Elegant Minimalism: Game of Thrones, Making a camper composting toilet

After using a luggable loo for awhile, I decided to make a sort of composting toilet. This one though is different, pretty (as far as toilets go). It has internal sealed urine collection with outside draining, An odor check valve, and as self cleaning system. A labor of love and headaches as I was designing on the fly from plans on the inside of my head. Let me know what you think...

Guessing a lot of viewers want to make something like this. Love the ping pong ball valve and the air vent to make it work better. The washer motor flush is great as well. I will probably lay up one layer of fiberglass on something it will release from and curve it around instead of wood, then add more layers to lock in the shape. Won't be as beautiful, but easier if you work with fiberglass. Thin plastic backsplash or formica would also curve without cutting all the kerfs.

That's so nice to hear. A couple of big trips under our belts so far with it. Works great. The fan sips battery power so I leave it on all the time, even when rolling. Absolutely zero odor even after several days. The wife with the small bladder is so pleased.

I have since added a valve that I can reach easily with just my hand and other people have to lift a container out inside the camper and carry it outdoors and dump it. Another advantage is that one were Boondocking. I can just open the valve and let it drain when we leave, when your Boondocking usually in the middle of nowhere anyway. Thanks for commenting.

Mine came in at around $200. But I added a lot of stuff. Could be done for $150. A composting toilet bought commercially start at $300 and go up to about $1200. Most are in the $500 range. This isn't a portapotty what uses chemicals and you have to dump it.

I built one very similar about 18 months ago. I shortened it by about 2" to gut under a cabinet door. Wish I had gone a bit shorter yet and put a 3 gallon bucket in instead. It ends up about 8" taller than a normal toilet in that configuration.

YES! I'll be building a little set of foot rests for the wife in the spring. Now she looks like a kid on it with her feet 3" off the floor.

Consider not gluing the top cap of the urine collector to facilitate cleaning. Over time salts from the urine may build up inside the urine reservoir and clog the drain.

This is absolutely the best idea and build for an off grid toilet. I will use this pattern for my 12' x 24' Cram-A-Lot Inn located in Alpine, Arkansas. Thank you soo much for sharing your idea.

So far, we’re halfway through our trip out on the other end of the Earth in Newfoundland Canada. Mostly we’ve been Boondocking and the commode has been stellar.
