2000 and then a fine buffing compound and it should be perfect...or flame polishing but i think you could easilly make a mistake so i believe the good old method is totally adequate...!!!CHEE(R)S!!! P.S.ANO ONE LAST TIP...WHEN YOU DO ENGRAVING IN METAL OR OTHER SURFACES...THAT ARE NOT TRANSPARENT SO YOU CAN SEE THE DESIGN LIKE PLEXI...IF THE STENCIL IS COMPLEX OR TOO SMALL OR TOO BORING TO DO 1.USE A LASER PRINTER TO COPY THE DESIGN 2.TRANSFER THE DESIGN TO THE VERY THIN TRANSPARENT FILM THAT WE USED TO COVER THE BOOKS BY USING THE ACETONE METHOD ..THERE ARE MANY VIDEOS ABOUT IT...USE MUCH LESS ACETONE THAN YOU PROBABLY THINK.! 3.STICK IT TO THE SURFACE AND DO THE ENGRAVING.. ALL RIGHT SOMEONE MAY ASK ...WHY DONT YOU PUT 2SIDED TAPE TO STICK THE A4 PAPER TO THE DESIGN...THE REASON IS THAT THE PAPER IS WAY MORE THICK THAN THE FILM AND THE DIAMOND CARBIDE BIT CLOGS UP EASILY...AND SOMETIMES THE PAPER LEADS YOUR HAND AND YOU COULD EASILY MAKE A MISTAKE..!! I KNOW THAT THERE ARE A4 TRANSPARENT STICKERS FOR COPIES...BUT THEY ARE MORE EXPENSIVE ...DONT KNOW THEIR THICKNESS...AND ALSO IF YOU CUT ONE OF THEM YOU CANT PUT IT BACK TO THE PRINTER TO MAKE ANOTHER DESIGN...EVEN THE A4 TRANSPARENT STENCIL SHEETS ARE VERY THICK TO PENENTRATE WITH THE BITS...!! SO MY SOLUTION IS BEST...!ITS UNBELIEVABLY EASY TO DO THE ENGRAVING OVER THIS VERY THIN FILM..AND THE LABORIOUS STENCIL PROCEDURE IS AVOIDED...!ON METAL USE ONLY DIAMOND PENCIL BIT FOR THE LINES AND CARBIDE OR DIAMOND BALL BIT TO FILL THE AREA...!! I CAME UP AND WROTE THE METHOD WITH ACETONE AND VERY THIN BOOK COVER FILM...CAUSE IN SOME SURFACES ..IF THEY ARE TOO GLOSSY OR HAVE CURVES IT IS VERY DIFFICULT...NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE.. TO DO THE ACETONE TRANSFER AT ONCE!ACETONE CAN ALSO HARM SOME OF THESE SURFACES...!!BUT THE BEST THING IS THAT THIS THIN FILM PROTECT THE REST OF THE AREA YOU DONT WANT TO ENGRAVE!IF THE DESIGN IS REALLY SMALL YOU CAN USE TRANSPARENT TAPE !!
